Not gonna lie, film and music seem to have the one-up to comics in this regard. I think the most disturbing thing, as in something which elicited a visceral and personal reaction from me in comics, was either from Alan Moore's Neonomicon or something Neil Gaiman wrote.

I want to say something Garth Ennis wrote (Boys maybe?) was disturbing, but generally I think my reaction to most comic imagery is to consider it cool rather than disturbing, scary, etc. I'm not going to pretend that I'm a badass because I cry like a little girl during horror movies, I've just never felt creeped out or scared when reading a comic book.

Would you count things making you angry/irritated as disturbing? Because I think I've had that reaction to comics more so than any others.

Supergod is tops by the way.

Eh, I like Ellis's writing but I really hate his edgy "hardcore" public persona. He isn't going to do shit to anybody.
>>
>>85922792
The lady has a very dull surprise "bwuh?" look on her face considering what she just witnessed.
>>
>>85922792
Pretty good summation of that series itself. Just when you think there's no stone left for the scum of the Earth to crawl under, another fresh pit into Hell opens up before you. Gotham's a better place to live than Hub City, and it's built on a literal Hellmouth that drives everyone insane.
>>
>>85922792
That dead baby looks like he has seen some shit.
>>
>>85922874
They're in Hub City though, you kind of expect it to constantly one up itself in horribleness.
>>
>>85922792
What the hell does "Loush, foul--" mean?
>>
>>85922866
I generally like him, but there's no denying that he can go full edge sometimes. The opening to Orbiter (I think) is an example of this: it opens up with a bunch of poor, filthy, white trash people getting run over by the space shuttle.

It's very much a moment where a group of people are cast as ignorant know-nothings "taking the stars away from us". It's more than a little self-righteous.

>>85922980
I feel like Gotham can get all sorts of gothic, but Hub City is neo-noir, if that makes any sense.
Case in point: DCAU Batman dangles people from buildings while Question torments them with pop songs.

There's a fair amount that results from a lot of English comic writers actually living in America. Neil Gaiman, for example, moved to America after having to deal with the fucking draconian censorship laws England has, though Neil doesn't strike me as Ameriphobic.

>>
>>85922225
The general idea of Supergod is actually pretty interesting
>>
>>85923186
You have to keep context in mind. It came out in 1987 when crime and urban decay in the US had exploded and seemed like it would just get worse forever. A lot of the works of the period were a reflection of that fear, especially from Frank Miller. Plus O'Neill is pretty left politically and was probably horrified by the Reagan years, amping up the despair he wrote even more.

Golden Goat studios used to have some pretty decent disturbing material, before they went all GREED and locked like EVERYTHING behind a pay-wall.

I didn't realize you were disagreeing with me. I'm going to assume you agree with it being misanthropic because, come on.

It was idiotic because a lot of the decisions in it didn't make sense. First off, the whole premise of people literally designing gods is ridiculous. I get that it was trying to make religious people uncomfortable by playing around with their desire to believe in God, which has some merit, but it is still stupid and people don't think like that. You can't have it both ways.

The crowning idiocy though is the dude who blows himself up at the end. Everything might have been forgivable if not for that. He said no future was as interesting as him blowing hismelf up and in so doing causing the ultimate extinction of humanity, but that is ridiculous. The utopia that the Indian god was going to create was inarguably infinitely more interesting than the virtually lifeless rock he ultimately brought about. It amounted to some edgy teenager saying "peace is boring, explosions are kewl, lel, XD".

The multi-future character was clearly nihilistic, but whether or not Supergod itself is misanthropic is debatable. The people in power made bad decisions, and the general bent of the work remains cynical, but there is no crowning statement that all humanity is fundamentally evil, bad, or stupid.

Designing science-based gods felt more like a riff on the popular sci-fi concept of high level science being "indistinguishable from magic", which itself is a pretty condescending idea. All in all, Supergod was more or less a general subversion of that idea: instead of reaching a theoretical singularity humanity's super-tech is compromised by competing geopolitical agendas (although the Boys handled that theme WAY better IMO).

I'm pretty sure that was the entire point. He was basically a superpowered edgelord who went "this is so fucking gay that I'd rather kill myself."

What a shit ending to an otherwise interesting story.

>what the hell
I don't get you anon.

I think the phrase was first coined by Arthur C Clarke, and can be seen clearly expressed in Star Trek (IIRC both TOS and TNG engage with this idea repeatedly). It assumes that people unfamiliar with the effects of sufficiently advanced technology will be unable to distinguish it from magic, but what I really think it's saying is that some people are just more intellectual and able to produce better tech than others.
It's always come off a bit snobby and I think Supergod engages a bit with that idea. Instead of creating technology capable of engendering a utopia, they end up bringing about the world's end. The conversation between the lead scientist and Morrigan Lugus seemed to reflect back on that idea.

