Neo Kosmos is pretty poor, regardless of whether you think it has an agenda or not.

It borrows Homestuck's format without understanding how or why it worked, it borrows Steven Universe character designs while removing the elements that make them work (the ginger is just Pearl without her conical elements, which are central to her look), and the writing is lackluster and has difficulty with aspects like introducing conflict. Also, the pacing is shit.

When will people learn that no-one wants to talk about this comic?

The characters in Homestuck are all very distinct from each other in ways that actually matter apart from gender and w/e, too, partially due to their distinguishing traits (everyone has a color, a weapon type, etc.) but also stronger characterization.

Vitiligo is the new heterochromia. It's something people put on their character designs to make them "Special" and "Unique" while pretending to make it about diversity.

Vitiligo is an unfortunate medical condition. It is *NOT* something you can slap on your OC to make them stand out.

And it doesn't even work for that, because everybody's doing it now. People have been making their characters albinos for 20 years now, but do they ever represent them the way actual albinos look? No, they don't!

If you designed a character with vitiligo 10 or 20 years ago, I'd respect you for doing something different. If you do it now, I assume you're just a trend-follower, until proven otherwise.

This is by far the comic's biggest flaw.

The characters are so vaguely defined that it's hard to care about their struggles. It's so obsessed with putting these characters into edgy and traumatic scenarios that it forgets to make the characters actually interesting.

SU and Homestuck are works that, by far, ride more on the strength of their cast more than anything else. That's why Undertale works so well in the wake of Homestuck's demise, and why this sack of shit falls so hard.

Yeah I hate how this faux-Steven Universe style doesn't even emulate any of it's aesthetics well. None of the characters in NeoKosmos have well defind or unique head/body shapes, they're all just round squishy blobs.

Look at those 3 in OPs image. Their heads are just ovals, no definition or structure at all. They don't even have fucking chins, and they're drawn like that in every panel which leads me to believe the author cannot comprehend real anatomy without resorting to playdough limbs.

The premise reminded me a lot of Oliva Butler's Lilith books, which are definitely worth checking out. Neokosmos isn't a one-to-one match of those books, but the opening scenes are somewhat similar. I wonder if Shelby read them.

As a newcomer to this webcomic (who never read Homestuck), I'd say that its "discussion" about gender doesn't necessarily invalidate its concept. Said discussion comes up at least once, but I'm not entirely sure how much of a statement the comic can make on the issue when it's devoted to the sci-fi plot.

The one thing I sort of don't like is the format, which is why I could never get into Homestuck in the first place. It just don't jive.

Yeah, it's very easy for controversies to arise in tumblr for things that aren't meant to be taken so badly. This already happened thrice with Ava's Demon and two of those times was regarding Odin. Makes sense that she will try to start playing safe now.

The author saying that there were no asexual characters after a certain character was called a virgin as an insult caused some controversy in the fandom, which ended up in the author deleting her tumblr blog after heaps of harassment for her supposed acephobia.note The author stated that she didn't know enough about asexuality to have an ace character and would need to do some research in order to accurately portray asexuality in the comic

The censoring of the comic in order to appeal to publishers has broken the base quite a bit.
The author put out a very loose sketch of Fan-Preferred Couple Ava and Maggie doing lewd things and there was a bit of schism in the fandom.

Once again the base was broken when the author uploaded 'Dolce Vita', a piece of art of Maggie in a suggestive pose, without clothes and covered only by various fruits. The resulting outrage resulted in the suspension of the author's Deviantart account, and quickly created a Flame War over whether this was a reasonable response or not.
