Gaz's character is one of those things that during the huge gap between the end of the show and start of the comic they realized was a little lacking and decided to tweak and improve on.

Gaz was never really an apathetic black hole of nothingness, though. People just assume she was because they let her goth aesthetics color their vision of her.

Sure, she's somewhat apathetic, and sarcastic, and cruel. But she's definitely not apathetic about getting her video games, and there's an entire episode of IZ that basically revolves around Gaz just desperately wanting her once-a-year chance to eat pizza with her dad. That one made me a little sad actually.

I remember that in the Taster of Pork episode there was a scene where she feels infuriated that she missed the family annual dinner for the first time because Dib's curse turned her into in a guinea pig and she couldn't leave Membrane's labs until Membrane was able to revert the curse through his own methods.

I know I'll sound like MrEnter here, but it kind of annoyed me how as the show went on, Dib went from merely having bad luck but winning a few number of times, to a guy who never wins and gets shit on at every turn (those "his head is big" jokes got really repetitive fast). Like, in season 2, it seems every back-to-back episode was dedicated to Dib getting shit on.

That being said, I've heard it was done intentionally to make audiences like him more, as they thought he was rather annoying in his early appearances.

They develop Dib's relationship with Tak's ship, and it's pretty funny, but no actual return of Tak in sight.

Outside of the first two issues, every story is episodic and there isn't any overarching plot.

I thought she was only mad that she missed the new pizza at Bloaty's. Maybe I'm just forgetting the line about family dinner, but either way, the fact that she missed the new Bloaty's flavor got more emphasis.
It woulda been good if they expanded more on her desire to hang out with her dad, though. That'd be a good direction for her character.

According to the DVD commentary, it was actually an animation mistake. It was still a good touch though.

I liked the early episodes where we see Dib & Gaz spending time together at home, and it implies that they actually have a domestic life where they enjoy hanging out even if they squabble a lot. (Which is actually a pretty realistic portrayal of siblings as children.)

In those earlier eps, your imagination filled in the blanks, and the characters felt like they had more dimension. But then they all got really really extreme, and they're still that way in the comics (despite any tweaks).
