This is what we call peer pressure and morbid curiosity.

So that's the actual plot of the story.

The male role in a relationship is the active one, the one who initiates, who pursues, the assertive one, etc. The problem with Arkos is that Pyrrha, the one who wanted it the most would either make no attempt to make it happen or would actually drive him away; meanwhile Jaune, the one who could make it happen, the one who can confidently pursue girls he's interesting in, had little to no interest in making Arkos happen. By making Jaune the "girl" in the relationship, it's easier for the artist/writer to make Arkos happen

In a creative work, it is vastly important for the audience to be able to empathize with the cast in some way, at least if you want to have any kind of plot line.
A common side effect of this is that if someone can strongly identify with a character, they may begin to self-insert with that character.
This is part of the reason why people enjoy harem shot; The MC is usually bland and has no personality beyond being an awkward nerd who's bad at stuff, but at the same time, there is a lot of wish fulfillment due to things like having a myriad of women tripping over themselves for the MC's dick.
In short, self-inserting is really only bad if the writing is bad, otherwise, it doesn't matter in any meaningful way beyond identifying with a character.

In defense Jaune I will give Miles credit to this:
He at least addressed why Pyrrha likes him. The fandom assumes Jaune is the harem like character when in actuality Pyrrha is the only girl who is in love with him. And the only girl Jaune showed interest in was Weiss, it was a garbage love triangle arc yes but if Jaune really was this "harem" character Jaune haters say he is, they're essentially wrong.

Shane in his letter and to an extent miles commented on that. Monty had a habit of inserting scenes into the show without the input of the other directors of the show, or simply reworking them himself because he felt it fit better.

Things like Penny's reveal with the bullheads and Raven's reveal were his baby.

Raven was supposed to be in the early episodes of Volume 3 attacking team JNPR (for some odd reason that not even shane explained) and he inserted that dream sequence despite the objections from other folks on the team due to how it would fit in the next volume.
