Member when Animaniacs took pot shots at Power Rangers because they were angry that Power Rangers got much better ratings on Fox Kids despite Animaniacs being a much better show that had actual effort put into it?
>>
I always thought Power Rangers was dumb, even as a kid.
>>
>>87044460
Those guys were fucking vindictive. You should see their attacks on Disney.
>>
>>87044460
I thought it was because they just ripped on everything pop culture.
>>
I don't remember because I was watching Power Rangers instead
>>
I hate to use this commonly said phrase, but Animaniacs was made as much for adults as it was kids.....and most adults at the time found Power Rangers to be asinine foreign confusing crap....much like Pokemon, or DBZ, TMNT minus the foreign part, or any dumb action thing that gets big with kids
>>
>>87044518

Nope. The Power Rangers spoof episode was the very first episode made for the brand-new Kids WB Network. They couldn't wait to slap them in the face. Fox was bitter at WB for taking their shows away from them and WB was bitter at FOX for pushing Power Rangers over Batman and Animaniacs. The feeling among the people at WB was that they were pushing out high-quality programming and they felt threatened that a low budget H.R. Pufnstuf knock-off could be more popular with kids than their shows. A few years later, they would be proven right when Fox Kids was filled with almost nothing but low rent Power Rangers-inspired trash.

And the god-awful Disney wanna-be Quest for Camelot at the same time.

I laughed for minutes when I first saw that. Highlight of an otherwise crappy episode.
>>
The average kid preferred Power Rangers to Batman or Animaniacs.

In other news, most kids are stupid.
>>
>>87044548
Yes, thank you captain obvious
>>
>>87044542
This. There is a reason that series is still running and probably has more movies than Animaniacs has episodes

I was more into Batman and Animaniacs, but then Power Rangers came out when I was 12 and I felt I was way too old for it. I always thought Power Rangers was geared towards much, muccch younger kids, though I did see a lot of kids my own age who liked it. It was usually the same kind of kids who were still into wrestling past a certain age.
>>
>>87044649

Probably because it cost more than a million dollars an episode to produce Animaniacs while an episode of Power Rangers can be produced for a small fraction of that cost.
>>
>>87044649
They don't make any cartoons with high-quality animation anymore.
>>
>>87044624
Well the idea that it isn't that Animaniacs were "mad" or "jealous" of Power Rangers...they were just making fun of something they thought was a stupid kid trend, as adult cartoon writers who aren't purely pandering to kids tend to do
>>
>>87044649
The reason is that it's toyetic....Power Rangers was never good, I enjoy it as a guilty pleasure/nostalgia thing but it's more vapid than Dragonball Z and that's a tough thing to achieve....unlike something like say Transformers which has had some decent to very great series over the many years Power Rangers pretty much just regurgitates the same formula and is fueled almost 100 percent by toys
>>
>>87044609
I liked all 3.
You had to be a real edge lord wannabe back in the day not to enjoy Power Rangers as a kid.
>>
>>87044752
That's not true at all anon. Toys are indeed a part of the formula but they haven't fueled the series this long. It's more about the series ability to adapt with the times that even allows it to sell toys

I was too old to enjoy Power Rangers on a surface level, but too young to enjoy Power Rangers for it's cheesy, 'so bad it's good' charm.

I like Power Rangers a whole lot more now than I did when it first came out.
>>
>>87044788
Is that so? I'll be honest with you...I haven't watched Power Rangers in a long time, so do tell me....are there Rangers shows that are generally accepted to be entertaining to adults as well as kids and are that drastically different from Mighty Morphin and the few that followed it?
>>
Even though I had never seen porn, somehow I knew that Power Rangers acting was "porn" acting. Those weird dialogue deliveries, the way they walked and moved, everything about it just screamed "porno".
>>
I always thought the Power Rangers were the real bullies. I always felt sorry for Bulk and Skull. It was clear that the two of them were poor kids and that their behavior was only a result of their poor background. They were always trying to fit in or find acceptance. But what did the Power Rangers do? Insult them and beat them up. Who were the real bullies in that show I wonder.

