The sexual frustration thing was Nite Owl and Silk Specter, I thought. It was literally foreplay to them.

The black and white thing almost seems like a shot at Ditko himself, or at least Ditko heroes after a certain point, who has a very unique philosophy that isn't quite objectivism anymore and also can hold a conversation.

A lot of the characters had sexual hangups as part of their story. Hooded Justice was gay. He liked rough sex, particularly with younger boys. He got off on being able to beat people up as a crime fighter. Capt Metropolis was HJ's lover, so we know what he was into. Silhouette was a lesbian, who presumably got to beat up on men as an outlet.
Dan's sexuality was tied in with his hero identity. He needed to be out there in costume fighting badguys to get it up.
Jon was basically an H Bomb that needed to get off once i a while.

People who fail to realize that he's a deconstruction of heroes like Batman, who like him for basically the same reason they like guys like Batman. They really dig the black and white morality (he literally wears it on his face), the use of violence, teh "common man" appeal of him not having superpowers but still somehow being a superhero. Heroes like Rorshach and the heroes he lampoons are typical "lone wolf" heroes who simultaneously insist on a very strict morality, but at the same time refuse to subject that morality to the judgement of others. They're hypocrites. Judge, jury, and executioner. Put him in Judge Dredd, and he wouldn't look out of place.

So yes, Rorshach is the definition of edgy. I don't know if Moore did it on purpose, but his origin story hints at it. Apparently the murder of Kitty Genovese spurred him to take up "heroing". That murder was widely reported as the litmus test of America's failing morality. People are told to have watched it take place, not giving a single fuck, or even turning up their TV's to drown out her screams.

In reality, she was attacked once on the street, and people who saw shouted at the attacker to get the fuck away from her. Which he promptly did, after which Kitty went into her appartment building. The attacker came back with a knife, and stabbed her inside the building, with zero witnesses. Then she bled out and died.

Rorshach and hte people who like him are the people who desperately WANT that fabricated story to be true, so they can hold themselves up as a beacon of morality. I used to know a guy who used to go on and on about "justice" and "standing up for the underdog", which always ended up with violent fantasies about taking out the enemies of his chosen victimhood group. That's the sort of person who likes him unironically.

However, lots of psych teachers still present the horrifying (and less accurate) depiction of events when covering it with students, since it's such a damn good illustration of bystander effect. So I suspect most people in general aren't aware of the real story.
