We're back - sorry for the delay!
"Empowered" is Adam Warren's ongoing graphic novel series following the adventures of the titular (insecure) superheroine. Expect laughs, satire of the superhero genre, and drama out of left field.
Oh, and a lot of bondage. (Well, less, now that we're moving past the early volumes.)
Feel free to comment and respond as much as you like - discussion is what makes a storytime fun, after all. If it goes for a while without anyone other than me posting, a bump would obviously be appreciated.
Last time, Emp was nominated for an award at the coveted Capeys - little did she know, it was really a mean-spirited joke at her expense. However, when an attack was launched by stalwart teammate dWARF, who turned out to be ex-hero-with-a-grudge Fleshmaster, Emp turned things around and saved the ass of everyone at the awards ceremony. How much credit she'll receive for this is still unclear, but we can hope, right?
Oh, and happy Hallowe'en I guess. Maybe this will be aSistahSpooky Storytime!
Let's kick Volume 5 off!
>>87367600
Man, this board theme is pretty spooky, in a kind of 'just horrible to look at' way.

>>87367693
Ending a sentence with a preposition is fine Emp - don't let the hardcore grammar prescriptivists get you down. English ain't Latin.

What she doesn't know could fill a book. Good thing we're about to read it.

>>87370843
Yeah that's probably not a line to cross with her, ever.
>>87368682
He and dWARF were tight and the circumstances of the Capeys incident were pretty nuts. It wouldn't take much to make a guy think that Empowered and/or Manny set the whole thing up to chlorinate the gene pool while getting the poor girl recognition.
Only reason we aren't taking his side is we have the benefit of seeing the entire story taking place. And knowing Empy's character better, but his judgement of her and dWARF's character is kind of on him.
>>87370873
No, no reason to show him really. IIRC he's been locked up in super-solitary-for-batshit-assholes since shortly after he went kookoo.
>>87370901
Ya blew it, Spookums.
>>87370921
Spookybutt's such a good character. She's an awful, broken person that deserves all the hell that's coming to her but Adam kept her human enough to be human and somewhat sympathetic.
>>87370921
Guess Maidman is pretty new on the block himself.
>>87370055
hnnnngh
>>87371023
Or he might have been independent until recognized by the Homeys
>>87371023
dWARF!, tied-up Havoc, and what is presumably Kid Anglerfish's dad? Gonna be a weird chapter for sure.
>>87371083
There's probably a reason for that, Emp.
>>87371023
>quite possibly the most competent hero in the series is a campy male crossdresser with DID.

>>87372258

So Spooky redirects calories from her own bodies to others, due to spell fuckery, right? And shes canonically a binge eater. So why the hell is EMP not a giant land whale by now? For that matter, why is the whole super homies team not a bunch of lardos?

>also how long has spooky been a hero, like she reverted back to an underage nerd when she was depowered
I believe that Spooky was thirteen when she sold her soul, and instantly gained the body of a twenty-one year old goddess.
Her deal confers 'immutable hotness', meaning that she will not change from appearance in any way until she dies, of old age or incident.
As we have seen, this is no way protects her from harm, as the regrettable 'ARR' incident pointed out.
The cosmic-level magical power level is what she uses to keep her luscious self safe.
>>87372550
A cautionary tale, indeed.

At the same time, she's fucking hard with her clan's Ninja Princess, who is a savage-murdering psychopath on her good days, and a vicious drunken psychopath on her bad days.
So, Oyuki is stretching out with some mild acrobatics, in case she has to try and keep Ninjette from murdering her horribly.
Note that Oyuki is so crazy, she's still fucking with the stick of dynamite, though.

>>87376588

>>87376588
Emp's supersuit seems to have a power build that functions on inverses. When she's not in any real danger, it shreds easily and rips away. When shit ACTUALLY goes down, its powerlevel seems to approach cosmic tier.
My theory is it "hoards" power from her various emotional responses, sacrificing itself against bullets and stuff to protect her. Then when she's actually in real danger (and can't save herself) it becomes extremely dangerous.
Basically it's "don't read a book (or boobs) by its cover: the powersuit."

