I didn't, because I haven't watched a single Spongebob episode before Coconut Fred's time.

But when I finally did, I couldn't tell why is one supposed to be significantly worse than the other, when both are just as bad.

In retrospect I didn't really mind the show that much, but what you describe is exactly why the show is bad and gets grating after a couple episodes of the same shit over and over. You can't really relate to Fred or even reason with him.

I also consider it weird that people compare it to Spongebob when Spongebob had leagues better writing and humor. On a surface level I guess you can stretch it a little.