Especially that asshole, Jason. Even the way he talks you can just tell that guy is a douche. I can see him pushing Bulk over in the school hallway. "Can you hear? The lady said "NO", Bulk. Why don't you go on back to your trailer park with the rest of your poor as shit family?"
>>
>>87044609
I liked all of them, also Beetleborgs and Superhuman Samurai Syber Squad.

Shit, I still watch MMPR and Syber Squad sometimes like I do Animaniacs, Batman, and Freakazoid.

>Animaniacs took pot shots

>>87044570
Wow! This don't mean shit

https://youtu.be/rdoqvIs2gk0

It was just a reference for popular demand, not exacly because they were angry. Tinny Toons also used to make fun of shows that were making more money (see the simpsons and the TMNT episode), and this when during the worst moments of their last seasons (the 90's reference joke season). The producers aways pushed this "shit on everything that isn't warner" agenda, most VA's and animators declared that this was making the shows feel akyward, especialy when Freakzoid had to call Osamu Tezuka work cheap and the main animation staff said it was a low blow
>>
Tiny Toons also took any chance they could to make fun of the Ninja Turtles back in the day. (And they took some really venomous jabs at the Simpsons and in general took shots at Disney whenever they could, including having two Mickey/Minnie expys be chain smokers from a school full of cheats.)

They weren't making fun of the absurdity of martial artist reptiles, they took jabs at it because it was a huge cash cow and they obviously thought how stupid it was kids were buying into it. Hell, Bruce Timm worked on this show and they made fun of *Batman* being merchandised to hell and back at least a couple times.

Animaniacs came off as a little less mean-spirited when they parodied stuff, generally speaking. Buttons and Mindy had a short that poked gentle fun at *the history* of "character chases wayward baby" at one point. But hell, you talk about hateful, half the short where they made fun of Disney's Pocahontas was a song about how it's all been done to death.

At least the Power Rangers one was just having more fun at the expense of the current most popular thing more than being overtly hateful (and an excuse for the Warners to trash the WB studio in a giant robot fight)

...they would have done the same to Pokemon if they'd had the chance.

Politics killed western cartoons for good. It was just far cheaper to take something that someone had already put the work into a repackage it. That's why so many animation studios now are almost entirely use software to do their animation. They, too, realize that in the end; what they're making is disposable entertainment.

It's like that troll webm I've seen floating around here that has someone making Rick and Morty animation on one side and what I think was Kubo and the Two String betweens being made on the right side. The Rick and Morty side just had a guy dragging limbs around like it was a flash game from the 00's. He hit play and Rick just flailed his arms around like a ragdoll, and that was all they needed from the scene.

On the right, it showed a fistfight between two warriors which accentuated their forms and was based on the movements of real boxers.

One of those two took seconds to create, the other took dozens of hours of manpower for what relates to the same amount of time filled. One of those also makes dozens of times more money than the other.

Commercialization killed the western animator.
>>
>>87055829
Because Nintendo and Funimation is full of idiots. They both had the opportunity to foot the localization fees and import it over, but Funimation wanted to hassle, and Nintendo wouldn't do anything that cost them a single cent.

Along comes 4kids proposing to do it on the budget of some duct-tape, a wet-rag, and gramophone. Which resulted in them making millions and pushing everything that wasn't Pokemon off the time slots.

I fucking love it. I hope Toei decides to make Akibaranger S3 someday.

Or, if there is any hope in the universe: Akibarider.
>>
>>87055944
It happened. It's real.

Akibaranger was a for-fun Super sentai season that Toei made to poke fun at their own series and all the gimmicks/tropes they've used throughout the years. It was started by a guy who wrote Super Sentai for ten years and decided that he had enough.

That episode I think was written without him ever watching a Power Rangers episode, and I think that was for the best.

