I'm a bit underwhelmed by this. the art was alright, and the story was sort of cute, but it's just not hitting home. The story felt rushed, like they tried to cram three issues worth of story into one issue without drawing out any of the potential each story had. The art style was cute enough, but it felt too much like it should be used in an Archie comic or something.

This betty book was disappointing though. The story didn't go anywhere, the gags fell flat, relying on songs in a comic didn't really work, and the most critical problem is the art was stiff. I can forgive the rest but stiff art in a book based on old toons is just criminal.

That was strangely enjoyable. Naturally there's something lost since it's a print media with no music, I do like that they're taking a lot of elements from different periods of the Betty cartoons together. It's also easy to see this is Giz's art and style, but I think it works for the book, despite some style clashing. I'll probably get used to it, though.

Honestly, I'm fairly mixed on a whole thing. There's definitely a Flintstones feel to it, the commentary works for the most part, but a lot of the dark humor tends to stick out like a sore thumb. One minute you'll have talking prehistoric animals and classic puns, and the next a pterodactyl is straight up eating someone in a gruesome fashion. The contrast is way too jarring and it's a big factor of why I can't stand Deadpool comics. It's not bad, but it's certainly not this revolutionary comic people make it out to be.

I don't consider it revolutionary by any stretch, but it is by far one of the more interesting and readable books out at the minute. I know there was an instance in the first issue of a guy getting killed but I don't think there's been too much gore in the book has there?

I think it works to point out it's humans back at the beginning, when they're still figuring shit out, but with the intelligence to run shit that makes it funny. Like the idea that they all live together and have civil conversations, but then invent TV and don't realise to not broadcast a gruesome scene the first time they have a chance to. That cracked me up.

It's not violent for violence's sake, to explain myself badly.

I think they're made Fred a great leading man right off the bat, he really feels like some guy navigating a maze of weird shit that is being built around him and trying to find his way in it.

I really can't think of many current ongoings that I'd recommend as quick as flintstones comes to mind is all. I like it, it feels fresh. Especially compared to shit like Champions. I was shocked Flintstones is a DC book, it feels way more like IDW or Image or something.

To stay on thread, I was hoping for a similar fresh take on betty with the new series, and I don't hate the classic story vibe they're going for gisele's art isn't fluid enough.

Howard Chaykin as a cover artist? Interesting choice. Maybe they'll get Frank Miller next.

The art's okay, but it doesn't work at all for the comic. It's really stiff and bland, which is the opposite of what a Betty Boop piece should be. The whole comic is a bit too cutesy and safe.

I'm not convinced all those songs really work in this medium. Maybe they would if I was more familiar with 1920s and 30s animation, but as it seems really odd to have music feature so heavily in a medium that you can't hear.
