Why does every Superhero origin story have to involve their parents dying? Can't they just decide they want to help people without some tragic death scarring them for life?
>>
>>86329392
Isn't this the case for static shock and cyborg?
>>
>>86329392
For the same reason that every barbarian fantasy starts with the hero's village being massacred by the villain: the writers are hacks.
>>
Superman says hello.
>>
>>86329495
The Kents have been dead for most of Superman's existence.
>>
>>86329392
Blue Beetle and Invincible then? Also Nova (Richard Rider)

Honestly there are a lot of heroes with parents that are still alive, just don't remind comic book writers.
>>
>>86329590
But their deaths didn't motivate him to become Superman.
>>
>>86329725
True.
>>
>>86329725
In a fair amount of versions of the origin (including the Silver Age origin) his dad's word of advice in some shape or form inspired him to become Superman. And Pa's often on his deathbed when he gives these words of advice.
>>
no because going around at night while wearing a bat costume is not something people with normal chilhoods do
>>
>>86329392
Miles Morales
Kamala Khan
Kid Nova (idk his real name)
Luke Cage
Damian Wayne
Obsidian & Jade
Wonder Woman
Batgirl (all of them)
Raven
Wally West

More X-Men than I wanna list.
>>
>>86329392
Having parents holds you back. It makes you weak and less self reliant.
>>
>>86329844
All of which are shit.
>>
>>86329495
Superman's real parents did die in his origin story though.
>>
>>86329777
Wasn't he Superboy in the Silver Age? And weren't his parents alive after he became Superman?

>>86329725 applies to both the Kents and his Kryptonian family. Neither one is what motivated him to become Superman.

bumping cause storytime when the download's finished.

That was The Flash until Rebirth
>>
>>86329474
Yeah but that is so unrealistic
>>
>>86329392

Orphans are easier to write. The only thing worse than dead parents is living parents and the damn trope of hiding secret identities.

And of course people start naming exceptions like that proves dead parents are not overly common in comics.

>static shock
Who?
Are you talking about Static, the character that starred in Static Shock but was never actually referred to as such?

So, I misspoke about Superman's Silver Age origin story, this is actually from the late Golden Age. And it was written by none other than Bill Finger.

Y'know, Wayne Boring should be a lot more well-known than he is. Curt Swan might've drawn the bulk of silver age Superman comics and a good chunk of bronze age ones, but it was Boring who designed the Superman of the era.

And Boring's the artist of this story, if that isn't already clear.

Geoff Johns?

If you get superpowers something tragic is bound to happen to you so the universe can restore balance. Unless that tragic even is your superpowers themselves, in which case, you´ll probably end up as a supervillain.

Pic related.

But for what it's worth, hack writers use things like dead parents as a crutch for easy drama because they can't or won't come up with a motivation that specifically works for the character's personality, often because their characters lack a strongly defined personality.
