What do you think of ULTIMATE X-Men? I've read the first 60 issues and can't decide if I like it or not, some of the stories are really good but most the type it just makes me angry. The character designs can be too cartoonish at times also considering they're going for the darker Ultimate universe, it just doesn't really fit.
>>

the only good thing to come of the ultimate universe was The Maker
>>
It was absolute dog shit

I never finished the run, because after a couple dozen issues I realized it was terrible and I didn't like it

Ultimates (except for Loeb garbage), EARLY Utlimate FF, and Ultimate Spidey was the only good books in Ultimate

The character designs piss me off, they make Jean look like a fat lesbian.

The hell is Storm standing like that for? Turn Colossus into a set of lockers and she'd look like a high school girl being asked to the prom.

A comic where otherwise good ideas were generally squandered. By the time Bendis came on it was kind of shitty. BKV's run didn't improve it and Kirkman's was pretty fucking bad due to various combinations (Kirkman being an overrated writer in general, him obviously using Marvel to boost his name and not caring, the fact his run was nothing but an endless placeholder for the Bryan Singer run that never materialized).
>>
Same OP
I read like 65 issues in a few days then just decided to stop
I've heard it gets even worse towards the end, Kitty and Jean lead them and they try to grow crops in a utopia like place that president cap gives them
Then there's a crossover with the all new X-men or something?

Killy was qt as fuck in it, especially with her crush on Spidey

Ultimate X-Men is by far the weakest of the big Ultimate trio, and though Ultimate FF has some really big names working on it and modern BMB is awful, Ultimate Spiderman is the only series with staying power that's still worth a read.
>>
>>86860999
The Ultimates 1 & 2 were great, I've read the first dozen FF and they seem pretty good. The early Spiderman ones I enjoy more the the original at times. Worst one I read was Ultimate Daredevil and Electra, dont' even bother, it's literal feminist propaganda and horribly written.

at the time it made more sense, now it's dated and almost like you said cartoonish. also it was always hit and miss even then. it's got some decent arcs, but the misses where like wtf?

they also kind of experimented a lot with u x-men. they tried extra hard to stand out by being opposite or edgy to a fault.

but again at the time it was a lot darker than now. at the time they had a different look and with ultimates where considered closer to what the general public expected from a movie. wolverine was almost villainous, magneto was a piece of shit in no way a hero.

by the end it was very different from marvel 616. idk i liked it. but i can see why others wouldn't.

i think the mistake people make is reading comics that are 10-20 years old and think meh this isn't impressive today. well yeah but you have to really remember at the time no one was doing what they where to such large characters and what lead to the idea and what political climate we where in (maybe the authority and they where jla-ish but not even the jla, this was the x-men by name and everything). now it's not relevant at all.

early ultimate f4 was shit. reed becoming evil was the best part of his character existing at all.
>>
>>86861066
Ultimates is fun, Ultimate Avengers is cool too, I'm just talking about the mainline ongoings that carried the universe. If you want some good limited stuff, Ultimate Iron Man from Orson Scott Card is really good.
>>
nowhere as good as ultimate spiderman... i did jack off a bunch to ultimate x-men as a kid though
>>
>>86861107
That's not "early FF", that's after FF and most of the Ultimate universe was wrapped and done.
>>
>>86860677
her face is puffy in that drawing but that fucking body is not fat, except for dem titties.

her look was to be alternative as fuck, storm too. with the tattoos and piercings. it was just the time when tattoo shows where getting big with teens so it was cool to be an alt kid.

as time progressed they started to look more like their 616 because artist i guess forgot what they looked like.

Remind me again how Magneto was in the wrong when the humans did this?
>>
>>86861168
again, early f4 was shit, the only time any of it was good was when reed was evil in the end. the entire run of f4 was terrible.

