No, Transformers original series was produced in the US by Sunbow.

There were anime sequels to it when Takara wanted to continue after the US-based production ended, but the original series is a western cartoon.

Japan's first DBZ intro is great, what the fuck are you talking about.

My only beef with it is that the rest of the soundtrack was done by Kenji Yamamoto, who was notorious for plagiarizing music from movies for the shows he was working on.

For example, Battle Point Unlimited (Trunks' theme) here:

was plagiarized version of this song:

PROTIP: The reason why the show had:
- human supervillians (and not just in one episode)
- a frequent focus on Transformer "powers"
- a main team stationed in a single city with a variety of statures and abilities,
- Optimus Prime talking about not feeling like a hero in the opening episodes
... is because the show was conceptualized as just that: Transformers: Heroes. It was a superhero show. Then they decided to name it Animated to more obviously separate it form the live action movies.

Besides, the human villans were fun as fuck and made the Decepticons even more dangerous in comparison.

Animated was reworked into a show for preschoolers in Japan.

Each episode had a segment at the end featuring the Otoboto Family, actors who taught the children how to transform and play with their toys.

In Japan, Transformers is strictly for babies and the American cartoons are severely simplified for the younger demographic.

The names were always changed in the original Japanese dubs of old Hanna Barbera shows (they were restored in later redubs for consistency).

My favorite in the Japanese dub of the 1967 Fantastic Four cartoon, which was retitled "Space Ninja Golmes"

https://youtu.be/gWDmQjLnAiQ

They changed the story in the dub, so that Reed Richards is actually a futuristic incarnation of Sherlock Holmes. He takes his crew into space and they become Space Ninjas: Susie, Fireboy and Gunrock.

All the villains got new names, too. Like Dr. Doom is now Akuma Hakase (Dr. Evil). It's an amazing dub.

I have to at least thank the dub for existing, otherwise I would have never picked up the manga (which I finished). Criminally underrated.

I remember taking what was the latest volume at the time up to the cashier at Barnes and Nobles. As he checked them out, he said about the FMA volume that my sibling was getting (and I would get to read afterwards) "Oh this one, this is GREAT." Then when he checked my volume of Zatch Bell, he said "This one ..." *shakes his head" "Terrible. Just terrible." I love both series but what the fuck.

If it makes you feel better, I'm a femanon and even I got a hard time from my sibling for being into Zatch Bell because "they cry ALL the time" and it was "too cheesy."

It's a series that is really difficult to get other people interested into. The outside looks too weird for most people, so they dismiss it.
>>
>>85945427
Even in Japanese version they got Bane's sound mixing wrong.
>>
>>85948127

Yeah. An online friend and I were pretty into it, and I still think of it fondly from time to time.

I still kind of have a complex about anime and shit, my gf gets sad because I don't let her watch when I watch anime. She's a huge weeb too, but for whatever reason it's hard for me to just point the screen there way. One time the player changed to some camgirl getting naked while I was talking to her, for some stupid reason, and she looks at me and says, "Why is she naked?" I thought it was playing a dorky star wars cartoon.

My older brother eventually turned into a bigger anime dork than I am, for some reason. It was a pretty radical change.

I'd argue that even most moeshit, is still more artistically rich than something like Adventure Time. The only western cartoon that even comes close to a good anime is SU, and that's probably because it isn't the weekly funnies and tries to ape a lot of stuff anime does.
>>
>>85954884
>Anime is filled with tons of trash.
It is, but the sheer volume that floods out every season guarantees at least 2-5 shows each quarter that I'll find enjoyment out of. Not to mention the massive backlog you can accumulate from all past series that have aired. Where are you going to find animated sports series like One Outs, Ookiku, or Chihayafuru in the west? What about a gambling/suspense series like Kaiji?

