Can we have a bump-limit-reaching thread about animated musicals?

I'll start. Why is this so good?
>>
It doesn't pull punches.
>>
>>86799204
because the film was playing against the big boys now
>>
It was a colossal middle finger to Disney. Art is always better when it's spiteful.

1. the music is GREAT

2. the art is GREAT

3. the music is FUCKING GREAT

Get out of here Steve Martin.

Okay, faggots. Let's be real about Prince of Egypt. Despite being a pretty decently executed movie, it still just screams "board of directors made us add..." Basically, the whole movie hinges on the duality between Mose's life in Egypt and the life he created by reconnecting with his people. Yes, it's a kid's movie and yes it's an interpretation of religious events that historical never happened, but it's still a huge detriment to anyone older than 10 that the Egyptian royals are painted as horrible, irredeemable people hell bent on power and nothing else. Rameeses had the potential to not be a total asshole, but they botched that, probably on purpose because the higher-ups thought people wouldn't like it. Not to mention the by the numbers kids movie stuff. Why is the villain song even in the movie at all?

I don't know. What do you think?
>>
>>86800357
I disagree, they did a much better job of humanizing the Egyptians than they usually do. Rameses' father was kind of evil, but I think Rameses was actually pretty sympathetic.
>>
>>86799204
You're playing with the big boys now.
>>
>>86800558
>than they usually do
That's why I'm frustrated. Because this could have been the movie to set a new standard for the Exodus story, but apparently people are too afraid to show the Hebrew's oppressors in any sort of positive light. Again, I think it goes back to this being a fictional story. The bible's one sided, so an adaptation should be too, right?
>>
>>86800633
Adaptations that change too much tend to fall into the "I know better tone". For a good example see the new Ben Hur - it messed up the whole thing by making Messalah more sympathetic, making Ben Hur seem like he was just too spiteful to let go.

In a Bible story, play the "bad" guys as too sympathetic and you'll have everyone asking why God wanted them gone in the first place instead of just asking Moses to convert them or some shit.

Can we also talk about how holy musical batman is the GOAT live action batman movie?
>>
>>86800558
I wouldn't say he was "evil", just a heavy traditionalist.
>>
>>86800357
Completely disagree, while Ramses's was in the wrong the film did a good job of sympathizing with him compared to the actual Bible. In the Bible it was basically an asshole who God decide to force to become more of an asshole to justify wrecking all their shit.

The film on the other hand was about two brothers who despite love each other are forced to face of, one who is put in the position of power to do the right thing but still is painful for him because it involves fighting his brother and the other one born and raised with hard traditions and values, who continues to be stubborn as to not look as a failure in the eyes of his father and his own religion.

The silent, understated method makes it scarier than any edgy R-rated interpretation could've been.

I'm not sure what movie you're talking about but I do remember seeing the trailer for the new Lego Batman looking great.

It had a ridiculously high budget as far as 2D animated features go, and was very well cast.

Because Hebrew Overlords tell you that it is good

Why is Rameesees always portrayed as a younger guy in maybe his late 20's while Moses is an old man? They were both supposed to be relatively the same age, and grew up together.
>>
>>86800357

Absolutely disagree.

If anything, the entire point of the Plagues song is to show that the Egyptian people are suffering because of Rameses' pride. And honestly, Rameses isn't a total asshole. When Moses comes back, he's super happy to see him again, offering the riches he left behind. There's a moment right before the final plague where he remembers the better times they shared, but Rameses' son reminds him of the dynasty he's building, causing him to double down on his commitment to enslaving the hebrews.

I watch this movie every few months and it really is one of the funniest, best made animated movies out there. Almost every joke lands. The voice actors are fantastic. The animation is great (Miguel leaping to release the sail as his cape billows behind him particularly stands out).

Fucking love the Road to El Dorado man.
>>
>>86805696
I always read it as the difference in a hard life and a pampered one.
>>
>>86805696

Moses isn't exactly older, he's just a little more ragged. A beard adds ten years. Not to mention Moses has been living the life of a shepherd. Walking through rough terrain, being out in the sun all day, probably sifting through goat shit. Meanwhile, Rameses sits in a dark cool palace all day eating his fill and being rubbed in oil
>>
>>86805796
It was still 20 years after Moses left Egypt, they were both pushing late 40's when Moses came back and all the plagues happened.

So says a man who too was considered a god, and therefore had the right to do what he did.

So by killing the firstborns, God essentially 1up'd the Pharaohs on their own apparent disregard for life. This was vengeance, and it could have been avoided, now that I think about it.

Really love how it ends with Moses throwing the Ten Commandments on the ground and shattering them, forcing his people to melt down and then eat their golden idol, and finally ordering that 3,000 of them be killed.
>>
>>86803394

Rameses is sympathetic, because he believes he has to live up to his father's legacy.

His dad was the one who said "they were only slaves" when talking about crocodiles eating babies
>>
The fact that Rameses is made Moses's brother instead of his uncle shows that you're supposed to sympathize with him.

Moses was the greatest sinner in the Bible.
He broke all 10 commandments at once.

Chico y Rita is a Cuban Jazz Musical about an up and coming Blatino composer in segregated Cuba, and a Singer he falls in love with, and their romance as they both pursue music careers in 1950's Cuba and America. It's got gorgeous animation all done in an Art Deco style, and heavily relies on actual jazz artists and compositions of the day.

vid related is the movie's rendition of one of the most famous spanish pop songs of the era:

You can't just ask for that. It's like making a youtube video and saying "Okay guys, let's make this go viral." You can't just say it and it'll happen.

Dreamworks used to do 2D animations?
>>
>>86799204
I'm reading the critical reception bit of it's wiki page.

A lot of the criticism seems to revolve around it being too serious and I can't help but think that's not something that'd be said if it was live-action.
Where people just not ready for this film back then?
>>
>>86822212
yes, people weren't ready for 'serious' animations in the 90s

and,
