Are cartoons the only medium where making something more realistic and complex in anyway will make you less money? no problem with that, It just appears like that.

No. Good microbudget films turn far more of a profit than major budget films and are way less of a risk

Technically there's video games too.
AAA games with "realistic" graphics are inherently unsustainable due to how much money they put in with very little getting adequate gain.

There's only a few series that profit from extreme realism.
>>
>>87387875
Isn't that mostly from reusing assets though?
>>
>>87387875
yeah, videogames are currently going through the same thing cartoons did during the late 90s

they are putting more and more money into their production, with less and less profit
Unless they revert to a more simplistic style, a crash is on the way
>>
>>87387974
Kind of yeah, if they were to make new ones every few games there would have been a crash of some kind by now
>>
consider why most come to cartoons
it's not verisimilitude
if you want something that looks like live action, there's live action
there's a reason we use the word "cartoony"
>>
>>87388647
then why does /co/ demand all cartoons to look photo-realistic?
>>
>>87389407
no, no one here or anywhere on the internet asks for photo realistic cartoons, that's like /v/ asking all video games be open world. What people want is a cartoon where the character design is consistent.

Meanwhile in reality videogame keep making more and more money with the global value of the videogame market in 2016 estimated to be 75 billion US dollars with yearly growth of 5-6%.

https://www.statista.com/statistics/246888/value-of-the-global-video-game-market/

But you know, fuck actual numbers, the end is coming vidya will crash it's another '83 buy gold etc.

Almost every micro budget adult animated film I have seen has bombed hard. Not even making half of the budget used to make it.
>>87387875
AAA games are blockbuster tier. Mindless popcorn entertainment for everyone with a few rare masterpieces. But animations indie scene isn't that healthy while video games have an indie scene that continuously puts out quality and quantity.
>>
>>87389522
Video games only crashed in the US. In Japan and Europe they were expanding and evolving
>>
>>87389407
that's just me I have a rotoscope fetish thanks to Cool World. And I don't even want it for all cartoons, just more rotoscope porn
>>

>Unless they revert to a more simplistic style, a crash is on the way

Nigga, no. If anything, you'll get large companies scaling back on AAA development budgets.

A crash can't happen because everyone can see what a game is like before buying it. It's not like back then where people stopped buying games because they had no way to tell what was actually good from all the shit coming out.
>>
>>87389597
And just like the occasional blockbuster failure in any other entertainment medium the occasional call of duty failing is not going to put a single dent into the industry.

Or is the movie industry going to crash now that BFG is bombing like it was 1945 in dresden?
>>
>>87389672
Actually almost every blockbuster this year has underperformed even with China bux
>>
the hobbit films actually had to stop using 40fps because it was too realistic, the extra frames meant that the "blur" we associate with speed was not there, causing things to look too slow

same with cartoons, looking more realistic adds to the cost, while decreasing the "animated" aspect since more detail equals less frames. you could have both, but at that point you will have invested so much you would be less a cartoon and more a movie, and would need a massive effort to make back your cost
>>
>>87389667
but imagine if the market gets flooded by too many games of approximately the same quality, and as a result, none of them will be able to make their money back?
>>
>>87389672
I sure hope so
>>

most 360 and PS3 big budget shooters/sports games look like shit today, not only the graphics aged but the art direction is poor or non existent, now compare that to The Legend of Zelda Wind Waker which is a 2002 game that stills look awesome to this day, pic related is not even the HD port for Wii U
>>
>>87387875

At this point I'd prefer games with less realistic but more stylistic graphics and more time/money put into the mechanics and gameplay and whatnot.

If only because I've got 50 gig games on my system, shit.
