I like how the story is a mystery but they give away the mystery IN THE TITLE OF THE STORY.

(I do think it was necessary to get clear out some of the "classic" Avenger characters who had been in the book too long. But they deserved a better send-off.)

IIRC it was what Marvel would have been expecting, outrage from people who had been reading Avengers since the Busiek reboot, interest from people who had had no interest in the Avengers up to that point.

The other thing I recall is that there was much more outrage about Hawkeye, outrage over Scarlet Witch developed later (maybe after House of M made it clear she wasn't coming back any time soon).

Supposedly he wanted to kill off Scott Lang in Alias and was told he couldn't because Geoff Johns was using Lang heavily in Avengers.

Having Jack of Hearts (an obscure character heavily used by Busiek and Johns) come back to kill Lang was sort of a way of saying at the beginning that the obscure characters were going to be gone.

I think these colors fit Finch's art style better than the ones on his current stuff. They don't for all or even most artists but they do for Finch.

Fun fact: almost everyone who read this thinks Wanda killed Agatha Harkness (that's even a plot point in Wanda's ongoing) but Brevoort and Bendis have said it was supposed to show that Agatha Harkness had been dead all along and all her other appearances were Wanda's hallucinations.

I don't know if it's worth storytiming but Jeff Parker wrote a What If about this story that tried to explain away all the continuity gaffes and even suggest that the What If was actually the "real" story of what was going on.

It was the first backlash against Bendis, but it didn't stick because he made New Avengers a top seller. It did have its defenders though.

There were some parts of New Avengers that were a little better than I expect, but on the whole the entire run does not hold up well at all and Disassembled is still as terrible as ever in spite of the deaths or changes not sticking.

Wanda's powers have been referred to as "Chaos Magic" by several other writers including, hilariously, Bendis himself. (There's an issue of New Avengers where Strange describes her powers as "chaos magic" because Bendis can't remember his own dialogue.)

However James Robinson's Scarlet Witch ongoing starts by saying "chaos magic" is a misnomer.

I don't honestly think most writers like the description of her powers, only Busiek seemed to like it.
