So here's why I think people like this show.
I know a couple people who do. I've also watched all of it much to my own regret.

Firstly, it's by a very famous and western group of internet film makers that clearly (at least used to) had a very western audience. Their company's game division focuses on Xbox and the most popular thing they made that got them off the ground was using Halo, an Xbox exclusive.
This means a majority of the fans not only started watching when they were younger, giving them a sense of loyalty to the company and it's work, but also had a bunch of loyal Xbox fans who began to share that console loyalty with that company.

You can gather from all that, that the majority of their fanbase has never bothered to actually try a real Japanese cartoon in their life.
Next thing they know, here comes this western company who made shows they love and/or are loyal to for so long, announcing this colorful action show right after the ending of a season of Red vs Blue (the halo show).
A lot of kids who liked Naruto (like myself) loved it because it was their first experience to the Japanese style of writing, animation, and all the cliches with it. Meaning they dont really know whats bad and good quality for it yeah. It's so different they're objectivity is blocked.
Combine that with the Japanese loving the girls character designs over there and bam, a huge undeserving success.

Me personally, I think the show's only gotten worse since Monty's (the shows creator) passing. He was the guy RT hired because of fight animation skills alone (see haloid and dead fantasy for his earliest work). His "Red" and "White" trailers for the show were genuinely incredible. Yet the second they had that hack writer Miles over there start pooping out a cliche filled script to space between the cool fights and actually hired in house voice "actors", it all went down hill.
Now the main fight guy is dead and EVERYTHING about it sucks or is mediocre at best.

Reviving characters who died isn't inherently a bad thing, it's just that most of the time it isn't done well and comes off as an asspull. Roman or especially Pyrrha coming back would definitely be an example of that.
On the other hand, Penny being brought back both makes sense (because she's a robot) and wouldn't set a precedent for reviving other dead characters (because they're probably not robots). It'd be an example of an acceptable character revival.

RT isn't at all a large professional animation studio, yet it's honestly far better than most shows I've seen that has a far larger budget and more people working on it.
