Let's have a Jack Kirby thread in honor of what would have been his 99th birthday, and celebrate over sixty years of him working in comics and cartoons. Post your favorite Jack Kirby creations and obscure Kirby facts/trivia here.

You can find out about Kirby's comic career before Captain America: http://kirbymuseum.org/blogs/simonandkirby/archives/category/serial-posts/early-jack-kirby

Evanier claims it was because he didn't want to push other talents off books they wanted to do. Nobody really wanted to be on Olsen, so he picked that one. Also an element of showing off, claiming he could make it sell like gangbusters.

I'll never get over this guy's style. The wonderfully weird, asymmetrical gadgets, the blocky shadowing that almost makes everything look like a printed circuit board, the stocky solidity of every figure -- for me, this will always be what sequential art is all about. Maybe it's just because I read so much of Kirby's stuff when I was a kid, but his work never ceases to excite my imagination.

In the mid-eighties, DC Comics tried a bizarre experiment known as the DC Challenge, a story told by twelve different creative teams over twelve comics, with the catch being that each issue would end on a cliffhanger that the next team would have to get themselves out of. Announced at Emerald City Comic Con, DC is reviving the series in the form of Kamandi Challenge, thirteen creative teams over twelve issues telling one complete story with the classic Jack Kirby character, Kamandi: The Last Boy On Earth.
The original DC Challenge featured the likes of Elliot S! Maggin, Mike W. Barr, Dave Gibbons, Gene Colan and so many more legendary creators. and featured the additional caveat that they could use any DC Comics characters, except ones they were currently working with elsewhere. The series culminated in a jam-packed final issue which was divided among six of the previous creative teams.
The full list of creative teams, via CBR, is
Dan Abnett & Dale Eaglesham
Peter J. Tomasi & Neal Adams
Amanda Conner & Jimmy Palmiotti
James Tynion IV & Carlos D’Anda
Bill Willingham & Ivan Reis
Steve Orlando & Philip Tan
Marguerite Bennett & Dan Jurgens
Keith Giffen & Steve Rude
Tom King & Kevin Eastman
Greg Pak & Joe Prado
Rob Williams & Walter Simonson
Gail Simone & Ryan Sook
Len Wein & José Luis García-López.

http://www.tcj.com/jack-kirby-interview/

Gary Groth (co-founder of Fantagraphics, EIC of The Comics Journal)'s famous interview with Kirby in 1990.

>Stan Lee and I never collaborated on anything! I’ve never seen Stan Lee write anything. I used to write the stories just like I always did.

>It wasn’t possible for a man like Stan Lee to come up with new things — or old things for that matter. Stan Lee wasn’t a guy that read or that told stories. Stan Lee was a guy that knew where the papers were or who was coming to visit that day. Stan Lee is essentially an office worker, OK? I’m essentially something else: I’m a storyteller.

>>85835362

>The romance genre was all around us. There was love story pulps, and there was love story sections in the newspapers. There was love stories in the movies. Wherever you went there was love stories! That’s how we got our new material, and it suddenly struck me that that’s what we haven’t done. We haven’t done any romance stories! There it was right in front of our eyes hanging from the newsstand. A love story! A romance story! So Joe and I sat down one night and came up with the title. Young Romance, and Young Romance sold out.

Ya'll ever see Kirby's submission for the Jupiter probe plaque? He felt humans should be depicted as power and adventurous and BURSTING from the earth with discovery so aliens wouldn't think we were weak shit.

>“I see no wisdom in the eagerness to be found and approached by any intelligence with the ability to accomplish it from any sector of space. In the meetings between ‘discoverers’ and ‘discoverees,’ history has always given the advantage to the finders.”
>>

The New Gods are probably easily my favorite of Kirby's creations. God, I love them so much. I love their designs so much and what they stand for.

I may sound like a pleb, but I remember not really caring too much for Kirby's art at first. I was pretty indifferent to it. But the more I read some of his actual works, and saw how creative he could get, how trippy his stuff can be, and knowing that he was capable of working extremely fast and still producing extremely quality work, he became easily one of my favorite comic book artists ever. I like his writing a whole lot too. It's over the top, but there's a certain poetry to it.

It's not fair.
>>
At first, I didn't really see the appeal of Kirby. But looking back, he made an astounding amount of ideas, and the ones that were dumb were campy enough to fit right in regardless. I mean, OMAC? The Black Racer? MODOK?

