Rape has never been a part of any Lovecraft stories. The closest one gets is marriages of convenience. And the only reason we know anyone at all in Lovecraft stories had sex is because they end up having kids. Having kids was the singular reason any sort of sex, never even alluded to outside of their being physical evidence of it in the children, ever happened in Lovecraft, and it was with perhaps one or two stories where it's more vague what anyone's intentions were outside of kids. Given the rest of the stories, that it possibly have been read as rape was probably beyond Lovecraft's ability to comprehend.

Children and bloodlines are the focus of the stories. Those Deep Ones? "Known" for raping women? Never raped. Ever. It was a voluntary exchange of partners as part of a trade agreement between a fishing town and the Deep Ones to get secure fishing hauls each season. The Deep Ones wanted to mingle bloodlines to have agents on the surface. In fact, the first person to mix with the Deep Ones is the male sailing captain who found one of their cults on an out of the way island. Most of Lovecraft's human/monster pairing, when they showed up as there were only a small handful of them, were men and monsters.

Monster rape is only tied to the mythos by filthy fucking secondaries who saw monsters and hybrids and the B-Movies that aped them, which in general had erotic themes of sexual assault as part of their overarching genre. And now people who've never cracked open a Lovecraft story think they know how it works because a bunch of people who can't write a single story with a visible sexual theme worked in a few visual traits or plot points from Lovecraft's stories.

Yes, Lovecraft was a crazy, racist puritan who probably woke up afraid of his own shadow. I mean, like genuinely afraid. But his stories weren't sterilized by him somehow removing the "logical" sex and violence (and there's still plenty of the latter, just not in anyway visceral). Not all stories need it, and his stories were never even remotely about the sex or violence. He wrote stories about a fear of the unknown. A fear of your own family history. A fear of people too insane or too selfish fucking with the lives of others and powers they could not control. Sometimes his heroes won, quite often in fact, but always at a cost to their mental health for having to deal with it. He also wrote stories about comedy, about an appreciation for the colonial aAmerican architecture and life and also being hilariously racist. Dreams. The importance of dreams, the world within them, the value they held for someone who was confined to a lonely house for most of his childhood. Stories and history. Living life through them.

Anyone who considers reading Neonomicon outside of the first passable story or for giggles should just read Providence instead. It actually does something with what Lovecraft wrote and is just a better put together story to begin with.

Usually antiquarian things and classical architecture. His taste in literature was old fashioned before he was even an adult because he grew up reading old books in the family library and imitating them, although he burnt the earliest works because they kind of sucked and were juvenile.

He generally liked architecture, books, and cats more than people, for instance. He also liked ice cream as I understand. He would regularly travel a reasonable distance to get ice cream at a local store. His longer travels were to see the antique and historic buildings of other cities. He initially liked the sweeping majesty of New York's buildings, and the charming brown stones, but grew to dislike it and be fearful and resentful because of the large number of immigrants who were taking jobs out from under him, jobs he felt an intelligent gentleman such as himself ought to be able to do.

He saw himself as a gentleman, you see. Generally capable, well bred, basically decent. No particular talents or experience per-se, but also a generally respectable and well rounded member of society. Of course, yeah, he was misanthropic, and haughty, and had no real experience. So of course he didn't get a job and eventually went back home.

Although time, and the experience of marrying a Jewish woman and separating amicably because he felt sort of unworthy or whatever because he couldn't find work or something else, softened him some.
