To be honest, social commentary can have a place in a superhero story. Golden Age Superman was full of social commentary, most notably when Supes beats the shit out of an abusive husband (and when Superman later advocates not entering WWII/beating the shit out of Nazi's after the US entered WWII).

This just sounds like another director found out that superhero movies aren't really there to let director's make their own movies, they're there to produce a blockbuster. That's all either WB or Marvel wants.