It's a good year on /co/ when there's maybe 2-3 new shows that are worth having threads about.
>>
>>85955051
>I'd argue that even most moeshit, is still more artistically rich than something like Adventure Time.
Then you're wrong. Adventure Time is it's own thing and tries new things constantly. You're generic moeshit is just trash that's trying to be something else and is a soulless cash grab. I bet you're only saying that because the art is more realistic.

You're right, I did forget that AT does do some cool things sometimes. I really enjoyed the stop motion episode.
But you're also right that I think even moeshit is more enriched than the average western cartoon because of it's more realistic art. Cartoons nowadays are only a step above stick figures, I'd appreciate if there was more diversity in style in the medium but because action cartoons have gotten the shaft in favour of the weekly funnies, more realistic art in cartoons is but a dream, fuck even Ben 10 is simplified bullshit now.

And yes every anime tries to be realistic. Every anime will have their backgrounds attempt to be realistic as possible with some exceptions where it's a realistic setting but drawn in like pencil or something like Nichijou but its still aiming for realism.

Not the same anon.

Also that anon is dumb for thinking more realism = automatically better/"artistically rich", but they are right that anime does have a larger range in what it tries to do visually. Mostly due to how many shows are pumped out each year.

Tonkatsu DJ Agetarou and Luluco are far and away in style from more 'realistic' anime like Battery or 91 Days, just to use recent examples.

>Every anime will have their backgrounds attempt to be realistic as possible with some exceptions where it's a realistic setting but drawn in like pencil or something like Nichijou but its still aiming for realism.
I honestly don't know how you're even trying to measure 'realism', here. Visually, people in real life do not have giant eyes and tiny dot noses. If you're talking about the setting, I have no idea how you just entirely skip over every anime that incorporate fantasy or sci-fi settings and elements.
>>
>>85955932
Dumb anon here, when I say 'realisim', I mean the artists attempt to give the characters proper proportions instead of whatever the fuck Clarence is. Tonkatsu and Luluco too put effort into their character designs.
>>
>>85944582
Japan tends to like shows with cute main characters. Gumball is pretty much that. They also really love Spongebob and Star Vs.
>>
>>85955972
'Proper' is also entirely subjective when it comes to how things 'should' be stylized.

If you think western character designs just come across as lazier that's definitely fine, but there is no way to objectively define for every culture what they should and shouldn't be doing when it comes to stylization.
>>
>>85956027
I suppose that's true. I just wish lazy character design wasn't so rampant in modern western cartoons. Is it the fault of executives? Is it the fault of artists?
>>
>>85954884
Cartoons has ton of trash too.
>>
>>85937240

The anime had the superior soundtrack, but the story was a mess after they abandoned the manga storyline following the Valentine incident. Drifters looks to be taking the best of both worlds, the dude who made the OST for the Hellsing anime is back to do the music, while the animation will be by the Ultimate team.
>>
>>85938270

In what way? While the character designs weren't for everyone, the overall animation had far more polish to it than the majority of G1. There weren't nearly as many quality errors.

Why are you comparing short series to TV shows like Adventure Time and Clarence? Luluco and Tonkatsu are both short shows made by small teams on a small budget with unlimited freedom.

>I honestly don't know how you're even trying to measure 'realism', here
I very clearly pointed out backgrounds as what I was talking about. And sci-fi and fantasy settings can be portrayed realistically. AKA my image. Very very rarely will you get a show that doesn't try to have backgrounds that look like they could have been traced from photos. An example would be PSG.

And in regards to character design anime designs will always use selective elements of realism (usually body proportion and anything that isn't the face) and add all of their stylization to the face or hair or something. That's the extent of human character design in anime and the exceptions are very few. You may see one for a joke character or something. And I'm not saying that's bad but if you're going to say that anime, which will always follow the same design trend (realistic body and kinda cartoony face) is less lazy than cartoon character design which has a main concept of individualized silhouettes you're flat out wrong. Of course I'm talking to the other guy and not you on that.

