From /v/ here.

I saw there was a GI Joe crossover with Street Fighter and it piqued my interest on military/espionage comics.

1. Where do I start with GI Joe?
2. Any other good stuff? Preferably politically intelligent and well-written. Neither Tom Clancy nor "war is hell and right-wingers are racists".

Anyone?

There's two good points to start with GI Joe:
1) The classic Marvel stuff by Larry Hama. It's very 80s and not terribly realistic, but it's inmensely enjoyable, surprisingly smart and makes you fall in love with the characters like nobody's business. Great stuff if you can handle the cheese.
2) IDW's latest relaunch. More gritty and believable than Marvel's run, but a bit cold by comparison. Anything by Mike Costa (two volumes of Cobra, then Cobra Files) is absolute gold, though.

As far as other good military or espionage stuff, you got:
- Anything by Garth Ennis, especially Unknown Soldier and Fury MAX: My War Gone By. Battlefields and War Story are also good for straightforward war tales.
- Joshua Dysart's Unknown Soldier series is also a good choice. Ruthlessly gritty depiction of guerrilla warfare mixed with history lessons about Uganda and espionage-based psychological horror. Grand stuff, unfortunately short.
- The 'Nam, an 80s Marvel series that can best be defined as "slice of life in the Vietnam war", written and edited by actual veterans.

GI Joe vs Transformers is a whole new level of insane, not sure if it's what you're looking for though.

>Where do I start with GI Joe?

The old Marvel series. The whole thing. In order. Plus the Special Missions spin-off. And the Yearbooks.

The IDW reboot is less entertaining, plus it turns to SHIT with the third volume.

>Any other good stuff? Preferably politically intelligent and well-written. Neither Tom Clancy nor "war is hell and right-wingers are racists".

Avoid anything by Garth Ennis if you don't want "war is hell". Maybe try out The 'Nam, or at least the first few years of it.

GI Joe Special Missions if you want more real world stories

Fantastic as that was,
I feel it's one of those comics you recommend to people once they're familiar with one or the other.

This is a thing that happens in Larry Hama's G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero comics. They are amazing.

the best place to start is at the beginning, with Larry Hama's original run on G.I. Joe - A Real American Hero at Marvel. it's 155 issues. and don't overlook the companion series 'Special Missions', which was 24 issues i think. it overlaps with RAH in places. both were written by Hama (except for a handful of issues of SM).

then, after IDW took over the G.I. Joe license, they got Hama back to continue the RAH series at issue #155 1/2. it's at issue 230 right now and still ongoing. with G.I. Joe, everything Hama is gold, and everything else is spotty.

if you're serious about reading it, i suggest the IDW 'Classic G.I. Joe' trade paperbacks, which collects every issue of RAH (including the Marvel issues), and they also have trades of Special Missions.

OP here. Thank you for the recommendations.

I wonder if that could be printed today.

Another question. For a fun read, how is Danger Girl? Is it decent or just fan service?

Hama's run is ending. It will replaced by a new ongoing after the Revolution event.

Poorly written.
