Are the C. C. Beck, Jerry Ordway, and Geoff Johns versions of Captain Marvel the only good ones?
>>85599241
No, there's also Grant Morrison and even Judd fucking Winnick did good on First Thunder.
Jeff Smith's was great.
>>85599241
That's a extremely shitty Bait. Johns is pretty much a Earth One elseworld, i'm glad it's finally over
>>85599241
I liked convergence captian marvel
>>85599337
>Bait
It successfully integrates Cap into the modern DCU without going overboard on the grimdark. It's preferable to a rerun of pic related.
>>85599428
Don't worry, anon. The only people who hate nuShazam and think its too "edgy" or "grimdark" are retards who can't read subtext.
>>85599428
>It successfully integrates
Do you understand that Johns got rid of all the rules of magics, lord of chaos and order, Shazam, the gods, Most of billy's powers and supporting cast and the only thing we got were the diversity kids, an abo and a Movie friendly bait comic?
>>85599532
More like the fans of Captain Marvel
>>85599682
>his supporting cast
What the fuck are you on about m8? His supporting cast is clearly still there.
>Freddy Freeman is there
>Mary is there
>the wizard is there
>motherfucking talky tawny is there.
>>85599682
>rules of magic
>Lords of chaos and order
>gods
Curse of Shazam didn't get rid of any thise things though, Hell the lords of chaos and order were phased out by 2006
>>85599782
Didn't the Wizard die giving Billy his power in the New 52 or an I just not remembering it right?
>>85599682
>the diversity kids
Ah, now I understand where you're coming from.
Opinion dismissed.
>>85599853
He died giving Billy his powers in the old continuity, That's how it's always been.
>>85599826
Sure, but they existed.
>>85599782
>>the wizard is there
No he isnt, there's no Shazam anymore, only an abo that has nothing to do with european gods.
>>85599878
When? Isn't the only time before New 52 that he "died" giving him powers during Infinite Crisis? And only because Spectre killed Shazam/The Wizard?
>>85599682
>the diversity kids
>>85599917
>only an abo
Kaziklu, is that you?
>>85599943
No, he does it in several stories.
>>85599943
He dies and comesback anyway in pretty much every version.
>>85599858
It was a move that was pure moviebait. There's no merit in that shitty comic beyond the art, Johns got rid of all not movie friendly ideas and wrote a 90's children movie, diversity cast included.
>>85600074
>>85600075
Really? Huh. Alright. I'll take your word for it.
>>85599943
Different Anon, but in most versions of the story going back to C. C. Beck, Shazam dies immediately after passing on his powers to Billy—traditionally, by being crushed to death by a huge hunk of rock suspended over the wizard's throne (no, really).
>>85600113
Why even have that?
>>85600137
Was it like a sword of damocles deal?
>>85600157
I guess he just knew but still willingly being crushed to death seems a tad eccentric.
>>85600157
Huh. That reads more like he gave up his physical form to give Billy powers rather than him "dying" but I get ya.
>>85599241
I prefer P.A.D.'s version best.
>>85600137
>>85600157
Yeah, i love how he is back in the next panel
>>85600075
>a 90's children movie
And it was a perfect fit for Shazam.
>>85600137
>>85600157
>>85600185
You can see why it's not included in some modern retellings.
>>85600210
>well time to get crushed to death
>SPLAT
>now that's done let me tell you what you gotta do
>>85599682
>all the rules of magics, lord of chaos and order
this changed in general across al nu52 dc there is no reason to give Billy a special tratment since that would contradict with the rest of the universe.
>Shazam, the gods,
the changed his name but the wizard still plays an important role in Billy's origin, as for the gods to be fair they weren't erased as much as completely omited of Curse of Shazam but the Darkseid war tie in brought gods back into Billy's power set.
>Most of billy's powers
He has always been a magic flying brick, nuBilly is basically the same, only that he now has more in common with actual wizards and magic users of DC rather than just being the magic version of superman.
>supporting cast and the only thing we got were the diversity kids
the important ones like Freddy and Mary are still there, so does Thawny, and the thunderkids are no less silly or weird in concept as the original Lieutenant Marvels from the golden age.
>>85600075
>a 90's children movie
And Ordway's Power of Shazam reads exactly like reading a comic-book adaptation of an 80s children's adventure movie. What's your point?
>>85600217
Shazam is an old man, he doesnt sound like a good protagonist for a kid's movie
>>85600257
>this changed in general across al nu52
Yeah, and the guy that is to blame is JOHNS. Magic had been building it's own micro universe and thanks to gaiman was already perfect.
