I think it gets mixed up with how the show runners talk in interviews about how they're using their show to explore themes like faith/guilt in DD and misogyny in JJ. I haven't liked Mike Coulter in...in anything I can think of. Guy is the worse actor to get a role this big. Despite him having NO presence and little emotion the show was overall really good. I can only imagine what it would be like if they hired someone with personality to play Luke. Other than him my only real problems (and this might have been a budget issue, which I can understand) were every ones attempts to fight him. The soundtrack was surprisingly good. You also have to remember that ostracizing/bullying kids who get good grades and/or people who try to advance their socioeconomic status isn't exclusive to black people. Plenty of white kids pick on other white kids for getting good grades and plenty of white trailer trash have crabs-in-a-bucket mentality.