And the only reason he thinks that is because he grew up in an environment with cartoons and when he looks at anime it's new to him. But it's not new. Anime has changed very little stylistically over the years. It was the most different in the beginning but around the 80s to now there's little actual difference.
>>
>>85956055
In the west we have the big 3 who have the most power when it comes to shaping what western tv animation will trend towards. And the tv animation industry just isn't as big, comparatively. Many of the best artists in animation are also snatched up by movie studios like Disney/Dreamworks/Pixar or game studios.

It's not like anime isn't plagued with knock-offs, incestuous content trying to follow the current big thing, or just plain bad shows. But there's a ton more studios producing a ton more content, so it's a lot more grassroots (that's the best word I can think of). By sheer probability and the existing competition, there's inevitably more variety.

Fucking amazing how someone could actually type that out seriously.

One of Kabaneri's biggest selling points was
>hey, it looks like one of those cool 80s show! But it actually moves!

>Very very rarely will you get a show that doesn't try to have backgrounds that look like they could have been traced from photos
Someone could spin this around and ask why there's rarely a cartoon that doesn't have a jumble of flat shapes as backgrounds. Even within your shoddy and ill defined definition of realism, the backgrounds on a show like Grimgar are distinctly stylistically different from something you'd see come out of KyoAni. Windy Tales' backgrounds are miles different from something that's much more bleak, like Casshern Sins.

I know. It's pretty amazing when someone actually knows what they're talking about on this site. What's the difference between 80s anime and now? Shading, color, and a slightly different way that people liked to draw faces. Compare that with 80s cartoons to today's cartoons.

>why there's rarely a cartoon that doesn't have a jumble of flat shapes as backgrounds
You couldn't say that actually because few cartoons even do that.
Yes all shows are going to have different looking backgrounds but they're all realistic. There's still room for stylization. Windy Tales is not trying to be realistic and is an exception like PSG.

How is a statement this broad supposed to even have meaning when you could apply this to western cartoons too? Ever seen that gif used for shitposting that morphs between modern cartoon MCs to show that they all have the same head shape?

>There's still room for stylization.
This is also way too broad. Literally every piece of visual media has room to push its stylization even further, but knowing when to stop is also part of the artistic process.

I did apply it to western cartoons. In fact I asked you to compare 80s cartoons to today's cartoons and don't lie to me and tell me there's not a significant difference. Not that this is any better but I'm just showing that other guy that the way anime looks is in no way new or novel.

Even within a show like Steven Universe, no two characters are designed alike. Compare this to ANY anime where the proportions between two characters who are, say kids, will be exactly the same. Compare Peedee and Steven, two kids, and they're very different from eachother in design.

>In fact I asked you to compare 80s cartoons to today's cartoons and don't lie to me and tell me there's not a significant difference
Then why are you lying about there being no marked difference between the most prominent visual trends between the 80s anime and now? There are entire niche subcultures devoted to 80s-90s anime because modern series don't appeal to them visually at all.
>>
>>85938594
>Can they make something not hype?
They actually can. If you download an album and expect nothing but awesome openings you'll be disappointed. They've quite a few boring ones, but their TV openings/SRW title screen songs always seem to be great.
>>
>>85956881
Because anime changes very little comparatively. That's the point. Yes every show is going to look different and you can like the different elements of 80s anime that aren't present today, but these elements are not so large that 80s anime is totally unrecognizable as anime or even that someone who's never seen anime could really tell you the difference in eras. 80s cartoons look more like anime than they do cartoons if your frame of reference is only these new ones. Hell I even prefer 80s anime stylistically to current.

>>
>>85957082
I'm so sure because I've seen anime? I don't really know what you're trying to say there.

The whole point of why I brought up this change of style between then and now thing is that anime has looked pretty darn similar for a long time. People often criticize anime for all looking the same and it's a somewhat valid criticism. People who haven't seen a lot of anime will think they all look similar for a reason. Because they do and only after seeing a lot of them will you be able to distinguish the little things making them different. Nobody will say this of cartoons and that guy saying cartoons look lazy compared to anime is talking nonsense for this reason.

