Marvel has had better comics and movies since around 2010. DC has better characters except for standouts like Spider-Man and the F4 at Marvel. Marvel also has the better shared universe and cosmic hierarchy.
>>
>>86005523
Everything you just stated is not true.

Kek, no. As a neutralfag I can safely say Marvel's been in a drought of good storytelling for a good while now.
>>

I would argue DC has better villains at their disposal
>>

It comes and goes. Once DC used to have better written characters, heroes and detectives, and Marvel mostly did soap operas in comic book form.
>>

No, that is not safe, although it may be true.
>>
>>86005368
Nope

Marvel USED to be amazing up until the late 80s and 90s and then DC slowly overtook them with Vertigo and stuff like Morrison on JLA, Robinson's Starman, Death of Superman, Knightfall, No Man's Land, Kyle Rayner, Emerald Twilight etc.

Meanwhile Marvel was dicking around with shit like Clone Saga, and shitty X garbage like AoA and Genosha... even Hulk sucked and they had him running around in bunny slippers and smart

>Is it safe to say that DC has the better comic books
There are exceptions like Ms Marvel and Vision but ReBirth has overall been very well received (unlike Convergence and DCYou) in both critical reviews and sales.

So for the moment this is clearly true (and if the recent solicitations from Marvel are anything to go by it's not going to change in the near future).

>but Marvel has the better movies
Marvel has had much more CONSISTENT movies. If you like their Big Mac And Fries then when you wander into the drive through you won't be unhappy with what you get; but some people don't like the formula (hence the bitching/trolling about memes and 'quips').

And remember that we're talking about Disney/Marvel Studios in house productions: most of the non-disney Marvel movies (Ghost Rider, Daredevil, Hulk, Fant4stic) have been pretty consistently shit.

And some of that just comes down to taste: I prefer the dark street level Marvel Netflx shows like Daredevil and Jessica Jones, but despised the Disney-fied family friendly Agents of S.H.I.T. At the same time I've enjoyed the whacky comic-book-ness of Gotham and Flash even though it's lower budget and higher cheese than Agents is because it's not even pretending to take itself seriously. But that's just me.

>and their characters are about equal?
Pretty much. You'll get fanbois/character fags/console warriors arguing the point though.

It's another case of things coming down to taste: DC was born out of Golden Age Mystery Men (when no one even thought to question how the fuck the Lone Ranger could come riding up in a fucking mask and not get shot ... because he was wearing a white hat and riding a white horse; OBVIOUSLY he'd get the benefit of the doubt!) and the whole attitude is: SUPER HEROS!

Marvel came about and hit their stride during the 1960's Counter Culture ("Don't trust anyone over 30!", watergate, 'Nam) so it's "soap operas about people with powers."

>>

>Is she really considered a legacy character?
Only in the loosest sense of the term: she's got a totally different costume and a totally different power set; although to be fair Captain Marvel (currently Carol Danvers) has also been used by multiple people with exactly nothing in common (the current Spectrum, for example, was CM at one point).

Marvel's never really had a tradition of passing the mantle like DC has with multiple Green Lanterns and Flashes other than when dealing with Time Travel Shenanigans; although they seem to be going at it hard the last couple of years with Totally Asian Hulk, Ms Muslim, Deadboy Nova, and The Spictacular Spiderman.

Like, I get where you'e coming from, but what you're saying about a Big Mac and Fries formula really applies to ANY comic book movie.

I think within the confines of the Hollywood formula (the generic three acts separated by action beats), Marvel does make better movies. It's not a matter of consistency (what does consistency even mean?), it's a matter of the in-house Marvel movies actually being enjoyable, disposable action to a majority of critics and movie-goers.

The DCEU has the exact same formula as the MCU in terms of the Hollywood structure of the movies, so I don't really get why you'd imply that Marvel alone is guilty of that.

>I think within the confines of the Hollywood formula (the generic three acts separated by action beats), Marvel does make better movies.
I would agree; esp when it comes to balancing large teams as in Avengers I and II and CA:CW.

But it's hard to watch them close together and not notice just HOW similar they all are: very similar colors; very similar scores; very similar quips/comedic beats; ect.

There's no question that GoTG was a MCU movie, for example. You could just drop Iron Man or Cap into GoTG II and they'd fit right in.

And that's not a BAD THING for the most part. But it's hard to look at the two Thor movies and not think that they would have been vastly superior if they'd been free from needing to fit so tightly into the same box.

So I'm much happier with Daredevil being on Netflix and (R-Rated!!) Deadpool being done elsewhere.

Maybe we should just stop with the console wars and judge things by there objective quality
>>
>>86010533

Yeah, definitely. No denying that. Can you honestly look at the DCEU movies and say differently though?

It's just like there's this different standard for movies made by either company in some people's eyes. They're the same type of movie, with the same type of action beats and the same silly plot points.