It wasn't the point because the character was willing to die for the most interesting future. He could see all futures and wanted the most interesting. There is NOTHING interesting about a lifeless rock relative to one covered with humans. That is completely the fault of the writer. It's a sucky ending all around. The shit I had to wade through to get the end would have been worth it if the ending was good, but it was worse than the rest of the comic.

Though absolutely retarded, it's still an understandable edgelord viewpoint to take.

Diegetically the concept has always been used to give on group of people a clear advantage over the other. When the group with the better tech are the main characters, ala Star Trek, they tend to come off condescending towards character without said tech. I'm not talking about the quote's actual definition, but how it tends to play out in fiction.

>elitist prick
That would actually make me butthurt that I'm not part of the elite, so I would be whatever the opposite is, rabblerouser or something.

I think the best stuff to come out of Lovecraft's writing is the mythos behind it, but I wouldn't say it's necessarily bad writing. Fairly dry and somewhat amateurish, yes, but the man writes terror of the unknown like nobody's business. Possibly due to his own extreme phobias.

Not even that. He didn't choose a non-utopia where humans kept fighting one another and struggling. He chose extinction and the erradication of most life on Earth. Earth will be a mostly lifeless rock for eternity now, and somehow that is less interesting than a utopia that would probably one day spread emergent intelligent complexity of humanity and civilization to the mostly lifeless universe.

It was retarded. They flat out said that the character wanted the most interesting future and then had him choose the most boring future possible by any criteria.

The thing that comes to my mind is the first issue of Big Guy and Rusty, where the giant dinosaur's saliva mutates the people into dinosaurs.

Also the art was pretty messed up.

Yeah, I kind of like this issue because it portrays The Global Frequency in a more negative light. It has a lot of advantages, drawing together experts in all these esoteric fields, but dealing with this kind of ludicrous shit is unhealthy and it's clear in this case that they pushed this guy to the brink and didn't think of the consequences.

I feel this encapsulates the theme the comic is going for. It sets up cute, fairy tale-esque situations and then subverts them by showing a callous and strikingly mundane resolution. The ladybug is a creature usually thought of as cute and somewhat playful - so it is depicted a chitinous, unfeeling insect. The kid's gleeful attempt to play with it is not only naive but selfish in seeing another living being as nothing but a tool for his own amusement. Then by showing the children killing the ladybug it balances and reconciles both its roles on the scene as both wonderful (if not intrinsically fantastic) and real (mortal and non-sentient as real bugs are), and compares it with the duality of the children's innocence as responsible for both their whimsy and cruelty

Don't know why I wrote all. Think I got flashbacks to english class

read an article where the editor or writers or something were commenting on how batman at that time were trying to like, push batman into a darker and darker corner, they described it as "a race to the bottom"

thats the era you get batman taking a scalpel to a baby's throat because riddler stuffed a pingpong ball in it (riddle me that) in dark knight, dark city

people complain a lot about no man's land being a ridiculous plot, but it was really sort of a revitalization for batman (and the gotham knights in general) where they came out of a series of the darkest things one could go through and still had heroism and bravery and all that hero shit (plus they reorganized that branch and got rid of some comics and added a couple new ones and got new writers all around, bringing in greg ruckawho would have a long history with dc)

since then we've had some dark lows (death of the family) but it's usually balanced out by peaking highs

Fuck.

There doesn't need to be a meaning, message, or a point. Sometimes shit is just done to be unsettling.
>>
>>85929894
Not him but there is a point in showing crimes going unpunished, not every story has to be didactic or teach a moral, and not every story has to adhere to a moral axis.

Woody Allen's Crimes and Misdemeanors purposefully shows good people committing bad crimes and getting away with it, the movie's point being to bring into question the nature of morality in fiction. Stories can consider routes that unsettle by showing unjust acts unpunished, or they can unsettle by suggesting there is no right or wrong by avoiding punishment.

Thanks for the storytime!

Sorry for not being the sharpest tool in the shed, but can anyone shed light here about what's really the point of the book?

I get a Lord of the Flies kind of vibe to it, where people revert to their base instincts for survival, and people gravitating towards the person who asserts authority, but I'm sure I'm missing something else.

Also, what is the significance of the dream sequence where the girl is alive?

>>85930037
No, because you're assuming then that story values misery. A story need not condone the actions of its characters, but merely asks us to consider them. In ASOIF (been rereading it lately) the author doesn't pretend that Cersei Lannister is a good person, nor does he specifically design the book around her getting comeuppance (even though she does). There is no lesson attached to Cersei's POV chapters, they just offer insight into a character who normally would have been little more than an archetype.
>>

In this case its not even a bad end really. The "bad" part (dead little girl) is more like the start of the story. It's like getting upset that Alderaan is blown up in Star Wars.