>>86861128
also orson scott cards run on ironman was shit, and completely forgotten. i think they tried to say it was some stupid kids tv show in the ultimate universe.

i agree with ultimates 1 and 2/ult. spider-man being the only consistently good parts of the ult. universe.
>>
>>86861212

Two wrongs don't make a right
>>
>orson scott cards run on ironman

It was so edgy and random that I kinda liked it
>>
By cartoony I mean shit like this. During this episode Wolverine, Kitty and Cyclops go to the savage land and Logan literally attempts to murder Cyclops over his jealously for Jean. Meanwhile Beat back home is hooking up with an online romance who unknowingly to him is The Blob setting him up.

This shit is just weird.

Different doesn't always equal good. At the time UXM was coming out, you had books like New X-Men (even though I think it's a bit overrated and uneven and REALLY hate Morrison's shitting on Magneto), Exiles, X-Statix, New Mutants/Academy X, Mystique and maybe some others I'm thinking of that were all far better than UXM. Ultimate X-Men isn't "bad now but in the context of it's time it was fine". It was a mostly mediocre to bad comic even when it was being published.

The problem is that the book never had any real coherent vision or theme beyond "HATED AND FEARED" and "the movies, I guess". There was no real establishing the mutants' place in the wider world of the Ultimate Universe or what sides generally wanted what. Personally, going full "hated and feared" from the outset was dumb: mutants should've been regarded as a curiosity. Some hate and fear them, some think they're cool, some want to use them for various means, others don't care. Treat them more as a subculture or an emerging generation in a world that doesn't know quite what to make of them.
>>
>>86861331
was that when young stane sadistically killed two kids by dropping them off a building

that shit fucked me up
>>
>>86861212
he wasn't helping mutants, he was a selfish piece of shit and killed lots of people himself. he was truly villainous 100% of the time. even if the government was bad too.

616 magneto has been right from time to time, and arguably tried peace and helping his people. so maybe not a hero but certainty not "evil".

also magneto maybe wasn't a great dad in 616. but ult. magneto was fucked up to wanda and pietro. in the ultimates they seemed to almost be redeemable and then ult. x-men/loeb fucked them up to be fucking horrible.

Samefag but goddam I just remembered the retcon that all mutants are born from experiments on Wolverine. Bendis is such a retard.

This was actually quite cool

this was also when some two kids actually attempted to burn young Stark alive but succeeded in burning only his legs

I enjoyed it when I was a teenager, especially the beginning up through Mangeto's defeat on his floating rock. Not sure how it's aged.

later arcs got bogged own in bad continuity, and Ultimatum ended the story by killing most everyone and settling the book's conflict.

It's amazing, though, that Ultimate Jean survived.

i agree, different doesn't always mean good. and again i agree it was disjointed from arc to arc in worst cases in the middle of an arc a writer change would fuck up everything.

even cutting story lines half way through and just ending them next issue with zero resolution. it was bullshit.

but it had it's reasoning at the time when they debut it, and it had some cool moments at first. the first arc which was tomorrow people and return to weapon x, solid as fuck. introduced black nick fury as cool casino royal james bond, pushed the x-men to darker fucked up roots. nearly killed beast 2x. it was fun edgy early 2000s, martix stuff. like trying to set up the movie verse version of the comics.

but yeah drastic pointless changes and bad choices made it worse and worse. again i think they experimented the most with x-men to see what would work and what direction they could take the ult. u.

the ultimates was their big this is the main universe title, but it was sooo fucking slow to come out. and ult. spider-man was their most popular by far. but they didn't fuck with those books they kept them consistent until loeb just shit the bed and everything hit the fan. even millar went from delivering steady edgy ultimates, but it worked, to just wtf books.

the rest was...idk, weird and shitty, from ultimate dd, f4, punisher, ult. marvel team up, whatever. there was moments of good but overall just whatever. that entire line imploded. but it was bound to by the end. it did its purpose and gave marvel something to interest people in a cinematic marvel u. and in the end it gave us the avengers we have on screen now.

Ultimatum is mindbogglingly dumb. Magneto rotates the earths magnetic field causing tsunamis and general catastrophe. He then learns that mutants are super soldier experiments and not gods chosen people so he flips the poles back, somehow not causing any further damage.
