"An urban legend arcade game / Gives the methods correct name / Mathematically the letters hide / In branches & knots, no matter the side"

http://www.braingle.com/brainteasers/codes/polybius.php
Which means we have to decode something with the Polybius Square Cipher, this is going to be a long race.

Anons from Oregon, stay glued to the screen, the clue may be solved any second now.

REMEMBER:
>ONLY THE FIRST AND LAST CLUE MATTER
>JOURNAL 3 IS IRRELEVANT
>"RETURN TO WHERE IT ALL BEGAN" REFERS TO THE FIRST CLUE ONLY
>DON'T FORGET TO WATERMARK YOUR FINDINGS

CURRENT CLUE:
"Return to where it all began / The final piece is in your hands / The parchment can be such a tease / The answer's written in the trees"

IMAGE OF THE FIRST CLUE + MAP (full res):

POSSIBLE LOCATIONS, CLUES, RECAPS AND STREAMS HERE:

The statue may be in either California or Oregon. So take a trip, find it.

Well the arcade game is obviously Polybius, right?

I don't know how that connects though.

Polybius the game, first appeared in Portland, OR in 1981. According to the urban myth.

Not sure if that means anything, just wanna put that out there. Just in case.

http://pastebin.com/bBzQszFN
>>
Alright i have an idea but it probably needs some working out

See http://pastebin.com/bBzQszFN for all the differents reslts you get after using the polybus cipher.

Each answer has 11 letters,

The initial clue said "The answer is in your hands"

>In your hands

This also has 11 letters and might be a keyphrase or something.

Sorry, can I get some clarification:

1. We think he used a 5X5 square, right?

2. Which letters were skipped?

3. Is there a keyword?
>>
>>85085827
What if bill counts? An arm as a branch and an eye as a knot?
>>
I think the keyword must be Pines, or has that been disproven yet?
>>
>>85085915
how would we know
>>
>>85085915
5x5 excludes numbers. Since the letters are hidden "mathematically", it's probably 5x5?

In French, it's w. In English, it's I or J.

If there is, it's probably PINES.
>>
I think it's 5 by 5 with F and G merged onto the same square, but I'm as lost as everyone else here.
>>
>>85085915

He probably used the basic 5x5 square and skipped J, which is the traditional thing to do

My guess is PINES for the keyword.

If anyone would like to quick-and-dirty try stuff on their own, open Notepad, paste this:

And then ctrl-h to replace.

BU for Branch up
BD for Branch down,
NU for Needles up,
ND for Needles down,
KN for Knot.

You can plug it into >>85085795's link:

Either fill in the squares with the alphabet (omitting 'j', inserting your favorite keyword, or whatever), or try to have it auto-decode if you'd like. The choice is yours, but explore the options.

Sigh it's the Polybius Code.

Numbers are from counting the tree branches and knots. Which side they are on is not important.

Probably 5X5 polybius square used.

We're guessing J or I skipped as per usual but we don't know.

We don't know if there's a Polybius keyword. If there is we guessed Pines or Hands.

From what I've seen if the key does have two of the same letter you just ignore the second instance in the word. But it seems unlikely that it would be the case here since it would just overcomplicate things and Alex has already done more than enough of that.

Not sure if this helps, but if you use a 5x5 grid numbered 0-4, and you count branches as row and knots as column, your only possible letters are for no knots (AFLQV) or one knot (BGMRW). If we are limited to those, maybe we can work backwards to find better combinations of letters that will match a location.

Basing off this CodeAnon's script, change line 7 to reflect how you would like to take the trees into account. Take the commenting away from lines #9, #22, and #23 and change the word in line 9 to use a key word of your choosing. REMEMBER TO COMMENT THE LINES BACK OUT (using two forward slashes, "//", at the start of the line) IF YOU WISH TO STOP USING A KEY IN YOUR SOLUTION.

Line 7 sequence to solve based on:

>Top to bottom, left to right:
4123232004024301004301

>Bottom to top, right to left:
1034001034204002323214

Yeah, but like I said. Very rough. Just found a javascript version of the code through google and threw it together to work with what I already have.

You put your 25 character alphabet in what was the vigenere key slot, it will encode/decode based on that. If you want to make it numbers, you can do A1Z26. You could also do it backwards from numbers to text but you have to have single digit numbers only.

