I really don't know how people can enjoy this show. Everytime I attempt to watch it, the dialogue is so generic and it just consistently feels like some lame teen drama about discovering yourself. Like, Amythyst's personality is that she is suppose to have a hint of snark to her, but her sarcasm is incredibly generic going as far as saying typical lines like, "Is that what that was?". It's about as bad as having a sarcastic character saying shit like, "Yeah, no kidding, genius!" or "Yeah riiiight, like that'll work". There's so little thought put into making sure the dialogue is interesting or unique. All it does it get the plot from point A to point B in the more boring way imaginable, I have no idea how people can latch onto this so heavily. Everything here just feels like basic screenwriting 101. All I can see when I watch this is lost potential rather than a good show.

Sure most kids cartoons are generic, but SU is clearly trying to be more than a kids cartoon, so it gets graded with higher expectations than something like Mighty Magiswords. I'm not going to grade Secret Life of Pets the same way I would Kubo. And most kids cartoons are comedies, all they need to do is make me laugh, which stuff like Spongebob and Wander do. Steven strives for emotion, so generic dialogue sticks out much more. When a character puts their hand on their face and says, "What am I doing" for the umpteenth time in SU, the repetitive acting starts to hurt the writing even more.

This show is much better at coming up with ideas than actually executing them, because everything involving the Gems and their backstories is interesting. Actually hearing them talk about it is another story.

I feel like I really should have liked this episode a lot more than I did.

Recently, episodes can have great premises but their execution is somehow flat and disappointing. I can't really pin down what bothers me specifically, but I am noticing a pattern where these episodes tend to completely ignore Steven and relegate him to a side character in his own show. People who really like certain gems might not care because they just enjoy seeing certain characters get used, but it does a disservice to the actual storytelling in a way I have trouble articulating. This is coming from a Pearl fan, so it's not that I dislike Pearl episodes, or that I even disliked what was happening in this episode. Something about removing the requirement that Steven participate in the action, make some kind of discovery or observation, or teach somebody a lesson, really drains something vital from the show.
