In reality, yes, capes make no sense at all.

Good ones are heavy, they create drag when running or flying, enemies can easily grab ahold of them, they can get tangled around you or stuck in something nearby such as a revolving door or jet engine.

Depends what kind of hero you are. Take Batman for example. He uses his as a tool to glide and protect himself. Most heros though capes seem pretty useless for.