IMO he's not setting them ALL up for horrible death. A few might meet Sad Ends, but overall this is a comedy, not a slaughterhouse. Things will end on a positive note, with our heroes having changed during the journey.R-right?...
>>87377493
I don't either. I'm just pointing out that it has less to do with the circumstance and everything to if anyone in charge wants to fuck you over.
If it's enough for some fucktard to get you in jail for a few decades then you should probably reconsider doing it.
Anglerkid's use of power is far more dubious so if any prosecution went after him then I'm fairly certain he could be convicted. All it takes is some angler headed baby to pop out of a married woman for false allegations get filed to protect her marriage.
TLDR it counts if you measure it using meaningful consequences as a standard.
>>87378247
If that helps you sleep at night.I can't feel anything about Mindfuck as a character nor her death. She literally only existed to create drama over her own death. I suspect I'll feel more and more like this as the volumes get posted.

Just have a drink, Anon.
>>87378322
I think the implication is that she'll be back somehow. Warren is, despite basically drawing porn, an alarmingly competent writer. He'll likely place her back within the narrative over time, especially because we learn so little about her in her brief appearance.
I do agree some of the drama is forced though. It seems a liiiittle too convenient that Spooky is a lesbian who also hates blondes but also dates a blonde but... yeah. Shit's convoluted and sometimes feels a little contrived.
But I still love these characters dammit. Particularly Ninjette. Dat beer capacity.
>>87376670
>Emp's supersuit seems to have a power build that functions on inverses. When she's not in any real danger, it shreds easily and rips away. When shit ACTUALLY goes down, its powerlevel seems to approach cosmic tier.
Emp's supersuit is just playing a game where it "pretends" to lose power when it's torn, without actually losing a shred of it. It's been shown to be incredibly protective when down to almost nothing.
My personal theory is that it isn't providing Superpowers at all; it is in fact regulating her immense powers and rationing them out, so she doesn't grow up to be a super-asshole.
My guess is that her Mom is one of the super-dimensional "cloud beings" that sent her the suit to begin with.
>>87377912
Basically the logic is that Thugboy have mental issues regarding the death of his friends and Willy Pete. And Mindfuck said that Willy Pete is a kludge of fragmented minds.
So with a bit of reaching and paranoia one can reach the conclusion that Willy Pete IS Thugboy`s mental issues.
How likely this is is another thing entirely.
>>87378381
It's just an attitude i've developed over time. Shock deaths are so common in any media that I've grown desensitized to character death completely. I can be made to cry, but it takes legitimately top shelf writing to budge me. The kind of dedication to writing a character long term and developing real relations and story dependency on. Most writers won't do that for an entity they'll get rid of.
The best example I can think of, and it made me cry like a bitch to boot, is the loss ofthe Going Merry
Though maybe that's because I'm (sort of) a writer myself. You develop a sense for when lines are being drawn too hastily around a certain character. It reeks of desire to cash in during the very near future.
>>87378518
>My guess is that her Mom is one of the super-dimensional "cloud beings" that sent her the suit to begin with.
Warren has said, or maybe it's in the comic, that her mother's unattainable beauty is part of the reason she has body image issues.
>>87374621
Considering the later volumes I would guess thathe's a character witness for Emp since he's one of the only people that get along with her.and the council really wants to scapegoat the shit out of her.
>>87378577
Thugboy has waking dreams of Willy at this point, where Willy is discussing what he plans to do in the future.
We know Willy is an artificial mind-construct made from more than one consciousness possibly, and hence hard to psi.
We know that Thugboy is from a special Ops unit of the military, before going rogue against Metas and then a minion.
We know that he has a violent hatred of Metas, and that Willy violently kills Metas.
Willy Pete is named after an obscure slang term for a military weapon.
My theory is that Thugboy's unit was experimented upon to create a super-assault weapon, a living being of W.P.
Sorta like The Forever People and Infinity-Man, they'd summon up this diabolical Genie in tough spots.
Being some creature of Id it probably did some horrific shit (Willy is pretty much horrible shit incarnate).
With the rest of his unit dead, I'd say Thugboy is alive because Willy isn't sure he can live without at least one of them.
That's my crack theory.
>>87378716
Is this a Ben 10 situation only his bitchy cousin isn't a shitty character?
>>87378689
>sort of
Get off that fence Anon, aren't you or are you?
I find myself occasionally moved by character death, but very rarely in superhero comics. I'm less impressed by Warren killing his heroes than in the way he beats the shit out of the living ones' emotions. There's just a lot of depth that's being explored in how damaged these people can actually get. Which I masochistically enjoy reading.
>>87378761
I'll buy that
>>87374997
As hot/hotter as/than the sun by itself isn't as impressive as one would think due to how often that term is used to describe the heat generated by something in RL.(Eg lightning strikes,Atom bombs, shrimp punches) The real impressive bit is that he's sustaining that shit and continuing to pump it out.
>>87378860
Thugboys entire story about being a Minion of Willy Pete at some point is certainly complete bullshit.
Not only would Willy have zero need of Thugs, he's homocidal to the point of killing villains who try to work with him immediately.
Either Thugboy is lying outright, he's losing it and his memories aren't reliable, or Willy is "editing" them to provide him with a backstory he can live with.
There's just no way I can buy Willy hiring Thugboy and his fellows for anything, and then "killing them in retaliation for fucking him over".
>>87379068
Also depends on which part of the sun. Corona? Not so impressive. Core? Way impressive.
And since Mindfuck was talking about six figure heat levels, Willy Pete`s blast is probably closer to core temperatures.
>>87378803
>Get off that fence Anon, aren't you or are you?
Call it collaborative storytelling. I've done it since middle school online. Role playing where how the story line goes is determined by collaboration and storytelling skill rather than dice. Originally I got in to it as an internet sub community started in the late 90's that is long since vanished, but over the years we got really good at what we did. To the point singular scenes could take hours of detailed description writing and plotting. That it got so time intensive is one of the reason the community fell apart, sadly. Everyone grew up and had to get real lives. We might have also gotten a bit snooty about writing quality to the point it made it hard to get new blood.
We even did fights among each other. How do you solve fights without dice to settle disputes? It's hard to explain, but you had to narratively maneuver the situation in such a way that the other party can't deny they are fucked. All for fun, of course, so there was nothing at stake to make people want to cheat. Anyone starting a fight with someone who didn't want it could be safely ignored.
I've tried to replace it with tabletop RPGs, but it feels like a depressing pale shadow of what I was used to. Now I read comics and manga. All in all I have narrative sense like spidey has spidey sense. Stories are constructed in a certain way, and nothing is a truly senseless detail. Even the red herrings have a point for existing.
>>87379167
the corona is still pretty fuckin hot
>>87376588
It tends to work inversely proportional to the danger she's in. If the self confidence theory is correct then situations like this where she's too terrified/angry out of her ing mind to be self conscious makes her insanely powerful. That's why all of the S-list villains know she's not to be trifled with.