There's no way to accomplish that. One number has to be used for the rows, and one number has to be used for the column. If you're trying to get two numbers out of each tree you're looking at being trapped in a 2x2 grid in the upper left-hand corner, with letters A,B, F, and G (the highest amount of features one tree has is 3 items).
>>
>>85088384

Not CodeAnon here, but the Anon that messed with the script. By default it runs through the first permutation (top to bottom, left to right) for all 120 possible solutions - that is, a translation of all the letters for each set of all 120 permutations of value assigned to each feature (up branches = 1,2,3,4,5, down branches = 1,2,3,4,5, up needle branches = 1,2,3,4,5, down needle branches = 1,2,3,4,5, and knots = 1,2,3,4,5). I just finished the series. I have to say, one of the better, if not best, cartoons ive seen in a while.
What makes a movie or cartoon or really any form of media stand out for me is if it makes me feel like the characters are complex enough to be human beings
Gravity falls had that in spades.

The last time i felt this strongly for a series was when i watched cowboy bebop

The last time i wanted a "after the finale" story line this bad was Kill la Kill
I really wanted to see how that school year turned out for the kids, but i understand why they would never clear the project. It would be interesting for fans of the show, but probably wouldnt do well with new audiences

You first.

He's using a substitution cipher to get "KIRKS PARK". It doesn't fit into where he was "Trying to get grid locations and convert using a polybius", which is why he gave back-solving it a go in the first place. There's nothing to look into. Back-solving and decryption are not the same things in this case. No matter how hard you want it to be true, he was dealing with two separate things.

If the correct Polybius Code turns out to be an anagram or ANOTHER cipher we are so fucked, how do we know? We don't even know the skipped letters for sure or keyword for sure.

Also STOP USING ANYTHING BUT 5X5 that's the only thing this hint seems to actually confirm about the exact nature of the Polybius encryption used! We also know it's branches and knots, sides don't matter!
>>
>>85090533
This.
We all just need to think of ways the branches and knots can be arranged numerically then try it out in polybius.
After that just try putting it through some deciphered and anagrams
If that does not work move on to the next idea.

All I was to move that whole 120 permuations polybius solver code into a function so that it can be called with any string you like. I gave 4 examples:
solve("4123232004024301004301");
solve("1034001034204002323214");
solve("0123100230204003443401");
solve("1043443004020320013210");
>>
>>85090624
I'm probably missing something, but why did you rename a to str instead of defining solve as "void solve(std::string str)"? Also, could you post this somewhere that supports indentation? This makes no sense to me without tabs.

This pastebin is using the table with W removed (this was how the Polybuis python package came)

this one is a J/I table (I removed iirc, what is used in the wiki explaination of polybius)
http://pastebin.com/cjynMdKH
PythCodeAnon
Again, this goes through all 120 permutations of assigning 1,2,3,4,5 to up, down, up with leaf, down with leaf, knot, for the branch sequence we had.

I tried putting these results (using table without W, I, J) through vignere cipher with PINES, MASON, HANDS
I also tried reversing the order of the branch sequence, and reversing the resulting polybius string (Because Bill is pointing to the left).

All garbage. But I can keep trying stuff with suggestions. But I'm at work so I need some basis for your idea/key before I try because time/effort.

Other than that the c++ code looks like it's doing similar stuff. Keep trying everyone!!

I don’t understand, you get 120 possible words for the string you enter (each one for one permutations of 0, 1, 2, 3, 4). You have to look for something that looks like something intelligible. Computer is not really good at these things yet, and, what’s more, we don’t even know what we are looking for as an aswer.
>>
PythCodeAnon again
I didnt realise it would be so easy to share the code since I had some dependencies and stuff.

Probably very similar to the C++ one I haven't looked at it yet desu.
Change the cipher key on line 36 of main.py
Change the missing letter for the table on line 81 of polybius.py
To change the branch sequence use line 15 (use D, DB, U, UB, K)
To reverse the input of the branch sequence uncomment line 17

I've got to get back to work soon but I will try more things myself when I get home :)

That's the reason polybius cipher wasn't done like this before even though it was a possibility. We have no idea what we're looking for, so yes, we're just looking for anything that's not gibberish.
>>
Brainstorm request. How can 'knots' be boiled down to 1 - 5 segments? There can only be one knot per tree. Could it be position? Or what other ways could knots be broken down into 5 groups?
>>
>>85091446
Well, not really, we are bruteforcing possible digits assigned to different kinds of branches/knots, but we need to find the traversal of the branches and knots manually, because there are too many possibilities.
>>
>>85091497
oh damn that's the author of the polybuis package didn't see.

