And you know what there was to DL? Fucking almost nothing, even when using "deep web" shit from way back when. Used to go to IRC channels to just DL music videos.
Took fucking forever to even find a trading FTP, where assholes with 10 whole gigs worth of shitty resolution anime series would only allow 1MB to be DLed from his server for every 2MB you ULed, and only for shit he didn't have.
Fucking shit like this was a godscend until napster and its clones became popular.

It basically became the worst of limewire with other crazies out there ruining it for everyone else.

Scanning for shit back then was awful too. Just took too long and it's enough to give up and head to safer waters, which had newer stuff quicker.

Basically, it's just like today, with people getting onto the newest fad and getting more/newer stuff, until the next big thing hits and the old big hit loses its base.
IRC is still surprisingly as consistent today as it was back then though.