I remember that one comic made a homage to him by portraying God as a Kirby Krackle in his likeness. That was cool.
>>
>>85845354
If it's any consolation, half of the Marvel cinematic universe is Kirby's handiwork.
>>
>>85845367
Yeah same. I thought he was kind of overrated. But the more I learned about Marvel and DC, and the more I realized just how much can be accredited to him, the more I realized just how much of a genius he was.

R.I.P. Jack Kirby. If there's anything like a God out there, he took you way too soon.

>>85845398
True. But I really want to see Kirby's style translated into live-action. I want to see live-action Kirby crackle ffs.

That's why I'm super nervous about Snyder using the New Gods in his JL movie. He's going to have a lot of influence right off the bat, unfortunately. I'm really worried that he's going to fuck up the designs and just make them monstrous-looking space angels or demons when that's missing the point of them. Or I'm worried about them using the nu52 versions and giving us Johnseid.

He was always pushing forward, his attitude was "what's next?" A lot of the runs he scripted like the Fourth World are filled with logical holes because he literally didn't look back, sometimes even to the beginning of the issue he was currently drawing. When the page / story was done it was done and it was pretty much impossible to get him to think about it again.

If he was still alive he'd still be drawing.

>Fucking hell a New Gods movie with the circuitry lines and grandiose architecture would be so cool
You're right. God, the more I think about it, the more I realize that an actually accurate adaptation of the New Gods would be the sickest shit. If they actually translated Kirby's art style on screen, it would be so amazing, trippy even. But Hollywood won't ever do it, because Hollywood is fucking retarded and doesn't respect the source material. Or WB, rather.

What's honestly even MORE rage-inducing is that you just know there'll be people on this very board defending them and saying the New Gods are ridiculous and that they could never be accurately translated on screen without looking stupid or that people will never take them serious. Why does this board have so many normies?

>>
>>85848284
Let's say I think about setting up this task for let's say, his 100th birthday. What exactly are we missing?
>>
Man, what I would give for a New Gods movie like this:

They already introduced Darkseid as references in the movies, so he's coming. But a New Gods movie should in my opinion span the whole timeframe from the death of the Old Gods (which we don't need to see) to right now. There should be key moments in millenia on display that feel like mythical moments, displaying the dual nature of Apocolyps and New Genesis. The Source should play a role as well as Metron zipping around between the two planets. This should be the rist 45 minutes to an hour.

Only then do we start with what's happening on Earth right now. We see scenes of horror, concentration camps underground etc.. Then we start with New Gods 1 and Tomorrow People. Mister Miracle could be there, too, but I think this should be a solo. This should be another hour. I'm not decided on a definitive endpoint.

The first hour is to show us what the frame of reference for these beings is. This will serve as a context for their alienness in our world, like gods "dumbing down", accustoming themselves to our time and space perception etc.. It should feel like every individual human is just a speck in the whole frame of the universe, and Apocolyps values us as such, while the New Gods nonetheless see value in every individual thing, because every little thing implicates the whole.
>>
>>85855380

I feel like I need to add to the first hour: The key mythical moments should be abstracted versions of general mythical moments in various Earth myths. Like Jungian archetypes. These moments should be able to be taken as metaphors for the genesis of human consciousness. In accumulation, these can either lead to absolute separation and hate or absolute fusion and love. Neither is good or bad, just the state of us.
>>
>>85855380
>tfw hellpits of Apokolips and spires of New Genesis in glory of 3D CGI
Miracle, Barda, Orion, Lightray, Bekka for New Genesis side. Apokolips better have lots of Kanto, though.

>>
>>85856789

>>
>>85855380
My idea was a New Gods duology.

I wanted to start with a Star Wars-esque usage of opening crawl to establish that the New Gods were born from the Old Gods, and from there, bring the action to the present day, with some scenes in the beginning set on New Genesis, to establish Orion, Highfather, Lightray, and so on, some set on Apokalips, and some set on Earth.

