Alfred is the voice of reason. Heck, even in Batman vs Superman he's the only person who's not crap in some way or cut short to make room for more explosions.

It's more like Alfred is the only person capable of holding Batman together. Alfred is the character who's always there to talk sense into the crazy person who's running around punching people and playing mall ninja with the mentally ill. Without Alfred, Bruce Wayne would have been levered out of everything long ago, and Batman would just be living in a garage somewhere eating stale sandwiches. Without Alfred, Batman would basically be Moon Knight.