How is it living a life where you think you are having fun but are never completely sure you know what fun is?
>>87379369
Get over yourself, you don't have Super-story-analysis powers and you don't have the extraordinary IQ you believe you have.
You're just another jaded, ronery Anon.
>>87379475
It's not a magical power nor IQ. It's just experience. Is that really such a hard concept for you to wrap your head around? Each individual in that community probably wrote several novels worth of material over the years in their own right.
>jaded and ronery
Projecting.
>>87379582
the word you are looking for is "pretentiousness" not experience.
You laughably imagine that you are particularly well-read for these parts.
Your longpost is a seething mass of pretension, autism and jaded garbage.
Please resist the urge to post over two sentences in the future.
>>87377394
>>87377210
Go fuck yourself with a rusty pipe flaming with the fires of Modor.
>>87379724
If you can legitimately explain even one of your points of view in a coherent manner, I will concede. Till then, you're just a nigger.
The only thing I am jaded on is character death. Not stories in particular. Just because I can understand narrative structure doesn't mean I don't enjoy reading stories, and that's all this is. Understanding narrative structure. A thing literally anyone can do if they bothered. A story builds on itself in a certain way, and the act of building also restricts itself to keep building in a certain way. Unless the writer goes retarded that is, but that's usually referred to as jumping the shark.
I'd love to know what you think is pretentious. Should I have downplayed the truth? The community wrote material several hours a night every night for ten years. Give or take a year. That's plain fact. Should I have made some stupid lie and said we only wrote three words a week and so we really didn't get that much done?
Is pretending to be illiterate the bar for not being pretentious now?
>autism
Again, code for hating the fact someone is passionate about something.
>>87379262
>>87380126
it really just sounds like you're a turbo-nerd who got too up his own ass about role-playing
>>87380173
And what image does your mind conjure when role playing is brought up? People breathing over miniatures and paper maps drawn by your friend's dad and people giving one sentence replies to situations like, "I cast magic missile at the darkness!"
You were expected to create and describe everything. Not only a detailed account of the area (if it's one you brought people to) such that it could be easily drawn from said description, but also how your character walked and body language as they talked. There was no GM. The players provided everything in collaboration.
That's just how it was. What do you think I'm doing here? Bragging? Saying, "Oh you just don't know till you've experienced it, you poor pleb?" Shove your paranoia down someone else's throat. We just happened to like doing it that way. We were a small passionate community. We didn't begrudge anyone who didn't like it.
>>87380428
you sure are passionate about defending yourself on an anonymous image board
>>87380631
It's a byproduct of his super-creative analytical mind.
>>87380631
The fact it's anonymous is exactly what gives me (and you) nothing to lose. Thus this conversation. Anonymity doesn't make people not care. It makes them care more about their true beliefs and feelings.
Do you think I'd ever admit to not being a depressed sack of shit like everyone else in real life?
At least the aspies didn't show up until the end of the storytime.
>>87381408
Yeah, it's a real relief you didn't show up to shitpost till just now. What could the OP have done if you showed up earlier?
>>87378518
>My guess is that her Mom is one of the super-dimensional "cloud beings" that sent her the suit to begin with.
Huh.
We've never seen Emp's parents, have we?
Even when Anglerfish was doing his thing....
Maybe....
Maybe Elissa is the omnipotent uber-being?
Holy shit, that kinda makes a lot of sense.
>>87378689
>the loss of the Going Merry
Wow.
Just.... Wow.
>>87381824
You cannot unironically claim the loss of the Going Merry isn't a prime example of dedicated storytelling.

