Sandman has always played loose with DC continuity, and DC has thrown in plenty of references to it back.

Strictly speaking, they were not canon in the past tense. New DC throws everything at the wall and continues everything that sticks.

But its kind of fitting. In Sandman, all fiction is true and there is no one reality. So Morpheus can fuck around in our world as much as DC, and even Marvel if they got the rights to a crossover. Technically since Sandman goes very meta and put in non-copyright violating references to things, everything from Marvel to Tenchi Muyo to the Disney movies exist in Sandman.
