Because the whole point of Spider-man was he was an insert for the reader.

He was the nerdy kid in highschool who wasn't very popular. Then when he grew up and moved out on his own he had trouble making rent, paying tuition, covering his bills. It made him relatable and interesting because on top of fighting crime and super villains he had the same problems most of the readers had.

Batman, Green Arrow, Ironman, all billionaires, flashy in costume and flashy out of costume. They over the top.

Spider-man's secret identity was much more humble which made him much more dynamic when he was in costume.

Of course now that's all been chucked out the window because "Hey let's make him a billionaire!"

Marvel and pretty much every other company putting out cape comics try to make the setting as much like the real world as possible so you can have Iron Man use crazy superscience to fight off an alien invasion but the only product his company can sell is a smart phone. Reed Richards can make a ship that can travel through dimensions but cars still run on gas

Also the Spider-Man character has been defined for years by the fact that Peter Parker is pretty much a normal guy who has to balance work, his home life, and super heroics
