>purposefully sets in motion the chain of events needed to justify his extreme actions

Is he the dumbest smartest man in comics?
>>

IIRC Watchmen's world was fucked up because Manhattan existing allowed for technology to advance to a much faster rate which wasn't followed by the same social and cultural development that was needed to avert such a situation of conflict
>>
>>85439637
Sure it was, faggot.

America refused to either relieve tensions with the USSR and refused to build up an alternative to Dr. M as a deterrent. Veidt correctly assumed that when Dr. M ultimately and invariably left, America would resort to a preemptive strike. Veidt wasn't right, but he wasn't wrong.
>>
>>85439788
Not even close

>Is he the most *psychotic smartest man in comics?
FTFY, and yes. I think the point some readers miss is Watchmen isn't so much a matter of who was right or wrong but that the people trying to do right are not very well.

Adrian was clearly very gifted but also very unstable. From my interpretation of things he seems to have psychologically broke at the realization there are problems he could not simply Gordian Knot.

Dr. M was only capable of taking down a certain percentage of Soviet missiles.

If the USA had enough weapons to launch a preemptive strike it had enough weapons for second-strike capability.

His plan didn't end with the squid. It was just a part of it. At the same time a delicate and brutal affair.
He meant to improve humanity from the sidelines. His success or failure with that is irrelevant because it still doesn't justify the sacrifice, because nothing will ever justify that.

The fundamental failure of Ozymandias is thinking that patterns can be completely destroyed to create something new. He was terrified of the past being wiped out without a trace. Ironicaly, that's what he intended to do with his sin.
But not even the god-like Osterman, who was literally erased from the world, could escape his own past. When he put himself together, it was a human shape he ended up with.
>>
>>85439990
This is wrong his plan began and ended with the squid. If you look at the first issue you see the plans for the squid on the desk.
>>
>>85439554
His company sells the image of him as this ubermensch and he bought into his own myth

He's smart, but he's not nearly as smart as he thinks he is

>doesn't know about deterrence

He did, though. He just didn't believe in deterrence from either side, so instead he fabricated a fashion of deterrence coming from an assumed third party. The plan makes some sense, as long as the truth doesn't come out. That's the brilliance of it.
>>
>>85440034
That anon probably means the sociopolitical engineering Veidt was doing through his businesses were his main focus but the squid was the catalyst to thwart the plans of the rest of the world by placing them in a state of confusion and chaos.
>>
Adrian is the arguably the most messed up character in the book

>Adrian’s far madder than Rorschach, more inhuman than Jon, more pathetic than Dan…his life more damagingly composed of lies than Laurie’s. Of course it’s just this that causes the Comedian’s sense of humour to shatter, in the end — a fucking space squid!?
>>
>>85440126
Probably not. Don't forget what Rorschach found.
>>
>>85439554
>assuming deterrence works

USSR doesn't want America irradiated, it wants America destroyed - not the same thing. People and land are useful, radioactive wastelands are not. Likewise America - doesn't want USSR destroyed, wants it to, er, go full free market and... y'know, fuck itself.

Deterrence isn't deterrence against a nuclear strike, it's a boondoggle that makes your own people feel secure when the idiots are trying to scare them, because mass panic will fuck you every time. The enemy troops rolling over your land is the threat.

Most of the rhetoric surrounding nuclear weapons throughout the cold war didn't really speak of deterrence - it was about first-strike capability, about revenge in the event of "those fuckers" taking "our shit". Nukes as prelude to invasion, tantrum, or a means of ensuring that there cannot possibly be anything human living afterwards, which is pretty much a condemnation of any politician who also spoke of people building themselves up from nothing since, as an automatic adjunct to that, if your way of life is right then eventually people are going to come around to it.

Pure brinkmanship for the sake of political careers. The idea that the USSR/China had nukes never stopped a dozen major proxy wars being fought, right up until the 1980s. Everybody knew who was backing each side; in some cases, it was explicit support. Yet no nukes, because they're not for that; they don't deter and they aren't used in retaliation.

Yeah, that's what I meant.
Veidt knows he's going to fix everything, so he's already planning for the future. As seen in...
>>
>>85439554
One of the hallmarks of intelligent characters in fiction is the self-awareness of their intelligence, leading them to believe all those lower them have nothing to contribute to their plans, or are able recognize its flaws. Ironically, this unjustified impression leads to their downfall.

They presume their intelligence leads to the notion that their schemes have no margin of error, or are without faults. So, with certainty, it is possible to encounter people who are classified as intelligent, but just as prone to bias, partiality, or simple hubris that blinds their clear judgement, the same as any other person.

It is hilarious reading Rationalwiki articles subscribing to the Historical Jesus Myth, referencing sources from a piano instructor without historical credentials or formal education concerning ancient history. These people are convinced they are correct about complex matters such as gun control, globalism or immigration. It blinds them to even consider the worldview of the opposition as valid, let alone constructive.

I have seen far too many people more intelligent than me adhere to practices or beliefs that are just flat out wrong.

Was the Veidt method actually intended to work, or was it just a way to get cash from suckers?
>>
>>85441301
An anon a few months ago in an analysis storytime series of threads hypothesized that it likely was meant to give physical and psychological capabilities, however it along with the media and propoganda Veidt Enterprises dished out was psychologically and psionically conditioning people so they'd be more receptive to the sight and psionic shockwave of the Squid. Double edged sword basically.
>>
>>85441301
Yes and yes. Veidt believed in it, but the method was complete bullshit.
>>
>>85439554
Can somebody explain me the watchmen ending, specially why the mutant monster octopus is so important to it?
>>
What I don't understand is why he felt the need to kill his vietnamese servants. They were clearly the kind of loyal that will die for you, they wouldn't have blabbed on his plan.
>>
>>85441682
The mutant monster octopus being used instead of Doctor Manhattan is important because the "alien" is a purely external threat - it can't be pinned on the US or the USSR, which means it works to unite them together. Manhattan, conversely, is... well, "God exists, and he is American".
>>
>>85440058
It was more of just an assertion.