Holy shit, what a faggot.

Post a link then, faggot, I wanna read some of this awesome shit that's made you so fucking great.
Put up or shut up, boychick.
>>87381981
It's disturbing that being capable of basic thought process is considered some amazing feat that no one else can do. What the fuck is this?
>>87381947
It's a ranking meme, of sorts. S ranking shit is above and beyond what is considered amazing. So amazing it ascends beyond A and in to it's own special rank. Most often seen in video games.

>>87382051
You're expressing a non-hivemind opinion, and used personal supposed enlightenment / experience / whatever you want to call it as the explination/justification.
The opinion in question is also conceptually corrosive to enjoyment of these stories, and is therefor rejected like a toxin.
Yer banging on people's AT fields, basically.Am I intellectual enough for this conversation yet?
>>87382051
>What the fuck is this?
It's no fucking link to all this awesome shit you wrote that made you so fucking smart, that's what it is.
LINK, NEWFAG, OR LEARN TO LURK MOAR.
>>87377204
Never expected Empowered to be the cape comic equivalent of Evangelion...
>>87382745
About right.
Personally, I massively enjoy the story. I just don't feel anything about the loss of characters. I think the strength of the story is in the interpersonal drama and Emp's growth. Not the cape killing. Mindfuck particularly wasn't introduced too long ago and got very little storytelling. Until we suddenly got a lot of backstory at once at the same time that Willy Pete is coming up.
For the others that died to Willy Pete this volume, they were just assholes.
>>87382805
Only a newfag thinks it's a good idea to provide 4chan with a way to track someone beyond the bounds of the thread they are currently in, newfag.
>>87379130
It could be that he just hired some thugs for the sake of raping them.
Why hunt your food down when you can get it to come to you?
>>87383440
I remember Thugboy specifically mentioning that they crossed him and he retaliated.
Again, the story doesn't line up.
Willy is also a naked fire monster, he has nothing of value for them to steal in the first place, and their whole schtick was to hench as a cover for robbing Metas.
>>87383515
It was probably an oversight originally, but due to Warren being a stickler for continuity it will almost definitely get brought up in the future.
>>87381905
Yeah, I dunno about "a prime example of dedicated storytelling," but as a death scene it left me completely cold.
>>87383515