>>
>>87046418
shitting on Tezuka feels like a low blow just thinking about it
>>
>>87059835
Shitting on Tezuka is pretty easy honestly. The man wasn't exactly a saint even if he could be lovely in person, his comics output ranged from Godly to dismal and he did accidentally shunt Japanese animation into the whole lowest possible cost business model (which although the likes of Miyazaki are fond of pointing this out, they don't really address that the market could really only have ever ended up like that anyway).
>>
>>87055939
And ironically enough, 4Kids getting cheap ended up killing them, too. With Pokemon a huge success, when their contract expired the amount Nintendo and the Pokemon Company wanted for the license was more than 4Kids was willing to pay, so they let it go, thinking they could rely on Yu-Gi-Oh and their other smaller licenses.

Then they bit off more than they could chew by trying to have two separate cartoon blocks on Fox and CW at a time when the Saturday morning block was already a dying timeslot. But they still had Yu-Gi-Oh!

Then TV Tokyo sues them because it turned out 4Kids had been scamming them out of royalties for Yu-Gi-Oh. Now 4Kids is out of the animation business, had to restructure itself into the hilariously generic "4Licensing", and now they're dealing with bankruptcy.
>>

>>
>>87056130
>Bonkers himself was annoying as shit.

He wasn't a tenth as annoying as the Warners though. Hell those shits entire MO was just to run around and be as annoying as possible.

And honestly it wasn't even that they took shots at it, hell I wish they did because that might have at least been a joke. What they did instead was basically stop in the middle of an episode to say "fuck bonkers" though in a much more network approved way.
>>
>>87059467
I think it was a bit of that, combined with Bonkers premiering at the same time as Animaniacs and was at the time the newest show from their biggest competitor.
>>
Making fun of entertainment was half of what made Animaniacs. Why are people acting like it was so crazy for them to be taking shots?

Pretty sure that's the movie, not the series, and the reason her tits were so enormous was because she was pregnant at the time and they were engorged with milk.

Oh sure, no doubt. Certainly the later fare couldn't hold a candle to the earlier stuff. Although Ruegger has mentioned that Histeria was actually a product of the Children's Television Act, and funnily enough, the WB hated to promote it for fears of being seen as an educational channel -- so it got a bit screwed from both ends.

But yeah, just speaking in broad strokes here. Trends across all networks.

>>

>I thought the re-import of Power Rangers into Japan is actually successful?Or at least successful enough that they re-import it...

It's more of a cheap and easy way to move unsold Sentai product from the previous year's line. Toei/Bandai just have it repackaged as Power Rangers merch and then use the quickly dubbed Power Rangers series to advertise it.

And the Japanese dubbed PR shows are extremely niche, anyway. While Sentai airs on broadcast networks, the PR dub are always direct-to-satellite and don't even get home video releases. They're obscure and mostly inaccessible.
>>

When I was a kid, I didn't have FOX Kids, so for Beetleborgs all I had was the Shadowborg movie and the Metallix movie. Then one day at a friend's house it was on TV, and Nukus had a new form, the kids had power upgrades, and there were giant robots. That blew my fucking mind as a kid. Once it got posted on Netflix almost two decades later, you bet your ass I watched the whole show. It's not a good show, but it felt great figuring out what the fuck happened.
>>
>>87073230

There's a huge chunk of Power Rangers that Toei never bothered to dub. It was after Lightspeed Rescue and I want to say they didn't pick it back up until Samurai?

The reason I've read is that during that era the PR shows were too similar in plot with their Sentai counterparts so there was no reason to bother dubbing them.

>There's a huge chunk of Power Rangers that Toei never bothered to dub. It was after Lightspeed Rescue and I want to say they didn't pick it back up until Samurai?

It was Lightspeed Rescue through SPD that never got dubbed in Japanese.

There are also chunks of the Zordon era that didn't get dubbed (the tail end of MMPR season 3 didn't get dubbed, also they switched casts partway through the first two seasons of MMPR when the dub switched networks).