Maybe it's not what they are, but rather their position. Like, if we divide the image into 5 equal segments and count the number of branches/knots in each segment?

Okay autists, if you want to take a break first but this is what we must do.
Take these numbers and put them into polybius in whatever combinations we can think of. If we don't get anything we will probably need to decipher gibberish.
>>
>>85091741

I'm thinking there are 9 pairs and that they will be number of branches and some aspect about the knots. Since the knots are binary, that doesn't really work for the polybius or however you spell it. It needs to be divided into 5 segments somehow. And even then, we're looking at a number of spaces set as they don't have knots. We should be able to brute force without the knot aspect by looking at number of branches on horizontal and vertical of the polybius.

Next post with possibilities.

Assuming that a lack of knots = 1 and discluding knot trees; assuming that tree branches is part of the pair, this is one of two possibilities (second one next post). This is assuming A - Z with J skipped and shows the full possibility if we start with any letter but still go in order). "." = tree with knot.

The area of interest I was searching was Multnomah Falls, I tried the cypher forward and backwards several times before i got "mult" being from portland I immediately thought of the falls, the river leading from the falls mirrors the dotted line at a 90 degree clockwise angle. Where Bill would be was abut 50-100 meters off a main road near a trail. I searched for about an hour before I gave up. If other anons want to check the area I will post a map but I believe I was mistaken. So, the guy who got the polybius part right, was it because of a clue or just "hey, a cipher connected to videogames, I bet Alex wants to use that"?
>>
>>85095100
He posted that the 5 different types of branches and knots gave him the idea
>>
I don't think those make sense.

The answer will be in letters. It will be derived from a polybius. A polybius needs a pair of numbers, 1 - 5.

The pair of numbers will reference a) branches and b) knots. It is likely that we'll have one pair derivation for each tree.

Branches could be straightforward: number of branches on each tree. it ranges from 1 - 3; eliminating 4 and 5.

Knots is less straight forward. The existence of knots is binary; 1 or 0. Another aspect might need to be considered.

Furthermore, the ordering of the pair (insofar as whether as aspect is a row or column) impacts the answer as well. This is the current situation.

The aspects of the clue that are still up in the air are...

- Where 'branches' and 'knots' are placed in the pair system
- How 'branches' and 'knots' are converted into a 5-segment system (i.e. 1 - 5)

I've been brute forcing different ideas (I've tried over 7000 possibilities so far) but I haven't gotten any discernible word so far.
>>
>>85094950
>45.577767, -122.113068
yeah, you know everything else was so close, i mean that would be the perfect place for the statue to be, somewhat out of the way, not many tourists, near a trail and main road, its a "falls" the cipher almost matched up. I was close but im guessing i was wrong
>>
ATTENTION:
What I did was give every type of branch and the knots a number value 1-5. then put that through the cipher with different keys until something good came up, maybe you might want to try that, im retiring for a day

Following: for branches, I created a system based on branches relative to knots.

1: No knot
2: knot with branch above
3: knot with branch below
4: knot with branch above and below
5: knot with no branches

I set up a system to try out the above with different assignments of number (i.e. no knot as 1, no knot as 2, etc...). There are 120 possibilities of assignment.

As for branches, I see two possibilities that I tried: # of branches, excluding pine bunches, and # of branches including pine bunches. Giving
2 2 1 2 3 2 3 1 3 or 3 4 2 2 4 2 4 1 3.

I'm assuming a basic polybius with J/I occupying the same square and the square itself being 5 by 5.

PythCodeAnon, can someone double check something for me? I saw some speculation on reddit that the answer might be REEDSPORT,OR based on the repetitive pattern of the letters. They couldnt get it to fit the cipher though.

If we use the code
UP with leaf =1
Down with leaf = 2
Up = 3
Down = 4
Knot = 5

And use the polybius table without Q
I think it actually comes out to REEDSPORT,OR
Unless I screwed it up somewhere
