I find it odd how I can accept vigilantes running around in violent fictionalized versions of safer places, but find it discomforting when they're placed In settings where the real life equivalent is no joke. For example I do joke about Frank running around in a New York that's stuck in the 70s -early 90s, but I don't think the element that made him popular in his heyday could be used to justify setting a story in chiraq. I get the kind of character The Punisher is, but the pretension asshole in me expects a bit more nuance when it comes to "real shit."

Original Constatine was a anti-Thatcher, punk-rebel, bisexual asshole. Those are less traits attributed to British nationality and more aspects of the character which became extremely popular and likely conflated with other punk/skinhead rebellious Brits like Sid Vicious.

There's nothing fundamentally stereotypical or "British" about Constatine save that's where the character is from. Compare to Grant Morrison writing Mirror Master in Animal Man, where he endeavored to give Mirror Master an authentic Scottish accent. That's an example of using a trait commonly ascribed to either a nationality and/or ethnicity, not Constatine.

That's what I was saying when I mentioned that those aspects became conflated with other punk icons, that's just one aspect of being British and he's never positioned as a "consummate Brit". Compare Constatine and James Bond, one is ultimately alternative (despite the fact that the display of counterculture has become by this point weak and stale), the other is somewhat of an icon for British superspies. Whereas there's something fundamentally British about both, only one is iconic whereas the other is pastiche.

Pastiche is not necessarily the same thing as being emblematic of a "nationality" (which in and out itself has a shit-ton of variations).