>>85600195
>P.A.D.'s version
>>85600257
>the changed his name
It went from a Merlyn archtype from the middle east-Europe that Ruled that could grant powers from different gods to a Magic negro that isnt even a real negro
>>85600308
Didn't P.A.D. have Mary almost being molested in a issue.
>>85600113
pre reboot DC had Shazam stay alive but with the ominous rock still in place, since according to the wizard it was part of his destiny.
The rock played its role during the Day of Vengeance event when the Spectre goes nuts and starts killing magic users, the wizard manages to get to a stalemate against the Spectre but in the end he is overpowered and pretty much all the ceiling of the rock of eternity falls on his head.
>>85600257
>and the thunderkids are no less silly
That's not the reason why they are bad, they are pure diversity tokenism, the entire story is nothing more that a shameless Script for a movie, from the hands of Former CCO Geoff Johns, and now consultant, producer, president of DC and Screen writer geoff Johns.
>>85600367
Shazam was extremely high on power since he was introduced back in 74, magic got really nerfed
>>85600373
while diversity for the sake of diversity is bad, i thought they fit well in the story and it makes sense that a family of orphans have kids of different origins and places.
Also i liked the detail that each of them was implied to get one especial characteristic over eachother once they got their powers, like how Darla got the speed of mercury or the Mexican kid got more strength and a look more atkin to Hercules.
>>85599297
Yep. Smith's take was wholesome.
>>85600373
They're diverse for a reason though and that reason is clearly spelled out in the book.
>>85600366
Sort of.
They had an issue that basically played up that we can never really know what really happened in a situation.
A cop sees Mary (who ran away from home for the story) and apparently thinks she stole something and pats her down.
The issue then plays up that either Mary or the cop had a legitimate reason to go too far in what they "did/thought"
Mary thinking the cop groped her or otherwise touched her inappropriately because she was still riled from an argument with Billy and begins accusing him of it.
The cop I believe was having marital issues and may have gone too far/rough with Mary trying to ascertain if she stole stuff. But as we never see the event it's completely likely he didn't do anything "wrong" and Mary over reacted.
Enter Linda who has to try balancing these two conflicting views as neither believes they're in the wrong.
The story sort of ends with the cop possibly admitting to himself he went too far in said situation as an "out" for Mary to not be the wrong one but otherwise left in the air.
>>85599241
Given how he wrote Superman, I bet Ennis could actually do him good, if he ever tried.
>>85600373
>they are pure diversity tokenism
Disagree, but at this point I'm just waiting for you to break out the word "pandering".
>the entire story is nothing more that a shameless Script for a movie
Again: >>85600261
>>85600488
Mark Millar too for what i read of him in Superior
>>85599297
>>85600438
It was drippingly sentimental and nostalgic, where the original was consciously goofy and off-the-wall.
>>85600344
and the original Wizard was a jew shepard called Jebediah of Canaan before he became a champion, what is your point?
>>85600421
>Also i liked the detail that each of them was implied to get one especial characteristic over eachother once they got their powers, like how Darla got the speed of mercury or the Mexican kid got more strength and a look more atkin to Hercules.
I thought that was a great touch.
>>85600628
Different Anon, but the original wizard from Fawcett Comics was just plain Shazam. The Jebediah of Canaan thing was a DC innovation, I believe.
>>85600698
Mentioning DC innovations . . .
>This is as close as we will ever get to digital remasters of the Fawcett years.
>>85600628
>and the original Wizard was a jew shepard called Jebediah of Canaan
canaan is in the middle east, also, he wasnt a jew, he was either an hebrew or zarathustran, but not a jew.
>>85600828
>He was Hebrew, not Jewish!
lolwhut
>>85599241
Goeff Johns and anybody at DC have only ever written Shazam since the 1970s when DC abandoned any claim it had attempted to make to the name Captain Marvel.
If you see the name "Captain Marvel" used to refer to Shazam, this is a printing error.
>>85599682
>More like the fans of Captain Marvel
Captain Marvel died in 1953 with Superman's hands around his throat. The only Captain Marvel now is published by Marvel Comics.
>>85601231
Hebrews and Jews are not the same thing.
Specially not modern jews and ancient hebrews
how long/how is that ordway shazam 90s series?
>>85601275
Captain Marvel written by Denny O'Neil and drawn by C. C. Beck doesn't count because DC?

Kingfags
The unholy trinity.
