An anthropomorphic personification of a publishing company.

Because we are autistic and/or bored.

Japanese -tan tradition. But we do have some boy -tans too, like Diamond-kun.

If a publisher doesn't have a personality yet, then you can suggest ideas for one.
If a publisher doesn't have a design yet, then you can suggest ideas for one.
If a publisher has a personality and a design, then you can draw them.
If multiple publishers have all of the above, then you can draw comics of them interacting.
>How many publishers do we need?
All of them. This isn't a Marvel/DC project, so please don't focus on them.

Please do not respond to console war comments.

And last but not least, remember to have

I don't want to say we lost, but you're kinda right. We spent most of our time bitching at each other and now we have barely a dozen people even interested in this concept, and it was an interesting concept.

How in the hell did those channel-tan people do it? We have the same concept and there are at least three dozen people that do know their shit about comics.

I have no fucking idea, but every fucking week they get shit like this... it makes me angry, and sad.
>>
>>84857192
Because they had more interesting concepts and worked together in a more collaborative effort and spring-boarded ideas off each other like Olympic divers. And I will admit they had better artists and didn't scare them off when someone got pissy their personification idea wasn't picked up.
>>
>>84857192

We discussed this a lot in the last thread, but it was basically due to the fact that TV channel fans simply don't have the same company war mindset comic book publisher fans do.
>>
>>84857462

Which is a shame, since there are a lot of interesting ideas to work off of, like the crash of 1996 or the Comics Code Authority.
>>
>>84857492
I think it has more to do with the fact that channels are better at having their own distinct identities while most publishers are honestly kinda the same outside of tiny details. The Big Two are really similar and all of the smaller ones pretty much blur together. Meanwhile Disney, CN, and Nick can all be drawn in different artstyles and you can immediately register who's supposed to be what and what that means for their personality.
>>
>>84858760
>the Comics Code Authority.
Yeah, it could have been a cool concept. We can try and make an idea for it, don't know what it would be though, I'd honestly go with an object head with the symbol used as the head.

Make it wear a pure white suit, with a black undershirt, golden tie and black cuffs?
>>
>>84859048

>>
>>84859122
I think the fact that they have like 50 individual and interesting tans and that we're struggling to get five good ones makes my counterargument for me.
>>
>>84859108

Yeah, make him notably "different" from the other tans, like PC-tan for console-tans or Viacom-tan for channel-tans.
>>
>>84858760
>>84859108
You see that's the problem, you all want to make a comic of this, and that not fun.

>>84859122
Every channel has their own style. See >>84857462
>>
>>84859191
Yeah, that's what I went with for CCA, I didn't want it to look to similar and ape off of the Viacom/PC-tan designs.
>>
>>84859224
>you all want to make a comic of this, and that not fun.
In what way was me trying to make the CCA personification a comic idea? I'm just trying to shove something new out here to see if it would get some traction.
>>
>>84857192
I think it's mainly because tv channels are a bit easier to grasp on what they have done over the years, which leads to character and story ideas for their Tans. For comic publishers, not only are their history not as easy to grasp, but just not as recognizable or well known as TV stuff. A valiant effort from you guys I admit.

Personally I'd hate to see DC and Marvel-tan go. MAYBE they can stick around in /ctg/ since they are pretty important to their respective channels they work with.
>>
>>84859306
Alright let me explain, there is nothing from these thread with actual value. it's always the same walltext with info that honestly no one fucking cares. You need something fun, catchy. not a biography.
>>
The designs for channel-tans don't suck, also... Like, all of these publisher-tan designs are hideous and unappealing. If you want people to be interested in the idea, I'd suggest doing a total overhaul.
>>
>>84859366
Yeah, if we ever just abandoned this project, DC Marvel IDW Archie and Dark Horse could all be in Channel-tan stuff and it'd be organic. Though they'd probably need redesigns to put them more in-line with channel-tan's aesthetics.
>>
>>84859453
Only Dark Horse, the rest are "cute" and "girly".

Viacom isn't a beloved or fun company. In real life it's a fucking dumpster-fire that's somehow still functioning.

The people in the Channel-Tans made him into a caring father figure that has eldritch abilities and has an Archnemesis that's a cute cat.

> there is nothing from these thread with actual value
Then make something with value, make stories with these characters that we do have. Look at history of what's been going on in Comic histories and make some ideas out of that.

Don't throw our mess in with their world. Honestly, with all the bullshit that we do here that cause us to have such a small "Fanbase" we don't need to bring our arguments and butthurt into something that actually was successful.

DC and Marvel comics stay in the Comic-Tan threads, throwing them out is just foolish.

>Then make something with value.
Oh yeah, more stories would be nice.
>>
>>84859618
Please no. her design it's weird indeed, but somehow cute.
>>
>>84859654
The reason I specified those five is because they all do licensed comics for channels or have their comics frequently adapted into shows. It would actually make a lot of sense to have Disney and Marvel hang out with stacks of cash while DC is just exasperated with CN's bullshit.
>>
It failed from the start with DC-tan. The Channel-tans had a lot of appeal to branching out and trying to develop their own unique looks while too many people kept trying to make DC-tan better which ended up just encompassing every other tan.
>>
>>84859805
I mean, I'm pretty sure the channel-tans also started by developing their main three a bunch before branching off into the others. If anything we were too quick to start branching off before we had a solid foundation to work with.

No it would not, DC and Marvel comics should stay in the Comic threads. There is no point in doing crossover bullshit with the /ctg/ team, they won't like it and the fans of the other five comics wouldn't like it either.