So? So have the people who are turned off by how modern anime looks. If there are enough people like that to congregate and create a niche, surely there's something notably different between the decades.

People who take a cursory look at western cartoons from the mid 00s to now also pull the same shit when it comes to stating that they look to similar. The calarts meme, for instance.

If you've been watching anime since the 80s you're of course going to notice stuff that you liked phasing out BUT THE POINT IS that those changes only matter to that niche because the change isn't really that significant. I'm done arguing this. Yes some say that all modern cartoons look the same but compare these to ones from early 2000s even and they're very different. And within each of these shows are character designs that are all unique. Compare a random SU character to an AT one and they will look nothing alike. Compare a random anime character from one show to another and they'll look pretty similar. The end.

Japanese MMPR dub was pretty much unknown over there, as it aired during late night hours on some pay-per-view channel.

I feel like it was done as a "fuck you" to Saban.
>>
>>85962286

Yet they've continued to dub the series. I think Samurai was their most recent.

Apparently Toei does it because it extends the shelf-life of any leftover unsold Sentai product from the previous. They can repackage it as PR and sell off a few more units while promoting it as something "new".
>>
>>85962617

I'm guessing they're also dubbing the show solely because of some two-way deal in the contract with Saban.

>I'm guessing they're also dubbing the show solely because of some two-way deal in the contract with Saban.

Yeah, if Toei owns the material produced by Saban then they've got nothing to lose by releasing it.

Most Japanese PR dubs are direct-to-satellite, usually on PPV. The dubs are typically done by the Sentai cast, usually because they're still on contract with Toei and have to take whatever assignments Toei gives them.

It's as low-cost tier as you can get, so Toei's got nothing lose, especially if it moves any unsold stock from the previous year.

Funniest thing about Donkey Kong Country was that it was a french series, which was brought into english, and and then later into other languages.

I often wonder what all the songs in the series were like in other languages, and if they put as much effort into the music as the english cast did.

While we're speaking about dubs, the french networks bought Hokuto no Ken without looking at the contents, thinking that if it's anime it must be for kids, and as a result the translators and VAs went no a strike (ofc) until they were allowed to rework the dialogs into more humorous ones. The final product is, well... unmistakable.

This is actually pretty similar as to how 4kids ended up with One Piece. They bought the rights to One Piece as part of some sort of licensed package and didn't realise that it "didn't fit their target demographic".

4Kids basically saw the sales figures for One Piece and thought they had a new Pokemon or Yu-Gi-Oh on their hands. And then they found out how violent the goofy pirate show for children was. Zatch Bell is fucking awesome and so were its dub OPs. The original OPs are dope too, but man do I love the originals.

You know what dub OST was great? Digimon Frontier. They replaced all the hot-blooded rock with mellow, woodwind-heavy, kinda tribal-sounding music, and somehow it fucking worked. That fucking dub OP is my SHIT.

Man, Digimon Frontier. I don't remember much of that show but what I do remember is how the kids would do this weird combination thing to control a Digimon. Between the transformation sequence and going into their mind part with the girl, all that implied nudity made the kid me feel things.

It's still a catchy song. When I was just first discovering online in the late 90s, the fact that Japan had Transformers cartoons for years after the US was the most amazing shit ever to me.

and Autolancher Kamina?

Nah, Starscream is Hiroki Takahashi who is most well-known for Yugioh (Joey) and Prince of Tennis.

Autolauncher is Masami Iwasaki, who also was in Prince of Tennis.

Bro !
I must have all the books, with a few Nick Jordan to boot. That was a big part of my childhood.

I giggled like a prepubescent fangirl when I saw the Bob Morane and Francis Black cameo in La Brigade Chimerique
