More recent shows have been disappointing to me. The faces are starting to get really damn weird and I'm not laughing as much as I used to in the older episodes

Okay, there's actually a clever story written into that. Richard's father abandoned him as a child so his mother (Grandma Jojo) became extremely overprotective and did everything for him, turning him into what he is now.

Is gumball a slice of life show?

You ignore the key differences between Richard and Peter/ Homer/ Cleveland/ Stan Smith. Where as those four have variable intelligence, a constant mean spirit, and are written as main characters, Richard is meant to be a comic relief side character with good intentions. The trope you focus on doesn't apply to characters that are static, kind, and not key to the entire show. Gumball could work without Richard, where Family Guy only exists for Peter. You might have a point that Richard is clearly not as smart as the other cartoon dads, but the key difference is that he isnt violent or aggressive or cruel and uncaring like the other ones, you can tell he loves his family.

I really don't think the Flanderization was as extreme as a lot of people say. Gumball was a bit of an asshole in a couple of season 2 and 3 episodes but even then, it was only to service whatever jokes those episodes wanted to tell. If anything, I'd say season 1 Gumball was a bit under-characterized. Hell, If you want to read deep into it, I'd say it's a pretty accurate representation of growing up.

Season 1 Gumball and Darwin are naive and sweet
Season 2 and 3 Gumball gets a lot more cynical and mean because he thinks that's what's cool
Season 4 He's still a little cynical but a lot more mellowed out
