The concept of The Killing Joke is "how does the relationship between Batman and the Joker end?"

Anything that doesn't directly tie into that isn't important. Gordon's state of mind is relevant only because he was present for the final conflict, and he was only there because he was being used by the Joker to prove a point to Batman.

The problem with the prequel is that it makes Batman look impulsive and cheapens the resolution of his arc. It seems silly that Bruce is weak enough to give in to Barbra then is suddenly stable enough to rationally appeal to and spare the Joker at the end. Also she'd already received a fair amount of training from Bruce by the time she's Batgirl, as the Robin solo book shows that a significan't amount of time passes between her asking Bruce to be Robin and going out on patrol with him. Arguably she had more training that we were ever privy to Babs having during her tenure as Batgirl in the 60's, 70's and 80's.
