Darkseid wasn't the big bad of the DCU when he was first created. It didn't really happen till the 80's and it was John Byrne, a Marvel fag, who made it happen.

It was always Darkseid, he was one of the first shared villains.

DC didn't really have one the same way Marvel did with, say, Doctor Doom, Thanos, etc. Marvel was the first company to really capitalize on the idea of a shared universe (it'd been used in comics before, obviously, but not to the extent Stan and Jack used it) and they the first to drive home that there's a big bad who's everybody's bad.

Stan created the Fantastic Four PURELY because the then publisher wanted a team book of superhero's to rip on DC's Justice League.

DC created a shared universe before Marvel did, learn your actual comic book history. The Justice Society pre-dates anything before Marvel, and Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman were members, even if they weren't active.

At that same time frame, very few Marvel (Timely) characters even knew of the existence of one another.

Darkseid's first major interaction with the DCU after Kirby left was that one JLA/JSA crossover in 1980 and the Legion of Superheroes story the Great Darkness Saga (which was somewhere in the early 80's).

And then he became the big bad on the Super Friends cartoon and the Super Powers toyline. That's where he became DC endboss to people who may not even read comics at the time.

Byrne (at the time he revamped Superman) of course also decided that Darkseid should be a Superman foe too, so that also helped things. So kids who grew up watching Super Friends would go into the Superman comics and then expect Darkseid to be a Superman villain.

Dominators, easily. Classic big bad characters like Despero, Amazo and Starro might be powerful, but they're more straight up JL villains.

Not DC fans, Jim Starlin, his creator, talks about how Thanos and the Eternals/Titans were his attempt to create a New Gods inspired Pantheon for the Marvel universe. In one of his stories Starlin straight up referenced the Anti-Life in relation to Thanos.
