How come online streaming is wrecking tv stations in viewership, but online comics cant even begin to compete with the big two? Serious question, seemed like eight years ago webcomics were a bigger deal and now fucking nobody gives a shit about them.
>>
too many mediocre-to-bad comics from the 2000s became memes that convinced people webcomics aren't worth their time

also not helping is the fact that 'traditional' comic readers in america still prefer capeshit to the kind of stuff most webcomic producers put out

But you'd think there'd be something like the comic book equivalent of steam or Netflix out there that everyone used so they wouldn't have to buy physical books. I know cbr is a thing but that's not even really comparable to either of the things I mentioned, like, why isn't there just an online store where you can buy fucking everything from dc to marvel to dark horse and all the indie stuff? You'd think organizing it all in one place would male people flock to it to get their fix, and maybe even encourage new authors to post their content on there and get a cut of all the sales
It seems like such a blatantly obvious idea and yet it doesn't exist. It would probably cost absolute pennies to upkeep compared to stuff like steam, I mean it's just hosting images, not full programs.

Personally I stopped reading webcomics because every time I got interested in one, either the artist would abandon it or they would take so long to update that I'd just forget about it.

I think quite a few people make more money than major authors/artists. Stuff like SMBC probably have way more readers than any Big 2 comic in a given month.
>>
>>85656747

That was supposed to be "most" authors/artists. I think the big guys from the big 2 still make quite a bit.

Well, it's not as if you're wrong. You need to remember and understand that while 80k viewers for a webcomic might be pretty good numbers, it's a fucking blockbuster for print comics.

I think the big problem is that with TV/movies/music, you have a huge number of people who are already interested in the medium itself. So, you can accurately see trends as people move to and fro online ways of consuming those media. Conversely, comics occupy an insanely small readership in total. Like, even pirating doesn't account for *that* much of a readership loss because people just straight up don't read comics.

IMO, companies just need to bite the bullet and take temporary monetary losses in order to get big bucks with future larger readerships. Marvel Unlimited is a step in the right direction, although I always hear things about it not being a high quality reading (web)app -- certainly, I don't see it get advertised as much as it should be.

Companies need to go the Netflix way: provide a damn good service for cheap/free, market the hell out of it, and then figure out a way to get people to still pay money for it occasionally. I mean, shit, the manga market has found a way to make a buttload of money in America with only a handful of anime shows on CN and other places -- the real legwork is done by scanlators, subbers, etc.

I think DC is already seeing the potential with a better model with DCU Rebirth #1 -- big improvements on readership across the board by having this title be available relatively cheap (slightly more expensive in print now, but always dirt cheap online), and, much more importantly, marketing the FUCK out of it.

Still, on a pretty basic level, they need more readers of ALL kinds (including pirates/freeloaders). No one will care about your sales, your events, or relaunches if no one is around to spread the news via word-of-mouth.

Very, very true.
>>
When people stop making comics where social justice comes first and stories/characters come second maybe they'll emerge from the hole they're in.
>>
>online streaming
>massive market demand, healthy revenue streams, enough money in production to attract high level talent

>online comics
>low barrier of entry for production, enormous market saturation, literally no real reason for a consumer to invest unless you're that dedicated or commissioning porn

Hell, I can literally pull up my phone and buy the latest issue of Superman. Ain't no fucking webcomic worth $4 for 20-something pages.
>>
>>85656817

Is that an original vincent van feel?
>>
>>85656284
The hell kind of question is that? because people have no talent and webcomics suck.

Oh, you mean online streaming of stuff that's not pirated, like LetsPlays?
That probably has more to do with the variety provided. They can either pop endless little pieces of short videos as if they were popcorn kernels {it's low-calorie, so I can eat as much as I want! </overweight> Goddamned stimulus junkies.}, or let it go on and on with their friend simulators playing as background music.

>>85656628
Yup. Goddamned unprofessional. As horrible as capitalism is, it gets certain shit done. It may be soulless garbage, but it's on a deadline. They understand that retaining an audience requires reliability. Amusingly enough, actual comic books sometimes fail in this as well.
>>
>>85656284
Online streaming is a better version of TV stations. Webcomics are not a better version of comics in any significant way.
>>
>>85656662
It's fine anon. I still like your pretty smile.
>>
>>85656284
a lot of people that is in comics that is ready to spend money are collectors, digital have no appeal to them.