I don't even know what to say about this. Just... Wow, dude. I was the anon who asked first and I regret it.I do collaborative fiction too but I don't use it to pretend I'm better or smarter than other people. It's fine to be proud of your work but please don't shit on EMP-anons just because it makes you feel better. We're all just trying to have fun here /co/mrade.
>>87383440
That sounds a lot like Willy Pete desu. It's why he's so damn dangerous--he doesn't give a shit about the Unwritten Rules. He will burn-rape you to death because it's all he exists to do.
>>87381799
It would kind of undermine her as a character to make her a demigod though. I don't think that's what Warren is going for here.
>>87379167
>he's as hot as the core of the sun
That shouldn't be possible. Something isn't adding up here. Willy Pete is definitely a giant flaming rapist red herring, but what could he be hiding? Something even worse? Man, I don't even wanna know.
>>87383724
Feel what you like, but it was good storytelling. If you read the manga that is. The anime version of everything is always shit.Assume I'm talking about the manga here cause I am.
The Going Merry was an important part of the story, and it's 'death' was one that happened long after it became a central facet of the story. All damage received in fights was brought up in panel across the chapters, and damage was shown being repaired on panel. Said repairs were also still shown on panel when that part of the ship was shown. The ship getting touch ups and modifications related to these was also a central part of some chapters and even one arc. At no point was any of it simply shoved under the rug but neither was it shoved in your face. The slow descent in to disrepair is subtle but becomes obvious over time. Most of it is also left up to the reader to notice rather than being overtly stated over and over to hammer the point home.
Then the crew is faced with losing said ship, and each member reacts differently and in line with their character to. Further, it creates prolonged friction in the crew that isn't solved as a problem-of-the-chapter issue. It takes many chapters for the issue to become resolved at all, and continues to have effects on the story even when it's not being specifically mentioned as a problem because of the friction (and limitations of not having a ship) it causes with the crew.
And then the ship gets put to rest, but the character arcs spawned from it's loss still have to be resolved. They do, eventually, but it's not easy.
It's just a ship, but it's also undeniably good storytelling.
>>87384010
>I don't use it to pretend I'm better or smarter than other people.
Nor did I. I was asked about it so I answered. I didn't expect people to go in to an autistic fit because it wasn't a simple no or yes question.
>>87384157

>Cites a sappy Shonen book for 12 yr olds

>>87384283

I'm just laughing at your emotional commitment to "It's another Luffy cries giant bitch tears" chapter.
It's even funnier because you are serious about that shit.

