no it didn't do anything new (except for some fantastic atmospheric spaceship combat, and ... well, a little of the tone and dialogue were definitely a product of their time), but more importantly it didn't do anything WRONG. It respected and addressed the old shit, got it finished, and now they can do something new. and the cases where it recycled something directly, it more or less acknowledged the reasons for doing so