The movie could be a Tarantino-esque ensemble piece with several different plotlines running at once, perhaps even in a non-linear manner: it might follow Orion and Lightray, Mr. Miracle and Big Barda, and the Forever People as they deal with the hidden forces of Apokalips on Earth, such as Intergang, or even having some trouble brewing on Apokalips or New Genesis, across three separate plots that eventually converge on themselves in the second movie. It would largely be an adaptation of Kirby's actual Fourth World saga and eventually lead to the third JL movie, which could have Darkseid as the antagonist. Darkseid himself being painstakingly shown to be a fascistic ruler who goes to great lengths to maintain his horrific cult of personality on Apokalips, showing just how brutal his regime is and how fanatical his followers are despite this.

Though honestly, your idea sounds mostly better.
>>

Holy shit based anon. We're missing all of the Jack Kirby DC omnibuses. I'm sure there are more Kirby works in need of better quality, but his DC work is especially important. This includes:

Jack Kirby's The Demon, collects The Demon #1–16, 384 pages
Jack Kirby's Fourth World Omnibus vol.1-4, collects the entire Fourth World saga including Jimmy Olsen and Hunger Dogs, about 400 pages each
Jack Kirby Omnibus vol.1-2, collects a fuckton of random shit, but the most important thing is the Super Powers in vol2 (vol 1 is ~300 pages, vol2 is ~600)
Jack Kirby's O.M.A.C.: One Man Army Corps, collects O.M.A.C. #1–8, 200 pages
Kamandi by Jack Kirby vol. 102, collects Kamandi 1-40, about 450 pages each

There are alternative versions of a few of these, as well as some other things like the Losers, but these are the priority ones. If you could scan even just the Fourth World omnis I could die happy.
please don't hold off until next year. His 100th will be domnated by his Marvel work. Let his DC masterpieces have this one ;_;

Started reading the Forever People yesterday and I was kind of surprised by it, really wasn't what I was expecting at all. IDK, feels like Star Wars meets Easy Rider

Well, taking the opportunity of this thread.

There's no trace in the internet of a Foxhole comic made by Jack Kirby?
I really can't find it. The truth is that i'm looking for some no super hero works made by him and Foxhole draw my attention. This is in a collected edition or something?

Not a single post with the Fantastic Four in it. The thing that basically blew up his career. You guys are a fucking disgrace.

that's some revisionist bullshit by Kirby. This was during the Kirby lawsuit against Marvel/Stan Lee where he demanded full credit to the plot so he could get the same royalties Lee was getting. This is him at his bitter end.

Earlier interviews by him are very clear that wasn't the case. Look at the work in the 60s and then his awesome 70s new gods crap. Its obvious who's dialogue is who's.

Stan Lee has a very distinct dialogue, this is apparent as fuck in his other titles not collaborated by Lee, like the Ditko Spidey.

Kirby's art always reminds me of 3D images, in a way.

Great intro, or greatest intro?

Dude people constantly suck off the FF. It may be Kirby's most "important" work, but it's certainly not his best. None of his Marvel work can even compare to the pure imagination and energetic storytelling of his DC work and beyond. And Kirby was well known in the industry long before FF, pleb.

Maybe you should try to know what the fuck you're talking about before you try to lecture other anons dipshit

indeed. i always assumed it was the Norse Gods and Ragnarok that was depicting. Is there any accuracy in that?
>>
>>85884711
Had he not left Marvel this was to be the fate of Thor and all the gods. He was conceptualizing the 4th World Saga while at Marvel. Kirby: King of Comics and Marvel: The Untold Story talk a bit about it.
>>
Goddamn I have such mixed feelings on him. Sometimes his art looks fucking amazing and is on point with perspective and his thick outlines.

But then sometimes the stuff is way off kilter and just looks wonky. This is especially noticeable with hands and head shapes sometimes.

His aesthetics are perfection though, new gods are fucking amazing and kirby dots are top notch.

I wish they could at least use CGI to make kirby dots in the DCEU.

>The idea of the New Gods had come to Jack years earlier, when he was plotting 90 percent of the "Tales of Asgard" stories in Thor. He wanted to have two planets at war and end with Ragnarok, the battle that would kill Thor's lucrative pantheon. Instead, he tried the idea in his Inhumans stories. Now he was presenting it in its original context. Though he wouldn't ever say it publicly, the New Gods books started right after the gods in Thor killed one another. The first page of Orion of the New Gods showed the same scenes from Thor — a planet torn in half and armored gods holding swords and dying on a fiery battleground.[9]
