It was mentioned that home world has resource problems, which is why imperfect gems like Peridot are made.
Since gems live forever they could just take their time and only create perfect gems anyways, which implies they are in a hurry for some reason.
Since they wanted to turn earth into a weapon instead of properly colonizing it (which would have meant their homeworld is dying for some reason) I came to the conclusion that homeworld is fighting a war with someone. Other gems, or other aliens.