Telling them to leave is just a dick move. That would be like telling the main characters in the /ctg/ to leave. If you want your character to be noticed then talk about them and get your point across with them.

>>84859805
>It failed from the start with DC-tan
No, it failed with the start of us not working together and seeing how all these comic personifications could work together as one big concept. We went with the whole everything isn't connected and we didn't mesh anything together.

We didn't even do anything with their being the San Diego Comic-Con.

Funny story, every time that gets suggested some other anons claim that talking about the big two is the entire reason this thread is dead. They say the war between the big two scared everyone away and that the only way this thread can be salvaged is to ignore them as much as possible and focus on their obscure side publishers. So we can't even come to a consensus as to how we can develop this thread into something more than bullshit.

Just in general to the comments about the popularity of Channels, they also kind of keep it alive through the week. and don't have just one day on the weekend. Granted their threads are more popular and possibly warrant more than one thread once a week but still just in a broader since a great deal of enthusiasm and exposure is thrown at them throughout the entire week. I think someone mentioned last thread that they request stuff in drawthreads and just tend to pop up in other threads.

I don't know where the Channel thing came from I wasn't there for the start of it and I don't think I was there for the start of Publishers either. When I did the Image design was the first time I ever noticed any "tan" general. But I see Channel just spread out more. And you know with a larger net you have a better chance to catch more fish. So maybe making an effort outside of these threads to get more people interested would be a good strategy.

Also trying to do my part. Not attempting a redesign or anything, just two sisters going shopping.
>>
>>84863858
>I don't know where the Channel thing came from
One guy drew the three main tans on his own and /co/ loved it enough to turn it into a general. Meanwhile the Publishers were made entirely to cash in on the tan craze that the Channels started.

The channels started from a request in a drawthread last month
http://desuarchive.org/co/thread/83458396/#83465856

Which led to one artist doing the core group at once, then two, possibly three others riffing on those designs to make the "related" channels.
http://desuarchive.org/co/thread/83458396/#83474794

If I recognise the art style correctly, most of the early threads were carried by those few drawfags basically drawing their OCs doing lewd things. There was some discussion, but fundamentally it started with drawfags doing what they wanted (which is apparently an astonishing amount of softcore porn)

The Publishers about ten days later, but crucially with the question of "What would publisher-tans look like?". The DC and Marvel designs came up pretty quickly, but the brainstorming meant that developed, ready made character designs that looked good didn't exist from the get go and arguments were almost baked in from the beginning. The Channels don't bother with what so-and-sos job is or even particularly developed personalities particularly, because its a vehicle for cute pictures, but the Publishers have been more based around writing from the start.

https://desuarchive.org/co/thread/83700165/

We don't have many pictures, basically. I'm convinced that's like 90% of our problem (although Tuesdays VS the entire weekend + drawthreads doesn't really help either).

Also please don't take that the wrong way man, I really like your stuff and I'm glad you take the time to do things, just pointing out that its basically you and occasionally the artist from the OP here most of the time (and they've already said they're only interested in DC and Marvel, which is fine but is still a bit of a bugger from anyone who likes the others).

That's a really good point, and hardly unexpected if you think about it. But that might mean drawthreads could really give Publishers a boost.

I did wonder about maybe changing the hair to be more like Abby Holland. Makes the Swamp Thing reference a little more explicit, but also extends it into other spooky goth directions.

Then again, the green does add a nice splash of colour. Our tans are a bit monochrome for some reason.
>>
I think the biggest benefit the channel-tans have is that their designs are unique. They aren't just "here's spongebob's pants and timmy's shirt and et cetera et cetera" like our tans are, all of the tans wear original outfits that are just informed by aesthetic those channels have. CN's bumpers have a lot of neon rainbows mixed with black and white so her outfit is just a bunch of those colors mixed in a pleasing way. Her outfit doesn't take anything from her shows other than her calarts-style proportions. I think that's the biggest place where we struggle, publishers don't have a unified aesthetic. You can't just draw something and go "oh that's Marvel" unless you're making a reference.

However, you can make a reference to comic STYLES, comic ERAS, and people will get that right away. Golden Age, Silver Age, Dark Age, Modern Age... even if the average fan doesn't know what those terms mean, they can recognize what those are and know that they're different from each other. It might be more interesting if we had a Golden Age DC and Marvel, a Silver Age DC and Marvel, a Dark Age DC and Marvel, and a Modern Age DC and Marvel. Give them all unique names and identities and base them more on the themes those publishers preferred in those eras, as opposed to just grabbing a bunch of costume pieces and combining them into an outfit.

I really like these threads too, and its been really amazing to see some of the things I've suggested get drawn up and adopted by people. Its still pretty frustrating recognising the art problem, wanting to contribute more and then failing miserably to translate what's in my head into anything anyone would want to see,

Pic related, this is the least embarrassing attempt I made at DC Thomson (a very old established Scottish publisher that does the Beano, Dandy and Commando, among other things) ad it barely works as a stick figure! I tried to capture some of the key features of their most popular strips (huge knobbly knees, 1950s-ish working class clothes, limited colour pallette, round button noses and sticky out teeth), but I'm constantly let down by how I'm shit at drawing!

Everyone's got to start somewhere, I know. Its just frustrating, and I haven't anywhere near enough spare time to get much better.

I feel like his design is missing something. Not a lot, it's pretty great, but I feel like he's slightly underdetailed. I feel like you could add a bit more to his head or neck area to flash up his design a bit. Even if it was like... I dunno, some of the aura floating off his hand? I assume his aura is supposed to be whiteout or something so he can censor things.