>>87384260
As a massive, longtime fan of One-Piece... yeah, dude needs to shut the fuck up.
>>87384354
I bet you cry over characters that die in the same chapter they get introduced in.
>>87379130
It could've been Willy Pete was a bit less prone to just jamming his junk in any old Eye Socket back then, or needed somebody to hold things without burning them up. Maybe he was looking into reversing his condition and the Witless Minions fucked it up by robbing him blind.
>>87383724
Are you trying to tell me you didn't even tear up a little when the Going Merry apologized for not being able to go with the rest of the Crew? And thanked them for getting this far?
Fuck outta here.
>>87384381
I can empathize with stories relating to terrible human loss,
I do not, however, tear up at maudlin Shonen storytelling.
>>87384448
Have you even read One Piece?
I'd challenge you to dismantle my points I made and counter them, but I suspect you don't even know enough about the manga to do it. Which is why you are avoiding making a real counter argument.
>>87384416
That really does nothing to explain Willy's continued "communications" with Thugboy, and how he seems privy to the Superhomey's plans to attack him.
Warren is practically broadcasting it later on, when Thugboy is stewing over them underestimating Willy, and then Willy himself is musing about how he sorta preferred being underestimated.
>>87384498
I don't engage in One Piece discussion threads on /co/, I report them.
I have read enough volumes to get the gist of the story and characters.
I am simply mocking you for putting up your kiddy manga as something with more emotional sophistication than Empowered (the topic of the thread btw), which admittedly isn't the apex of english comic depth but effective nonetheless.
>>87384610
Once again.
>I'd challenge you to dismantle my points I made and counter them, but I suspect you don't even know enough about the manga to do it. Which is why you are avoiding making a real counter argument.
>>87384660
Again; not going to engage you in One Piece discussion,
Just laughing at you using it as en example of "Serious adult stories for serious adults like me".
Ha.
>>87384718
Then you admit you are just here to shitpost. Got it.
>>87384725
Yes, I'm just mocking you, you are pretty fucking slow on the uptake.
>d-discuss muh Shonen
>>87384758
I would enjoy a legitimate discussion on storytelling structure. We can swap to Empowered as the discussion example, but no one will even feign interest in one.
>>87384850
No one is going to discuss your Feels about One Piece. Let alone debate them
>>>/a/
>>87384904
It's a discussion on storytelling structure. Not one piece. I just said we can use whatever example you want. Including Empowered.
>>87384850
This is why you got called for being a Faggot, expressions of contempt for the material in a storytime thread.
In fact it is you who are doing the shitposting.
>>87384946
>Want to discuss Empowered
>This is shiposting, somehow.
Do you even stop to think?
>>87384975
>We can swap to Empowered as the discussion example, but no one will even feign interest in one.
Yeah no, fuck off back to >>>/a/
>>87385002
If you don't like Empowered, why are you in this thread?
I'm actually pretty stunned this thread is going to hit bump limit
>>87377377
>I'll pick up with Volume 6 in 2 or 3 days' time
November 1st is Dia de los Muertos, day of the dead, if anyone dies on Vol6 you HAVE TO storytime it
>>87368394
I'm really interested in this comic but it keeps me losing when dialogue becomes too dense and basically says nothing. I can maybe understand it from Emp, speaking in a way that shows off her insecurity, but it's so tiring.
>>87385745
Same, I basically skim those parts for key words then move on. Caged Demon Wolf's gimmick was funny at first, but in this volume it got way too verbose.
>/tg/ and /a/ show up
>the thread goes to shit
>Thread is now over the bump limit due to the retared OP shitposter.
Now that I don't have to worry about pushing it over the edge...
Fuck off already. You aren't fucking special for having read something millions of people around the world have read before so stop acting like people on a weeaboo board couldn't possibly have read one of the most successful manga of all time.
If you see this Storytime bro, I want to say thanks for sharing over the last couple of weeks. I've been enjoying the hell out of this. I was not ready for thise deaths though. Fuck man. Emp breaking down nearly made me cry. Poor Spooky. She's a bitch but she didn't deserve this. No one deserves that.
>>87386413
Holy shit you are petty.
>>87385812
I have to be in like a weird special mood for the Caged Storyteller to really get into his chapters. Most of the time I just skim over his dialogue but once in a while I manage to read his stuff word for word and am impressed by how big it is.
>>87387062
where the hell do you think you are
>>87387229
I forget sometimes. Just don't act like this during storytime. I'd rather not have the OP stop storytelling Empowered because of it.
>>87379130
I thought willy said their job was to kidnap a superchicka that could withstand his fire
I wonder if the age at which Spooky made her pact has affected or stunted her emotional development. She was what, 14 or 15 when she started high school? Maybe she's unfortunately still sort of emotionally stuck at that point. More elaboration on why she feels so badly would be welcome, from everything we've seen of young Spooky she was a normal young girl, not at all ugly just a little awkward like many teens are. She may well have grown to be tall and buxom and even if not with maturation she may not have even minded (look at Ninjette, flat but that's never stopped her or bothered her all that much). Lots of young girls feel inadequate but many get by with a vague sense of dissatisfaction and don't descend to the depths of fragility self-hatred that Spooky has displayed.
>>87387062
Don't want people mad at you? Then stop shitposting and ruining a storytime because you can't contain your urge to jizz about the glory of one piece all over the place . You almost singlehandedly killed the thread with your stupid when people could have had legitimate discussion later.
>>87387487
If you don't like Empowered and don't want to discuss it's story development, why are you still here?
>>87387537
What the flying fuck are you talking about? How the hell did you confuse one piece with Empowered?
>>87387558
>Thread in auto sage
>People discussing the story now

That's what I'm talking about. If you don't like Empowered and don't want to discuss it, why are you here?
>>87387593
I can't tell if you're pretending to be retarded via claiming one piece shitposting is empowered discussion or just actually retarded at this point.
>>87387616

Empowered discussion now that the thread is autosaging, but nah anon thinks he's hot shit so he has to come and shitpost again.
Neck yourself, or go to /a/ and scream about One Piece there. Preferably both.
Well. This sure took a turn, haha.