It just seems hypocritical to point the finger at the structure of movies in the MCU or the DCEU exclusively
>>
>>86010708

To be fair, the DCEU movies all have the same fucking third act. The first and second acts might be different between movies, but the third act always in a big CGI-heavy shoe-horned showdown.
>>
>>86010641
But nobody cares about "objective" quality. People enjoy things for subjective reasons, and that's an objective fact.
>>
>>86010734

Which one didn't end in a big showdown?
>>
>>86010613

Totally agree with everything you're saying. I think they've got a really good formula for the team movies, but I wish that they gave interesting directors more creative freedom within the individual movies.

It's frustrating because you can see these awesome glimmers of creative potential in all the cape movies/tv shows. The first shrinking scene in Ant-Man was so much fun at the cinema, but the movie gets so bogged down in exposition setting up a villain to fight in the third act. The idea of examining a real life Superman's impact on the world at large in BvS is a sweet idea, but Snyder expresses that dilemma through a series of CNN debates, graffiti, pickets and over exposed religious imagery. Stuff like this happens every time! There's so many good ideas in these movies that get lost somewhere in translation and it's pretty disappointing.

I'm *hopeful* that Thor 3 might not be so bad with Taika Waititi directing, if they give him some freedom, but I doubt it. Whatever. Hunt for the Wilderpeople was a fun ride though.
>>
>>86010863

Civil War, for example.
>>

>>
>>86010961

I'm not even that guy, but there's a fight between all of the Avengers, with a short break, followed by a fight between Iron Man, Cap and Bucky within like 10 minutes...

What we mean is that there's a big, general push for a massive amount of action in the third acts of these movies. Civil War *definitely* fits into that mould.
>>
>>86010271
who won?
>>
>>86010898
>I'm *hopeful* that Thor 3 might not be so bad with Taika Waititi directing, if they give him some freedom, but I doubt it.
Hard to say. They *DID* kick Bendy and the other comicbook types to the curb though; and I'm sure that they're all looking at how popular Jessica Jones, Daredevil, and Deadpool are in comparison with, say, Agents of SHIELD. (I know that AoS is a Prime Time show on Network TV; but I'm talking about how popular the darker more adult writing is and how that might work its way back upstream in the future solo movies).

But you've got a better shot with the upcoming DCEU movies (which are still wobbly and trying to find their stride) than the MCU movies (which are not about to change a literal Billion Dollar Formula).

I find the worst of Marvel's movies to be innoffensively mediocre, and the best of DC's frustratingly mediocre (not counting the Nolan films, the first 2 of which I liked).

This might be because I don't particularly care how a Guardians of the Galaxy movie turns out, but feel that characters of Superman's caliber deserve a certain level of respect and reverance.

I don't read much of either's modern comic book output, so I'm not really in a position to comment, but the very best comics I've ever read have all been DC/Vertigo; Animal Man, All-Star Superman, Sandman, Preacher, Swamp Thing, Watchmen, etc; as far as I'm aware, Marvel has never produced anything on that level.

Where DC really blows away Marvel, though, is in animation. Even ignoring BTAS and Bruce Timm's other work, DC have a track record of quality feature-length animated movies, whereas Marvel made 2 good cartoon series in Spectacular Spider-Man and Avengers: EMH only to replace them with the bulging backs of dicks that are Ultimate Spider-Man and Avengers Assemble. Marvel animated features have all been meh to shit.

The funny thing is I've been reading Marvel longer and consider myself more of a Marvel fan, but in terms of quality, live action movies & tv of the past decade or so are the only areas in which Marvel have DC beat.

Both produce fairly poor comics in general. The constant switch of writers, the convoluted macro universe storylines, the overall lack of consistency and quality across the titles.

Good comics are a weird occurrence, but most of what we could call "the epic ones" are under the DC brand.

The movies, are also just average high budget blockbusters, one company makes movies to pander universal audiences and the other one just pukes poorly edited turds.

Actually I have just been browsing a site listing comic book sales figures and I came here to start a thread just to mock Marvel's complete and utter failure when compared to DC.
Marvel had a thing going with Civil War II but finally people caught up with Bendis' bullshit, so that's dropping too.
The only other comics that Marvel seems to be able sell, is Amazing Spider-Man, Star Wars, Deadpool and Captain America Steve Rogers, and most of the times they don't make it to the top 10 even, rarely even in the top 20.
Top 20 comics are always dominated by DC. Last month for example, 18 DC titles and 2 Marvel titles in the top 20. June had 15 DC titles and 5 Marvel titles.

And I'm not even a DC fanboy, to be completely honest with you I have not read a single DC comic book in my entire life. And that's as much of a fuck I give about DC.
But I'm just so fucking glad Marvel's sales are plummeting, it's just what they deserve.
You crap on our favorite characters, you get crapped by us, that's how it goes.

I totally agree with that.
That's when I gave up on them too.
But... with things as they are now, I miss even the 90s.
Marvel is at their worst ever, now. And I do mean ever. Even their no-superheroes 50s were better (Actually the 50s were great.)
