Did you guys ever stop to think that so much of what we see as iconic to Superman was put in the comics to synergize with stuff for casuals like the Radio Show and the Serials?

All of the below were added to Superman from outside media

> Flying
>Jimmy Olsen, Perry White and the Daily Planet
>Kryptonite
>Batman team ups
>"Up,up and Away!" and "This Looks Like a Job for Superman!"

I really like the idea these characters were bigger than there medium from almost the beginning.

>Batman team ups

What the fuck? That happened in the comic first
>>
superman isnt just a comic, and every so often another superman from different media gets something so right, they would be stupid to leave it out
>>
>>87136408
The same happened with Batman, mate.

Alfred? Batcave? Some iconic villains and other side characters? Come from other mediums.
>>
>>87136408
Luckily 'Smallville' doesn't seem to have had any lasting impact.
>>
Cavill Superman was the inspiration for New 52 Superbro being braindead.
>>
>>87136408
>>87138222

Maybe because much of these were good ideas?
>>
What people around here don't really get is that it's completely okay to add something from another medium to the comic canon as long as said thing is good.
>>
>>87138828
But Superbro happened 2 years before Cavill
>>
>>87138828
>this is what you get when casuals go not muh

Fucking idiot.
>>
>>87139362
Supergirl's blue heat vision and blue instead of yellow behind the shield should be changed in the comics to match. Honestly i think Supergirl deserves a whole makeover show and comics to give her a sense of individuality but still show her as a member of the house of El
>>
>>87139317
Yeah, this. It's not like other media can't have good ideas that deserve to be acknowledged by the comics.

An actual team-up between them happened in radio first. But I can't remember if it happened before their Justice Society appearances.
>>
>>87138222
Alfred was in the comics first. But thin, mustached Alfred came about because of the Batman serials, where the actor was thin and had a mustache.

Okay here's how it works, the first time they appeared together was on the World's Fair Comics cover in 1940. But this doesn't really count as a crossover, a lot of comics did this and they weren't officially acknowledged.
>>
>>87145453
Alfred was also originally a comic relief character that tried to be a detective but was horrible it.

Then they made a cameo in All-Star Comics in 1941 to help raise money, but it still wasn't really a team-up.

And then DC did World's Best/World's Finest comics and had Superman, Batman, and Robin on the cover but not in story (It wasn't until 1954, when they were forced to reduce the number of pages for the comic that they consolidated the Batman and Superman stories into a Batman/Superman team-up story)

On the radio show, Superman teamed up with Batman and Robin in 1945 and they became occasional guest-stars. (IIRC Roy Thomas even made that radio episode canonical to Earth-2's Golden Age Superman and Batman)

Arguably their first team-up in comics was in All-Star Comics #36 from 1947. But they didn't really operate as a team; they had a meeting and split up for different missions.
>>
>>87145823
Tell me more about this radio show that Roy Thomas made canon.
>>
>>87145907
And the first official Superman/Batman team-up story in comics was in 1952. So yeah, unless you count covers, the radio show came first.

It's this one:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Adventures_of_Superman_(radio)

The problem is a lot of episodes are missing, including I think part of the first Superman/Batman story.

In World's Finest #271, Roy Thomas consolidated all the varying Superman/Batman team-up stories (with I guess the help of Jack C. Harris and E. Nelson Bridwell, who're credited for contributions)

In the story, Earth-1 Superman gets taken down by Atoman (who was supposed to be a robot that E1 Superman made in a story).

While Superman's unconcious, his dream is basically a adaptation of what happened in the Batman/Superman team-up on radio.

Forgot to mention in >>87146223
Powerman is the name of Superman's robot with that costume. Atoman is actually a villain on that same Superman radio show. I haven't found out which episodes he was in yet, so I don't know how close the comic was to it, but he didn't wear a costume in the radio show; that was something Roy Thomas added (it was coincidence that the costume happened to look like a design Earth-1 Superman would use)

Naturally the twist was that Atoman came from Earth-2 and not Earth-1.

And so here, Earth-2 Superman confirms that the dream E1 Superman had pages earlier actually happened on Earth-2. Between that and Atoman, I guess it's possible that some stories from the radio show probably happened on Earth-2, but not all of them (IIRC, Superman in the radio show came to Earth as an adult).

DC is pretty much built on synergy. It's why I get baffled when /co/ isn't rages against it as if it's always terrible
>>
>>87146973
The problem I think has more to do with what gets added or subtracted. Like for instance I'm not really fond of the designs for Captain America's costume since the first Marvel Now. I like the film costume and I think it worked for Ultimates (which was where they got the movie design in the first place) but it doesn't work for me in the current books. It probably also doesn't help that Steve Rogers has been written badly during the Alonso era (ie Hickman's Time Runs Out, AvX, and some others; I'm not including Spencer because I'm waiting for the story to end before passing judgment)

Like adding Harley, Coulson, and a Sam Jackson-esque Fury is fine. In Ultimates it was a completely new universe so you could just be used to Fury looking like Jackson. And you could still have both Furys running around in 616. Adding a Sam Jackson-esque Fury while subtracting original Fury (by what he did in Original Sin and where he ended up), that's not fine.
>>
>>87145670
They held on to some comic relief aspects for a while after the change but then dropped it at some point, probably before the 60's.

>Adding a Sam Jackson-esque Fury while subtracting original Fury (by what he did in Original Sin and where he ended up), that's not fine.
The sad thing about that is that post Secret Wars they could have just said he was always Black; just one more missed opportunity in the reboot that wasn't.
