Do Japanese people like to watch American Cartoons? Is there more on this topic?
>>
>>87343994

>Simpson's humour is dark
If you think about it is true but so many darker cartoons have come out since that The Simpsons appears so tame.

Anyways, if you search on pixiv you can find japanese fanart of cartoons, from Adventure Time to South Park, though the later has tons of BL

But I guess asking on the streets won't get you tons of answers since there was no 'cartoon' boom in Japan like the anime boom here in the US.
>>
>>87344248
Japs like South Park? The Chinpokomon episode shitted on the entire Japanese nation.
>>
>>87343994
I'd imagine they do, only westaboos are a smaller community. Really feels like Japan has been opening up to the rest of the world recently.

Yeah. My guess is that they like the dark humour you are unable to get in most anime. Gintama and Osomatsu-san are examples of popular comedy oriented anime (Gintama has been running since 2003 and Osomatsu-san sold very fucking well) and they are light hearted humour, mostly slapstick and funny situations. The darkest comedy anime I know is Panty and Stocking and the show was inspired by Drawn Together, and it didn't do as good in japan as it did here.
They also loved Happy Tree Friends.

Also shipping. Even in HTF.

Without a doubt, Disney/Pixar is the only big successful Cartoon here in Japan.
Some people like the Simpsons and South Park, but they definitely aren't popular as much as America.
99% of Japanese people see Snoopy as just a mascot character that representing America.
They even don't know what Peanuts is, because I've never met a Schulz fan yet in my whole life in Japan.
And nobody really cares Marvel, DC and whatever, because the art-style is too realistic and uncute, and the main reason is that Japanese people can't read English books.
Damn I wish /co/ had flag display.

This was never theatrically released in Japan. Not that they were offended or anything, it's more that it was such a small-studio release that they didn't particularly care.
>>
>>87347198

You should introduce your countrymen to the Loud House.

Also I cannot comprehend how you can enjoy 3D animation. It baffles me.
>>
>>87347198
I remember a manga way back where the foreword was a translated note from the author where she talked about Charlie Brown:

>“I soon became a fan of [Charlie Brown], but even before that I had a surprising if naive realization, which was that ‘Americans also feel affection and sympathy for this sort of person.’ To us Japanese, Charlie Brown’s character seems ‘Japanese.’ When I think back it’s laughable, but at that time (even though I’d been a fan of American movies and listened constantly to American music since childhood) I only had a stereotyped preconception about Americans–cheerful, sociable, positive, and fair-minded, if a little rough-and-ready… [b]ut when I read Charlie Brown, ‘the scales fell from my eyes.'” (trans. Jules and Dominic Young, OL Shinkaron vol. 1 p. 7)

I would have expected he'd be slightly more popular, but the title of the recent The Peanuts Movie was turned into "I Love Snoopy - The Peanuts Movie" so I guess they like Snoopy better. Still, they managed to sell some cereal a couple decades ago.

There's a really sad story about DreamWorks here in Japan.
HTTYD2 wasn't released in cinemas, so some enthusiastic fans started a campaign to bring the movie in Japan, but it ended up with nothing.
So I'd say DW is unpopular here, and the BlueSky films are almost non-existent.
Strangely, Minions recorded a smash hit, probably because they look cute and catchy.

The Japanese do like much older western cartoons as far as I know.
Wacky Races and Tom & Jerry (the latter being one of the favourites of Anno) are still very popular there, and there have been Japanese commercials from each. The Flintstones was also popular for some reason.

You're assuming that all the Japanese are some monolithic group entity that are all patriotic. I'd wager that most average people in first world nations aren't really very patriotic, or think their country is the greatest thing on earth. Most people are just apathetic. I don't get insulted when anime or foreign films make fun of the US.

As far as I can tell, the big thing that is actually mainstream in Japan American casrtoon wise, not just some niche interest, is in a word: DISNEY.

Disney seems to be huge. Frozen was huge, but one big thing that was wildly more popular in Japan than in the U.S. was Lilo & Stitch.

This led to Stitch merchandise, tons of it, Stitch getting top billing in the park there, and of course, an entire Stitch anime.

From a report about Japan, and visiting a store there:

>The 2nd floor was mostly stationery and plush toys, including an extensive area called “Disney Avenue”. This was an exciting area for us, because one of Ed’s favorite characters is Stitch, and he’s super popular in Japan, starring in his own anime show. As far as Japan is concerned, there’s Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse and Stitch, and then there’s everybody else.

http://www.toughpigs.com/my-week-in-japan-1/

On the opposite side, American superhero movies used to bomb in Japan even when they made bank in other foreign markets. Still a dedicated group of followers, but not mainstream, that fandom was niche and specialty. Critics blamed this on Japan having their own version of superheros, like magical girls and sentai shows.

Ahahaha, that second article:
>the independent-girl-power theme was a part of the film's appeal in a conformist society that is beginning to deal with ingrained chauvinism
>somewhat unconventional dual-female lead characters

Third one:
>Undoubtedly, Japanese audiences are responding to the same qualities that have turned Frozen into a global phenomenon. Not only is the music catchy, but the story is morally nuanced enough that adults seem to enjoy it as well as children. And then there’s the fact that Frozen revolves around the relationship between strong, commanding female characters who defy the “Disney princess” stereotype (even though they technically are monarchs).
>“Unlike in the United States and other nations, we deviated from the strategy of catering to families and specifically targeted Japanese women,” Ihara told the Japan Times.
>It’s an intriguing ploy. After all, Japan’s not exactly the land of female empowerment.
These writers haven't got the slighest clue of what they're talking about.

On a related note, it's likely that Your Name is going to outgross Frozen.

The cold interview method is skewing results. He should have named shows specifically. Most casual Japanese animation viewers have watched Disney films, considering Frozen was the top movie of all time in Japan for a short while, but many of them think those films are Japanese.

You'll just have to talk to some Japanese people like I have.

This is a compliment to Disney's marketing more than anything else. They tailor everything to each market. The films are tightly localized, the tone and mood of the ads and even the movie titles are completely different.

You also have to keep in mind that we're talking about the larger, casual audience. They're not different from the casual audience in the US who don't know that Despicable Me is French or that the Nut Job is Korean.
>>
Anime comes from them loving Disney cartoons.
The whole artstyle of huge eyes, teh animation technique and all of that is directluy lifted from old Disney.

I don't know about the regular Japanese folk today but they must have loved non-native cartoons back in the day.

>>
I don't have time to read through this thread, but I'll point out that Adventure Time (that's the one with the yellow dog, right?) is the only Western cartoon I see on tv here.

There are only like, ten channels in Japan, the rest you have to pay for or watch on sites like Abema. So things like Nickelodeon or Cartoon Network or Disney are only for those who purposefully go out of their way to buy those channels to watch (presumably for their children).

Japanese television also has the option to switch languages (if the show permits it), so you can watch Adventure Time with Japanese dub or English VAs. Presumably you can do this with pay-for-view channels, but I've never purchased any since what's the point.

Not really sure how Netflix has changed viewing habits of the normal Japanese person, since it's only come out a year ago and has had trouble getting a strong user base from what I've seen.

I don't know why people ITT think South Park is famous here.

Well written kanji is like calligraphy in the West.

Most of it is near incomprehensible chicken scratch and the only reason everyone can read it is because there is a rigidly adhered to stroke order that lets you understand what a kanji is, even if it looks like a drunk child scrawled it out.
