This is my first introduction to G.I. Joe, It was bad experience. Is the actual source material worth watching, or is it a thing of the past.
It's worth watching if you like things of the past.
Seriously, if you like 80s shows you'll like it and if you don't, you won't. There are a lot of people who seem to just be unable to watch anything with wackiness or dated animation....if you're one of those people you won't like it, if you watch other 80s shows though yes I think it is quite good

that Baroness ass though
I actually really enjoyed that movie. It was fun.
the only thing i actually remember from this movie was the part when London exploded

That was Paris.
I loved that movie
Sequel was just ok tho
I've never watched any Joe cartoons or any comics

The first two straight to video mini series were more grown up taking a lot of the ideas of the comic and producing an animated adventure in the same tone. Then the series got a TV order and it becomes very cheesy the rest of the series. After Sunbow animation leaves and another takes over, writing and animation quality dive even harder.
I would suggest watching the first two 5-part mini series and then reading Hama's original '80s comic which is much more serious rather than goofy.

The 80's GI Joe cartoon was probably the best of those Transformers-style toy commercial cartoons. It's cheesy fun.
The only other good GI Joe cartoon was Renegades, which deserved better.

"The actual source material" is the comic. Everything else is based on that.

Atlest give the sequel a shot.
It got some fucking awesome ninja shit in it!
Just like the first one...

Yeah that was bad, the second movie was better but meh it's not the best Joe stuff
Read
>GI Joe: ARAH
Starts with Marvel and continues with IDW
>GI Joe: Cobra, Cobra Files and all the IDW Cobra related stuff
The upcoming IDW Joe stuff with Aubrey Sitterson looks like it will be fun too so get that when it comes out.
All the Joe and Transformers crossovers were fun although I would save Transformers vs GI Joe for after you're a bit acquainted with one or both franchises.
Watch
>GI Joe: Renegades
Here are all the episodes, have fun

Although I warn you it will end on a Cliffhanger and ther eis no season 2, but just watch it.
You can also watch the 80's cartoon although it's just a bunch of zany 80's camp stuff if you like G1 Transformers.
GI Joe: Resolute is kind of edgy (Warren Ellis who knew nothing about GI Joe wrote it) and I didn't like it that much but they had one of the best Cobra Commanders.
