Afer watching the show, it seems to me that part of the reason they went with Misty in the show was to give a connection to the police department, so that could be in the mix more. I 100% agree with you. Luke should've been interacting with the thugs and criminal underworld a little bit more, actually keeping to the nature and spirit of his original series.

I felt like the show was just a reaction to that, so they went the other way. Lots of daylight scenes, lots of Harlem as a community (which I think would've worked better in a 2nd season where Luke would've been more established) and changing Luke from being an NY street dude to son of a pastor from Georgia and constant emphasis on him being educated, a former cop and marine (even though it added nothing to the show and his comic origin would've worked far better)

Luke really should've been the urban hero, involved in cleaning up the streets after having been involved in them years earlier. I think if they focused less on featuring musicians and Harlem locations like the theater they could've focused on the street level side.

Comic artists, especially colourists seem to have huge problems depicting people mixed with black. They just draw them/colour them with same skin tone as the black parent.
