The crewniverse has made it explicitly clear that Jasper x Lapis is "the worst relationship imaginable". They're depicted as extremely fucked up and abusive to the point that being fused with Lapis has destroyed Jasper's understanding of fusion and how it should be a choice, not a stronger gem forcing the other bending to their will in an "it'll be all right once you stop struggling" type of way.

Jasper x Lapis displays dysfunction, pain, and mental health -damaging abuse as well as the abuser being traumatised by coming to grips with liking abusing someone. Having that shit end up in a "happy" relationship with the message of "just say you're sorry and forgive the abuser, that'll fix everything" would be fucked up beyond measure.

It's one thing to have a message of understanding and forgiveness, but some relationship dynamics are fundamentally so messed up from all the shit baggage they can never be healthy again, and Lapis x Jasper is a prime example of that. They can forgive, move on, heal - they can even be civil to one another, but any sort of romantic relationship is absolutely not cool in a kid's show

Question. Outside of /sug/ it seems like /co/ really hates Steven Universe as a show, citing it as being overrated and having bad writing. I see lots of threads complaining about it and people saying "yeah it's garbage I dropped it after x episode". I don't know if that's because of 4ch's demographics (straight male, 20s, etc) and expectations but as a teen bi girl I really like SU, unironically, and desu I am the type of person to use tumblr (I'm too lazy to set one up). I'm smack dab right in this target demographics and I genuinely love SU. I know it has flaws but I hate seeing /co/ shit on it or call it overrated. I really like this show

The biggest flaw it has, is that it leaves plotlines (Malachite, now Jasper etc) behind for 50 episodes, in order to make room for townie episodes. I like the townie episodes, but I think a lot of people would like them better if they just revolve the main issues first.

The thing is that irl people in abusive, dysfunctional relationships really WILL often "miss" the other person, which is why so many abused people can't leave the relationship. One gets used to the dysfunction, it becomes familiar. The show got that right, it's a good thing to point out - that sometimes you miss and think you need things that are really fucking bad for you. But they can't be brought back together without it sending a really terrible, unhealthy, dangerous message. They just can't.

Ratings actually show that SU is more popular with men than women, funnily enough. It's also in the very nature of 4chan to criticize, so don't take everything 100% seriously.

I personally adore the characters, and I like that the show has some actual continuity and a developed universe to play around in. Even if they reveal things slowly, it's always interesting to see why they go with them. I even like the townie episodes for what they are, the character interactions are actually pretty dynamic and fun to watch.

Anon dear, the tumblr approach in this would be to justify everything Lapis does with "she's a survivor, she's got trauma, and also Jasper grabbed her without consent".

I know people who've actually been in abusive relationships, as in threatening to decapitate you with a shovel tier abusive, and I recognise what SU is trying to do with the whole Malachite scenario. It's pretty admirable that they're tackling such a heavy topic in such a way, they're really trying to send over a big, important message. But the way they've approached fusion as a whole and especially the Malachite thing, I really don't think they'll go for "hurr love and forgiveness makes even abusive dynamics suddenly okay". It's because they've approached the Malachite situation so seriously and carefully, they've clearly thought about it a lot - so they've also had to think about how fucked up it would be to show them getting romantically involved again and presenting that as healthy.

It's Steven Universe, so love and forgiveness will prevail, but like I've said I think in the case of Jasper x Lapis it'll be limited into recognising how fucked up they were together, forgiving each other and keeping a slight distance while moving on.
