Originally, Madelyne Pryor was supposed to be a normal woman who Cyclops married because she bore an uncanny sorry resemblance to Jean Grey. Afterwards, according to Claremont, Cyclops would semi-retire with Maddie to his cabin in Alaska to raise his child, Nathan, and serve as a reserve/auxiliary member to the X-Men.

However, Marvel editors wanted the Original X-men (including Jean) to re-form and become X-Factor, so Jean's resurrection was retconned so that Jean and the Phoenix were two separate people, Jean was kept in a cocoon at the bottom of the Long Island Sound instead of becoming the Phoenix, Maddie was retconned into being a clone of Jean created by Mister Sinister, then eventually making a deal with N'astirh to become the Goblin Queen in the Inferno event, and Nathan would be sent into the future and eventually become Cable.