Good point, but I'd still say it has a good ending because Aurora got her revenge on the villain. It isn't really clear if the little girl was even actually killed. It's more like that was a background story to the main one that was being told.

shit happens

the girl is childhood, and her death means she has to grow up

zelie is the fanciful, self-important dick everyone can be
the crazy girl is the one who doesn't want to leave childhood behind (and cries when forced to) and lives only in her memories
timothy is self doubt
grown-up girl is the too-mature adult, who does not embrace their childhood and the lessons therein (this is why she gets fucked when she goes to warn zelie), they want to stay away from it and be an independent adult
aurora is the girl who makes mistakes, gets screwed over, even gives into it every once and awhile, btu wears her mistakes with her because they make her stronger (or in this case, keep her warm, as the mouse's pelt is the biggest example)

hector is childhood romance, it's flightly and fickle and isn't going to last

>tfw just got to the vivisection scene (1294) in Ava's Demon

shit man what the fuck
>>
>>85929680
That's literally the point of the story.

The killer and the girl are just a backdrop, a big, depressing reality behind the cartoony fantasy of the characters. There is no story about the killer and the girl beyond the fact that the guy killed the little girl. That's all that you need to know because it serves the purpose of being grim.

It's about these little cartoon characters who each see the world in a different way, and in the end it could be interpreted that their failure to see the world for what it actually is lead to their demise.

Zelie thinks she's a princess in a world made for her, Plim is immature and self-centered and oblivious to the consequences of his actions, and of course Aurora tries to be fair and amicable but is taken advantage of even when she tries to keep to herself.

These simple, archetypal characters are being contrasted with the unjust cruelty of the world we live in.

None of this is "deep" or pretentious. It's not trying to be high art or anything. It's just a story that aims to make you feel something. If it didn't make you feel anything or think about it and you took away nothing from it, well, I'm sorry got you I guess.

What the hell are you even talking about?
You don't have to be edgy to enjoy this, misery is part of life as a whole, and no matter what you or anyone else says, its always gonna be.
Just because you don't like something doesn't mean it's shit and this most certainly isn't.
It's one thing to be autistic enough to think that every story need a good ending, or a happily ever after, and it's another thing to be autistic enough to believe this and THEN, pretend that everyone else is wrong.

This may not be the best story ever, but it certainly isn't shit, and it certainly isn't shit because of some autistic sperg that just can't handle a story not ending the way he wanted.

Imho, you should just kill yourself.
>>
>>85930575

He had children's toys in his cabin. The way I see it there's two possibilities, he's the father or the killer. The girls body had to be close to the cabin considering the tiny people were able to travel in between them so he was most likely her killer.
>>
>>85930090
I wouldn't call it nice. It has some cute art, but it's shit.

I've seen this story before. The personification of a dead person running around. It doesn't depress me, if doesn't even effect me. What angers me is how shallow and shitty the books you guys praise are.

It's predictable. The only thing that really was shocking was the dead body after I realized it's a gritty "let's see people die".

A meaningless story isn't a story. It's like watching paint dry. I come out with nothing. I can only say the coloring is nice, but beyond that really nothing besides just here's Lord of the Flies and a dead girls imagination.
>>
>>85930840
That's merely speculation, Poirot.
>>
>>85930090

>>
>>85930840
well they all spread out and started doing their own stuff quite quickly so it's not unreasonable to think they traveled far and he may be out their searching for the body which could be why it wasn't buried yet.also they show mouse girl and red head chick with bird travelling there and it is mad far way from it so there probably is a fair bit of distance from the corpse.
>>
>>85930854
>>85930870

>>
>>85930318
Dude the story is just drivel. It has an edgy name and doesn't do anything. Just goes on about a community that falls apart with some flashes of a dead corpse.
>>
>>85930840
also him fixating on the clock and trying to fix it could show him trying to take his mind off the girl missing and you could say it supports him being a killer too but we only see 2 people so it must be remote so why would he worry himself and keep himself busy if he killed her.

There were a lot of pointless gory moments in the comic that pretty much prove it started as a "hey, wouldn't this be edgy?" project. Then the author tacked a little story on to it.

>>
>>85930512
>Now that I think about it, she got the animals to gather at her party in the first place
There was food, which the animals then ate ( along with that one kid) and left after it was gone.
>>
>>85931016
well they could've eaten each other and the comic shows they are not against that, or they could of found food as well. They could clothe themselves with each other and various stuff as well but one of the good thing about the comic i think is that it leaves who he is and the girl ambiguous .good having a nice civil discussion on it as well while these autists are sperging out.
>>

>>
>>85931077
In one of the pages the man was lurking near her body. He's definitely the killer. A corpse smell is strong he would have noticed her. So he obviously knows she's there.

Jane gives warnings about him. If theories are true she's the girl's maturity or instincts.

Child's doll in his cabin with no wife or child things. Like a big bed cradle other toys kids clothes. Only a broken doll which is probably his memorabilia from the girl's murder.

Her body is near his home.
>>

Nah she's the girl's princess. She's always wanted a prince.

Her prince made for her cheated on her. She's more likely obsessed with it. Like how girl's are obsessed over marriage and finding their prince.

Her entire core is finding a man. It's one of her characteristics. Next to being fair and patient.

She's literally the caricature of a princess who was corrupted by the reality of her situation.
