I watched this movie and it made me wonder why on earth does it exist. The plot felt like it was operating under some kind of fuzzy dream logic and I'm not sure what the message of the story was intended to be. I suppose these explanations might work.

That's almost exactly what happened. According to Seinfeld, he was on a plane with Steven Spielberg and he told him a joke that was basically "What if there was a B-movie about Bees?" and Spielberg loved it. He told Jerry "You HAVE to make that movie!" and so he hooked him up with DreamWorks Animation (which was spun-off from his own company DreamWorks and which he was still a consultant at during that time) and Seinfeld got to work on the film, and the rest is history.

You all have Spielberg to thank for these glorious memes (or beemes) we have today. Truly, he was a real Animaniac all along.