This episode aired at pretty much the peak of my Animaniacs fandom as a kid. I'd been recording dozens and dozens of episodes off of the Fox Kids broadcast, and I had enough internet in 1996 to know all about the upcoming network shift. So I got up extremely early that Saturday morning to catch the two new Animaniacs episodes that were premiering, but after looking up the episode listing just now, the Power Rangers segment is the only one of them I still clearly remember. Apparently the Warners met Sherlock Holmes too, but that completely slipped from memory.

Looking back, I'm not quite sure what 20-years-ago-me saw in it. I mean, it had funny bits, but every clip that I found hysterical back then leaves me with no reaction now on rewatch.
>>
I loved Animaniacs and Power Rangers as a kid, and when I first saw this parody (when it was aired right after the KidsWB premiere of Wakko's Wish to fill time), I loved it precisely BECAUSE it skewered my favorite show in ways that showed they at least actually watched it; Beyond the surface level parody, they actually made fun of the NON-action portions of the show, something most adults didn't seem to realize it even had. Like, having the Warner Siblings being polite, well-spoken, multidisciplinarian geniuses who also take time to volunteer with kids after school is I think, STILL the only MMPR parody I've seen to make fun of how absurdly perfect the teens were.

"Gee Yakko, that sure was a neat song about the importance of flossing!"
"Ahh, thanks, kid! Here, have a million dollars!"

Considering Tiny Toons shared staff members with the Simpsons.

It's just that I feel like most people judge the whole franchise based on MMPR (much like Transformers with G1), or the shitty ones that got more publicity for some reason (Turbo, Samurai, Megaforce)

Because there are better seasons (ESPECIALLY in terms of humor, most of them just run with the cheesiness and make fun of themselves)
>>

Honestly, when I was 6-7, I thought PR was the coolest thing on the planet but I watched a rerun of the show on Cubix once and it was so horrendously stupid and cheesy that I almost dropped of an aneurysm.

Tezuka was Mushi Productions, not TMS. Hell, it doesn't even share history with TMS. Famicom most likely does not care.

Reminder that Laura Haruna is a kind, nice, relaxing and beautiful girl who is bright, excellent to be with and energetic, she also gives what for to people who cross her *cough*Roberto*cough*.

Also, Laura Haruna = Chuck Jones Bugs Bunny, enough said.

The 'Super Strong Warner Siblings' episode was 100% meant as a backhanded jab at Power Rangers and Fox Kids. I distinctly recall Tom Ruegger admitting as much at a panel not too long ago.

Big X was done by TMS only because Mushi was full and Tezuka left Mushi in 1968 to find Tezuka Pro, also the 1st Mushi went out of business in 1973, a 2nd Mushi was founded in 1977 but Tezuka had nothing to do with it.
>>87086785
That and mostly Lupin III (namely Cagliostro, Red Jacket and Fuma), Akira and Little Nemo, most of their staff was even trained by pre-Ghibli Hayao Miyazaki himself in the early 80s before he left for Topcraft.

Tiny Toons also shared some Mighty Mouse staff as well.

Actually, from what I've seen, the hardcore Barney fans think the Backyard Gang videos were basically the show trying to find itself, and think the first 6 seasons are so are the show at its best. They think the stuff from 2002 onwards with Dean Wendt as Barney is inferior.

Every decade or so Sentai likes reusing certain themes (dinosaurs, animals, cars, ninjas) because the target demographic is young children and they wouldn't care or probably even know.

MMPR is the Dino show of the 1990s, Dino Thunder is the Dino show of the 2000s, Dino Charge is the Dino show of the 2010s. Thunder was a pseudo-sequel to MMPR but Charge is, as far as I know, completely unrelated to either.

Referencial humour only works if the stuff you reference will be known forever or if the jokes go beyond "DURR it's a reference".

At its worst TTA was worse than Animaniacs but at its best it did what they did way better. Animaniacs depended too much on the references while TTA used them as spice for its own jokes (like Looney Tunes did).

Anything he parrots is only correct accidentally, and by far outweighed by whatever idiotic bullshit he makes up to justify his imbecilic delusions.
