You can't. There is no explanation.

It turned out Bryke were gigantic hacks who, like George Lucas with the original Star Wars trilogy, were able to conceal their incompetence thanks to a quality creative team on ATLA who were able to successfully smooth over their fuck-ups. They had too much creative control with Korra, and the ending of Book 2 speaks volumes to that fact.

I'll give credit that the Wan episodes are at least better than everything around them, even if the explanation of Rava is an ass-pull retcon that's just as bad and unnecessary as midiclorians.

The Legend Korra is similar to the Star Wars Prequels in lots of ways. In addition to the directorial incompetence I've already mentioned, the show tries and fails to emulate structural elements of the first work (Korra's Team Avatar is just a worse Gaang) and attempts to fill in parts of the lore, but does so with stupid ideas or ones that outright contradicts what the previous story developed (the nature of the Avatar spirit), with the net result being a world that's less interesting or engaging.

Zaheer had put in a lot of physical practice as well, like the Air Acolytes who practiced airbender-inspired martial arts. At that point the only thing missing was the airbending itself.

he also wasn't really portrayed as a master right off the bat. During his fight with Tenzin, after having airbending for a while and a lot of time to practice, he still got outmatched by a real airbending master 1v1.

Well if an avatar is killed while in the avatar state then all the previous incarnations disappear as well, I think this was supposed to be like that but one at a time since Ravaa was removed from Korra

Well reconnecting the spirit and physical worlds, allowed the spirit world to finally balance out the physical plane by "resetting" airbending. As to why some people were chosen it could be reincarnation or a personality thing.
