no, the fusion thing was still more of an abstract/magical thing with Giant Woman, since the whole episode was based around improving Pearl/Amy's sisterly bond. Of course Pearlmethyst shipping became more prevalent. We knew they were an all female race/magical beings from the beginning when the premise/concept art was announced, I think. Or maybe very early on in the series? I forget.
The fusion=sex topic didn't really come up until we saw Garnet and Amethyst's fusion dance, which was pretty lewd.
The gay progressiveness bullshit was a gradual process, at least for me, since I view the show as a female empowerment series where the main characters are all conveniently shaped and voiced as females for the fanartists to make lewds of.
I remember people being hesitant on seeing Pearl's relationship with Rose in Rose's scabbard as romantic, and even Jailbreak's revelation as truly "romantic" right up until IanJQ broke the floodgates by confirming Ruby/Sapphire's relations were "romantic" instead of "platonic" when someone asked him on twitter.

Rewatching "Mirror Gem"/"Ocean Gem" and god fucking dammit, she's so much more interesting as a mystical tragic titan than the fucking meme she's become. The two-parter and "Same Old World" were amazing, and "Alone at Sea" was great too, but she needs way more development. It's pretty obvious the writers are putting her aside because they either don't have all the right elements in place to put her into the spotlight, or her character arc is actually quite short and are waiting for some other time.

Hopefully it's the former, and we just need more HW interference before we find out what Lapis was really up to.

Remember that Peridot is quite young and all of her bonding episodes involved her naivety and forgoing her HW customs to conform to Earth's ideals and whatnot.

Lapis has different issues with the CG, but chooses to stay with the only gem who is not associated with the war on Earth, which may be interesting to bring up if the writers choose so.

Besides Lars and the Cool Kids (which I don't remember at all, generally don't like the teen episodes) those were all pretty decent. I guess I'm hard on the first 20 because I was sold SU as being "the best and deepest cartoon of the last 20 years" and was met with with a seemingly childish monster of the week type series. As the broader storyline began to reveal itself I started to get the hype, but I really thought I had been memed hard.

S1 really does have a unique charm to it, what got me into the show originally, but it isn't absent. I think the problem is the plot. Don't tell the lorefags I said it, but I think the show was better when it was vague magical adventures and fun times with no strings attached. As hype as some of the lore-filled moments are, they really lose their magic after you see it once. Now it's episodes like HtD that really interest me, because it keeps the humor and fun I 'member from first watching the show

Currently we had a 35 months run with 110 episodes, talling up to a little over 3 episodes a month with maybe half a dozen ones with really good animation quality.
I'd most certainly take a higher quality episode per 15-20 days any time.

Who else thinks that Lapis and Peridot are going to come into their own soon once shit with homeworld gets real?

Both are going through arcs to acclimatize them with Earth, show them in a lighter "fish out of water" light and give them a reason to fight for it and I get the feeling Peridot is foreshadowed for having some serious bulshit Magneto level powers in the future.
When homeworld comes to fuck Earthy to bits, I really do think the pair will move from meme-status and we'll see their badass sides again.

I completely and utterly disagree. Garnet was quite, sure, but she was not shit. In fact, she was my favorite character all through the first season and most of the second. She didn't get much characterization, even the episodes that centered around her mostly left us in the dark, but she didn't need a bunch of singing and crying for her point to get across. She was the fearless leader, the wise sage. She was the only one to actually trust steven, and she may not have spoken a lot, but when she did speak the characters, and the audience, listened. That's what made certain points in the show hit so hard, like when steven turned himself old in too many birthdays and Garnet fucking broke down. That really drove home how bad the situation was, and really turned the emotion up. Or when steven disobeyed garnet and slapped her, it was a real "oh shit" moment. Or post "the message," when the cgs were trying their best to shield steven from the truth of how scared they were of homeworld impending invasion, we and steven both could tell that garnet was trying her best to keep it together but unfortunately she was failing. In season 2 they even expanded on this a bit with the sardonyx arc, but unfortunately I think they focused to much on fusion and not on her leadership. There's a lot of untapped potential in that well.
