I honestly cherry pick episodes from the first season to watch (usually the "my girlfriend is the moon" arc, the tween terrorists Fire bending cocktease Master etc.) and watch books 2 and 3. It does get better, but the first season is uneven.

The first season is a bit weak, it's the second and third seasons that people are mostly talking about when they say how good the show is.

This largely comes down to the fact that the series follows a three-act structure with each season being an act. The issue is that since the seasons are the same length the first season needed a ton of padding in order to make the first act last a full season.

Honestly, I have more problems with the first half of the third season than with the first one.

They go back to the village of the week formula, the gaang wanders around aimlessly stalling for time until the invasion comes and the Zuko subplot isn't god tier for the only time in the series.

At least in book 1 they had the excuse of being a new show finding what makes it click.

The first episodes of every series are usually weak. The best season in my opinion is 2.

I don't know about comparing seasons, but I've liked the show ever since they first met King Bumi. So, what, episode 3 or 4?

I'd disagree with shit but the pacing is a bit weird, they have the two invasions and Aang learning firebending which are the main plot points for the season but that's not enough to fill an entire season so they need to pad it out, this results in a drop in the overall tension of the story right when it should be reaching its peak which makes it feel like it's moving even slower than it actually is (and it's already a bit slow)
