The character derived from a series of variant covers in which Gwen Stacy was drawn as other heroes and villains. Marvel liked the Gwenpool design, so they decided to turn her into her own character. The character is not Gwen Stacy though, nor is she an alternate version of Gwen Stacy from another universe.

Her actual name is Gwen Poole and she's from a universe much like ours where Marvel comics exist, and something happened that transported her into the mainstream Marvel Universe. So, using her knowledge of everything Marvel-related, Gwen Poole is trying to stay relevant and popular, because she realizes if people don't buy her comic she'll fade into obscurity and die and that terrifies her.
